A new full scale testing apparatus generically named the Wall of Wind (WoW) has been built by the researchers at the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) at Florida International University (FIU). WoW is capable of testing single story building models subjected up to category 3 hurricane wind speeds. Depending on the relative model and WoW wind field sizes, testing may entail blockage issues. In addition, the proximity of the test building to the wind simulator may also affect the aerodynamic data. This study focuses on the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) assessment of the effects on the quality of the aerodynamic data of (i) blockage due to model buildings of various sizes and (ii) wind simulator proximity for various distances between the wind simulator and the test building. The test buildings were assumed to have simple parallelepiped shapes. The computer simulations were performed under both finite WoW wind-field conditions and in an extended Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) wind flow. Mean pressure coefficients for the roof and the windward and leeward walls served as measures of the blockage and wind simulator proximity effects. The study uses the commercial software FLUENT with Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations and a Renormalization Group (RNG) k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The results indicated that for larger size test specimens (i.e. for cases where the height of test specimen is larger than one third of the wind field height) blockage correction may become necessary. The test specimen should also be placed at a distance greater than twice the height of the test specimen from the fans to reduce proximity effect.

In electronic warfare settings, battlefield helicopters identify various threats based upon threat data, which are acquired using their multi-sensors of aircraft survivability equipment (ASE). To continually function despite of potential threats and successfully execute their missions, the battlefield helicopters have to repeatedly report threats in simulated battlefield situations. Toward this ends, the paper presents threat unification using multi-sensor simulator and its implementation. The simulator consists of (1) threat attributes generator, which models threats against battlefield helicopters and defines their specific attributes, (2) threat data generator, which generates threats, being similar to real ones, using normal, uniform, and exponential distributions, and (3) graphic display for threat analysis and unification, which shows unified threat information, for example, threat angle and its level. We implement a multi-sensor threat simulator that can be repeatedly operable in various simulated battlefield settings. Further, we report experimental results that, in addition to tangibly modeling the threats to battlefield helicopters, test the capabilities of threat unification using our simulator.

In this study, joint angles of the lower extremity and inertial sensor data such as accelerations and angular velocities were measured during a ski simulator exercise in order to evaluate the skill of skiers. Twenty experts and twenty unskilled skiers were recruited for the study. All expert skiers held the certificates issued by the Korea Ski Instructors Association. A three-dimensional motion capture system and two inertial sensors were used to acquire joint movements, heel acceleration and heel angular velocity during ski simulator exercises. Pattern variation values were calculated to assess the variations in ski simulator motion of expert and unskilled skiers. Integral ratio of roll angular velocity was calculated to determine the parallel alignment of the two feet. Results showed that ski experts showed greater range of motion of joint angle, peak-to-peak amplitude(PPA) of heel acceleration and PPA of heel angular velocity than unskilled skiers. Ski experts showed smaller pattern variations than unskilled skiers. In addition, the integral ratio of roll angular velocity in ski experts was closer to 1. Inertial sensor data measurements during the ski simulator exercises could be useful to evaluate the skill of the skier.

