  • This paper describes a design model for the conceptual design of ships. Existing design models have problems such that their operating mode of batch versions cannot reflect the design procedures in reality. Reliability of the results is low because the performance estimations are based mainly on empirical formulas. To improve the problems of existing design models, a new design model has been developed. The new model consists of an interactive user interface, a database of main engines, a database of particulars of existing ships, and ten modules for performance estimations. To develop such a user-oriented system, the concept of graphical user interface (GUI) is adopted.

  • Life cycle assessment(LCA) has been developed from the concept of life cycle thinking. Life cycle thinking implies that everyone in the whole chain of a product's life cycle, from cradle to grave, has a responsibility and a role to play, taking into account all the relevant external effects. LCA is an analytical tool for identifying environmental loads and assessing the environmental impact in the whole chain of a product's life cycle. In Europe and Japan, LCA and ecodesign study for railway industry have been actively carried out recently. However, LCA for railway industry in domestic is still infant. LCA is standardized in International Organization of Standardization(ISO), base on the ISO 14040 standards, 307 life cycle inventory(LCI) database for infrastructure and base materials have been established in total since 1999. Some of LCI database can use in performing LCA for trains and railway infrastructure, but still not enough to derive accurate LCA result. Therefore, railway oriented LCA methodology and LCI DB are needed to be developed.

  • According to computer-based life style and computer networking system is generalized, the construction of information system based on the construction of database is one of the major jobs in the design field. The construction of standard database system is one of the major factors to build the information infra and develop design field as knowledge-base industry. However, the construction of user-based dassification of database is prior to that of standard design database system. This study presents the possibility of the construction of user-friendly and standard database system by studying the dassification system of database.

  • Author outlines briefly developments of policies relating to telecommunication infrastructure and databases since latter half of 1970′s. There exist three phases. The first phase was from later 1970′s to 1985, which was an initial stage of electronic information service in Japan. In the second phase, 1985~1990, basic policy change made possible the privatization of telecommunication services and proliferation of database products and vendors, The third phase began in early 1990′s with downsizing in computer usage, wide-spreading information networks and rapid dissemination of personal computers. Then author describes offers on policy formation for "novel information infrastructure" and current situation concerning the "Internet" in Japan. Finally, tasks and problems for implementing new generation program for information infrastructure and database usage are pointed out, These are knowledge resource, cost, copyrights and cultural problems including language.

  • A nuclear Power Plant is composed of a number of mechanical components. Maintaining the integrity of these components is one of the most critical issues in nuclear industry. In order to evaluate the integrity of these mechanical components, a lot of data are required including inspection data, geometrical data, material properties, etc. Therefore, an effective database system is essential to manage the integrity of nuclear power plant. For this purpose, an internet based virtual reality environment and web database system was proposed. The developed virtual reality environment provides realistic geometrical configurations of mechanical components using VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). The virtual reality environment was linked with the web database, which can manage the required data for the integrity evaluation. The proposed system is able to share the information regarding the integrity evaluation through internet, and thus, will be suitable for an integrated system for the maintenance of mechanical components.

  • Drug delivery systems (DDS) have entered mainstream in the pharmaceutical industry in the recent years. Major pharmaceutical companies as well as small or medium-sized biotechnology companies are developing various DDS-based products. We have established Drug Delivery System Company Database, which is an online searchable database of companies that develop DDS-based products and technologies or supply formulations and/or materials. Company summary, products and key technologies are listed in the database. DDS technology fields also include administration routes and indications of drugs. DDS terminologies, Statistical analysis, Useful Links, Glossary and Comments pages are also provided.

  • Recently, it becomes a big trend in the banking industry to apply a big data analytics technique to extract essential knowledge from their customer database. Such a trend is based on the capability to analyze the big data with powerful analytics software and recognize the value of big data analysis results. However, there exits still a need for more systematic theory and mechanism about how to adopt a big data analytics approach in the banking industry. Especially, there is no study proposing a practical case study in which big data analytics is successfully accomplished from the marketing perspective. Therefore, this study aims to analyze a target marketing case in the banking industry from the view of big data analytics. Target database is a big data in which about 3.5 million customers and their transaction records have been stored for 3 years. Practical implications are derived from the marketing perspective. We address detailed processes and related field test results. It proved critical for the big data analysts to consider a sense of Veracity and Value, in addition to traditional Big Data's 3V (Volume, Velocity, and Variety), so that more significant business meanings may be extracted from the big data results.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the status of maternity protection in the industries for the development of educational database used by occupational health nurses (OHNs). Method: 100 OHNs were purposively sampled and they were charged in the occupational health manager of their own industries. Data were collected by the postal mail, the response rate was 53.0%, and analysis rate was 43.0%. Result: The results were as follows; 1. Most of subjects responded there was the institutionalization of a special holiday for woman workers (97.7%) and 90 days maternity leave (95.4%). Otherwise, the numbers of industry were smaller in the case of providing the breast-feeding time, temporary rest from office for child raring, restriction of hazard job, night job, and over time. The application rates were lower than the rate of institutionalization of all maternity protection items. 2. There were significant differences in institutionalization of maternity protection by the activity of the trade union. And the numbers of the industry applying the maternity protection were significantly different by the area and the types of industry. 3. Most OHNs responded 17 subjects were needed to the maternity protection education for women workers. Conclusion: It would be needed to develop the maternity protection education database in base of the status of maternity protection in the industries and the need of maternity protection education. The role of OHNs for maternity protection was expected to activate.

  • The telecommunication industry, which has traditionally formed its own market area, has also been affected by the after shock of the digitalization triggered by computer communications. In the telecommunications industry, digitalization or digital services refers to network functional virtualization supported by software defined networks. The digitalization of the telecom industry is changing rapidly, and the participants are not limited to the traditional equipment suppliers and service providers in established market, but includes virtually all social entities. To understand this new change, focusing on whether the traditional equipment suppliers that have traditionally played a pivotal role in the center of change will continue its role in this new era of digitalization or not, and how they are progressing toward end-to-end digital services, the goal of digitalization, will lead us to the good understanding of ongoing digitalization.

  • Animal testing was used traditionally in the cosmetics industry to confirm product safety, but has begun to be banned; alternative methods to replace animal experiments are either in development, or are being validated, worldwide. Research data related to test substances are critical for developing novel alternative tests. Moreover, safety information on cosmetic materials has neither been collected in a database nor shared among researchers. Therefore, it is imperative to build and share a database of safety information on toxicological mechanisms and pathways collected through in vivo, in vitro, and in silico methods. We developed the CAMSEC database (named after the research team; the Consortium of Alternative Methods for Safety Evaluation of Cosmetics) to fulfill this purpose. On the same website, our aim is to provide updates on current alternative research methods in Korea. The database will not be used directly to conduct safety evaluations, but researchers or regulatory individuals can use it to facilitate their work in formulating safety evaluations for cosmetic materials. We hope this database will help establish new alternative research methods to conduct efficient safety evaluations of cosmetic materials.
