  • Overlapping windows are generally used for queries to process continuous data streams. Nevertheless, existing approaches discussed join algorithms only for basic types of windows such as tumbling windows and tuple-driven windows. In this paper, we propose an efficient join algorithm for overlapping windows, which are considered as a more general type of windows. The proposed algorithm is based on an incremental window join. It focuses on producing join results continuously when the memory overflow frequently occurs. It consists of (1) a method to use both of the incremental and full joins selectively, (2) a victim selection algorithm to minimize latency of join processing and (3) an idle time professing algorithm. We show through our experiments that the selective use of incremental and full joins provides better performance than using one of them only.

  • Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have a longer lifespan, higher energy density, and lower self-discharge rates than other batteries, therefore, they are preferred as an Energy Storage System (ESS). However, during years 2017-2019, 28 ESS fire accidents occurred in Korea, and accurate capacity estimation of LIB is essential to ensure safety and reliability during operations. In this study, data-driven modeling that predicts capacity changes according to the charging cycle of LIB was conducted, and developed models were compared their performance for the selection of the optimal machine learning model, which includes the Decision Tree, Ensemble Learning Method, Support Vector Regression, and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). For model training, lithium battery test data provided by NASA was used, and GPR showed the best prediction performance. Based on this study, we will develop an enhanced LIB capacity prediction and remaining useful life estimation model through additional data training, and improve the performance of anomaly detection and monitoring during operations, enabling safe and stable ESS operations.

  • The study presents a new hybrid data-driven method by combining radial basis functions neural networks (RBF-NN) with the Jaya algorithm (JA) to provide effective structural health monitoring of arch dams. The novelty of this approach lies in that only one user-defined parameter is required and thus can increase its effectiveness and efficiency, as compared to other machine learning techniques that often require processing a large amount of training and testing model parameters and hyper-parameters, with high time-consuming. This approach seeks rapid damage detection in arch dams under dynamic conditions, to prevent potential disasters, by utilizing the RBF-NNN to seamlessly integrate the dynamic elastic modulus (DEM) and modal parameters (such as natural frequency and mode shape) as damage indicators. To determine the dynamic characteristics of the arch dam, the JA sequentially optimizes an objective function rooted in vibration-based data sets. Two case studies of hyperbolic concrete arch dams were carefully designed using finite element simulation to demonstrate the effectiveness of the RBF-NN model, in conjunction with the Jaya algorithm. The testing results demonstrated that the proposed methods could exhibit significant computational time-savings, while effectively detecting damage in arch dam structures with complex nonlinearities. Furthermore, despite training data contaminated with a high level of noise, the RBF-NN and JA fusion remained the robustness, with high accuracy.

  • Simulation study were performed for ventilation capability effect on the smoke spread in the deeply-underground subway station(DUSS). Singeumho station(The line # 5, Depth: 46m) was modeled and were analyzed for smoke-spread speed difference between the originally-designed-ventilation-capacity and the measured-ventilation-capacity. Field test data for actual fan in DUSS was applied as a boundary condition of a simulation. The whole station was covered in this analysis and total of 4 million grids were generated for this simulation. The fire-driven flow was analyzed case by case to compare the smoke-spread effects. In order to enhance the efficiency of calculation, parallel processing by MPI was employed and large eddy simulation method in FDS code was adopted.

  • This paper deals with the experimental results of the frequency-dependent resultant ground impedance of vertical ground electrodes installed with a regular n-polygon. In order to propose an effective method of installing the vertically-driven multiple ground electrodes used to obtain the low ground impedance, the resultant ground impedance of ground electrodes installed with a regular n-polygon were measured as functions of the number of ground electrodes and the frequency of test currents and the results were discussed based on the potential interferences among ground electrodes. As a consequence, the effect of potential interference on the resultant ground impedance of vertical ground electrodes is frequency-dependent and it is significant in the low frequency of a few hundreds [Hz]. The resultant ground impedance of multiple vertical ground electrodes is not decreased in linearly proportion to the number of ground electrodes due to the overlapped potential interferences. Also the distributed-parameter circuit model considering the potential interference, the frequency-dependent relative permittivity and resistivity of soil was proposed. The simulated results of the frequency-dependent resultant ground impedance of multiple vertical ground electrodes are in good agreement with the measured data.

  • This study aims to investigate the factors which impact the possibility of Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) implementation in automobile companies in Vietnam. A survey was carried out with automobile enterprises' managers, getting 198 usable respondents, with data and theoretical model analyzed by using SPSS with EFA method. Results indicated that in Vietnamese automobile enterprises, the possibility of EMA implementation was driven by elements including motivation to reduce production costs, reactions to environmental issues, compliance to legislation, procedures and processes in the working environment which they are in business. The government and professional institutions should play a vital role in promoting EMA practices by issuing specific guidelines and continuous training. Besides, tax authorities should apply the favor policies such as tax incentives to stimulate interest enterprises to implement EMA. However, this study's results only reflect about 63.7% of the impact to the implementation of EMA in Vietnamese automotive enterprises, so there are still some other factors that should be found out in the future researches. This is the first attempt to systematically analyze enterprises' perception and willingness to apply EMA in Vietnamese automobile industry. This study contributes to not only the existing empirical literature of EMA but also enterprises' managers in Vietnam and other transitional economies.

  • Considering teaching methods for computer education is a must for effectively instructing students of knowledge and skills on computers. In this paper, we adopts STAD Cooperative Learning method, among many others, in order to reduce any burden teachers and learners may have. As a result, it finds out that practical training based on STAD Cooperative Learning is very effective in enhancing students' abilities for ICT data collection and manipulation. The teaching model driven out as a result of this study, will be a good example for teaching models in many computer-related departments. In the future, more studies on teaching models will have to take place for more effective teaching of computer courses.

  • This paper discusses the stick-slip phenomenon of the driveline system of a vehicle in consideration of friction. Friction is operated on the between of flywheel and clutch disk. The expressions for obtaining the results have been derived from the equation of motion of a three degree of freedom frictional torsion vibration system which is made up driving part(engine, flywheel), driven part(clutch, transmission) and dynamic load part(vehicle body) by applying forth-order Rungekutta method. It was found that the great affect parameters of the stick-slip or stick motion were surface pressure force between flywheel and clutch disk, time decay parameter of surface pressure force and 1st torsional spring constant of clutch disk when driveline system had been affected by friction force. The results of this study can be used as basic design data of the clutch system for the ride quality improvement of a car.

  • In sports video games, especially ball games, motion capture techniques are used to reproduce the ball-driven performances. The amount of motion data needed to create different situations in which athletes exchange balls is bound to increase exponentially with resolution. This paper proposes how avatars in virtual worlds can not only imitate professional athletes in ball games, but also create and edit their actions effectively. First, various ball-handling movements are recorded using motion sensors. We do not really have to control an actual ball; imitating the motions is enough. Next, motion is created by specifying what to pass the ball through, and then making motion to handle the ball in front of the motion sensor. The ball's occupant then passes the ball to the user-specified target through a motion that imitates the user's, and the process is repeated. The method proposed can be used as a convenient user interface for motion based games for players who handle balls.