Objective: The aim of this study is to provide a current knowledge of the multiple issues regarding motion effects on crew performance. Background: The motions of the ship may create motion sickness, nausea and vomit. Also, these motions also disturb the balance of crew members, increase the energy expenditure of crew for shipboard work, and result in increased levels of injury and fatigue. However, the motion effects of the ship on crew performance has not been thoroughly investigated. Method: Participants(N=10) were engaged in an experiment in 2 experimental environments(training ship and ship handling simulator) and 2 navigational conditions(day and night). The COP(Center of Pressure) data were recorded as an objective measure of postural balance control and the SSQ(Simulator Sickness Questionnaire) was used as a subjective measure of sickness. Results: The results showed that COP has a no significant difference based on experimental environments, but significant effect on SSQ. Conclusion: During the virtual simulator navigation, subjects showed significant SSQ level changes, which included decreased SSQ data. But, there is no significant difference of COP between training ship and ship handling simulator. Application: The results of this study could be applied to the next generation of ship design to decrease effect of motion at sea and to increase performance of ship crew.
To meet the increasing demand from various fishing fields for training of fishing equipment operators, a fishing winch simulator was designed to train maritime students in the correct and safe operation of hydraulic winches under various load conditions related to fishing operations. The aim of this study is to describe the basic dynamic characteristics of the newly developed hydraulic fishing winch simulator and particularly to analyze the mechanical responses produced on the winch operation controls. The winch simulator consists of two winch units, a computer control and data acquisition system, a control consol and other associated mechanisms. When one winch is in hauling mode, the other one will always be in loading mode. The revolution speed of the hauling winch was controlled by a proportional directional control valve, and the braking torque of the loading winch was controlled by a proportional pressure control valve. The simulation experiments indicated that the dynamic characteristics of the hauling winch followed the braking response characteristics of the loading winch. The tests also showed that the warp speed and tension linearly depend on the pressure differential across the motor of the loading winch controlled by operating the proportional pressure control valve during the hauling operation. The experience gained from various training courses showed that the fishing winch simulator was very realistic and it was valuable for training novice winch operators. The results of the winch simulation exercise were recorded and used to evaluate the training on the operation and handling of the winch system. From these test results, we concluded that the tension acting on the warp during hauling operations can successfully be simulated by controlling the pressure differential across the motor with step changes of the control input signal to the proportional pressure control valve of the loading winch.
The autonomous vehicle is based on an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) consisting of a sensor that collects information about the surrounding environment and a control module that determines the measured data. As interest in autonomous navigation technology grows recently, an easy development framework for ADAS beginners and learners is needed. However, existing development and verification methods are based on high performance vehicle simulator, which has drawbacks such as complexity of verification method and high cost. Also, most of the schemes do not provide the sensing data required by the ADAS directly from the simulator, which limits verification reliability. In this paper, we present an interactive ADAS development and verification framework using a 3D vehicle simulator that overcomes the problems of existing methods. ADAS with image recognition based artificial intelligence was implemented as a virtual sensor in a 3D car simulator, and autonomous driving verification was performed in real scenarios.
In a training simulator for power plant, operator's action in the MCR(Main Control Room) are given to plant process and computer system model as an inputs, and the same response as in real power plant is provided in real time. Inter-process communication and synchronization are especially important among various inputs. In the plant simulator, to simulate the digital control system such as FOXBORO SPEC-200 Micro control system, modification and adaptation of control card(CCC) and its continuous display station(CDS) is necessary. This paper describes the modeling and simulation of FOXBORO SPEC-200 Micro control system applied to Younggwang nuclear power plant unit #3 & 4, and its integration process to the full-scope replica type training simulator. In a simulator, display station like CDS of FOXBORO SPEC-200 Micro control system is classified as ITI(Intelligent Type Instrument), which has a micro processor inside to process information and the corresponding alphanumeric display, and the stimulation of ITI limits the important functions in a training simulator such as backtrack, replay, freeze and IC reset. Therefore, to achieve the better performance of the simulator, modification of CDS and special firmware is developed to simulate the FOXBORO SPEC-200 Micro control system. Each control function inside control card is modeled and simulated in generic approach to accept the plant data and control parameter conveniently, and debugging algorithms are applied for massive coding developed in short period.

PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to design an intraoral environment simulator and to assess the accuracy of two intraoral scanners using the simulator. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A box-shaped intraoral environment simulator was designed to simulate two specific intraoral environments. The cast was scanned 10 times by Identica Blue (MEDIT, Seoul, South Korea), TRIOS (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark), and CS3500 (Carestream Dental, Georgia, USA) scanners in the two simulated groups. The distances between the left and right canines (D3), first molars (D6), second molars (D7), and the left canine and left second molar (D37) were measured. The distance data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS. The differences in intraoral environments were not statistically significant (P>.05). Between intraoral scanners, statistically significant differences (P<.05) were revealed by the Kruskal-Wallis test with regard to D3 and D6. CONCLUSION. No difference due to the intraoral environment was revealed. The simulator will contribute to the higher accuracy of intraoral scanners in the future.
In recent years, the quality requirements from the customers of hot rolled steel strip have been steadily increasing in diversity and strictness. To meet these quality requirements as well as to improve productivity, steel mills have been doing their efforts for developing high performance Automatic Gauge Control (AGC) system. However, it is very time consuming and also needs a lot of money to develop the new technologies of AGC in actual mill. So, there has been a demand for developing the Dynamic Hot Rolling Simulator since late 80's. It is a kind of software packages and can analyze the dynamic behaviors of hot finishing rolling process without laborious experiments in actual mill. It can also be used as a designing tool of Automatic Gauge Controller. In this work, the Dynamic Hot Rolling Simulator which is applicable to 6 sands hot strip mill rolling was developed. The MATLAB with SIMLINK was used as a software developer for making the main part of simulator because it is very powerful tool for modeling, integrating, controller design, and simulation. In this paper, the structures and the mathematical models of the simulator were briefly described and the results of simulation on the transient phenomena of hot rolling process with actual mill data were also presented.
