  • A product is designed through the collaboration among engineers in several fields such as design, analysis, and manufacturing. These series of functions are performed repeatedly during the design process. An easy access and exchange of the model data is one of the important elements that help to shorten production development time. Especially, the importance of data exchange between CAD and CAE applications is increasing in the field of verification and estimation of the products. However, information and knowledge of model which is generated by a CAD software cannot be transferred by a function of CAE software, as an exchange of product data between CAD and CAE applications. It causes a delay in design analysis and eventually discourages a designer's effort in improving his design. Therefore, we need to integrate a commercial CAD and CAE applications effectively and to use the same interface on a product model obtained in a distributed environment. This paper shows how to implement a model exchange between CAD and CAE by a web-service and how to provide a communication environment among engineers.

  • EDI(Electronic Data Interchange) allows the exchange of business information and computer-processable data in a standard, structured format electronically between organizational entities. EDI handles the restructuring of a business document into the standard format so that it can be transmitted from one computer to another. This paper identifies features and technologies of web browsed electronic document exchange system as follows 1) the fundamental technologies that consists of the EDI technologies, the Internet/Web technologies, the security/authentication techniques, and the XML implementation technologies. 2) the functions that consists of the document standards, transfer technology of the document, encryption and authentication 3) the implemented Web-EDI systems that consists of document generation module, encryption and authentication module, transfer module, acknowledgement module, administration module. In this paper, the Web-based EDI system implemented from the researched technologies will be installed on the EDI servers owned by corporate customers and enable the exchange of documents between each installed companies.

  • Currently, it is possible to buy almost anything from books(Amazon.com) to airplane tickets(Travelocity.com) using the world wide web. The purpose of this research is to develop a "clean interface" between design and fabrication facilities for the production of custom machined parts through Internet. The current mechanism for production of prototype parts that can be fabricated using standard machine tools like milling machines, requires a process of part description preparation, bidding, contract award, and finally fabrication and delivery of the part. This is a substantially more complex process than buying a book or airplane ticket. In this paper, we try to define the ambiguous part description using XML based data exchange format and to enable e-commerce in this field. The research accomplishments are summarized: 1. Creation of a new format for data exchange of machined prototype parts, 2. Development of a prototype system to illustrate how the XML data can be effectively used to conduct e-Commerce for custom machined parts, 3. Testing of the methodology with a number of parts.

  • For effective battlefield situation awareness and command resolution, information exchange without seams between systems is essential. However, since each system was developed independently for its own purposes, it is necessary to ensure interoperability between systems in order to effectively exchange information. In the case of our military, semantic interoperability is guaranteed by utilizing the common message format for data exchange. However, simply standardizing the data exchange format cannot sufficiently guarantee interoperability between systems. Currently, the U.S. and NATO are developing and utilizing information exchange models to achieve semantic interoperability further than guaranteeing a data exchange format. The information exchange models are the common vocabulary or reference model, which are used to ensure the exchange of information between systems at the content-meaning level. The information exchange models developed and utilized in the United States initially focused on exchanging information directly related to the battlefield situation, but it has developed into the universal form that can be used by whole government departments and related organizations. On the other hand, NATO focused on strictly expressing the concepts necessary to carry out joint military operations among the countries, and the scope of the models was also limited to the concepts related to command and control. In this paper, the background, purpose, and characteristics of the information exchange models developed and used in the United States and NATO were identified, and comparative analysis was performed. Through this, we intend to present implications when developing a Korean information exchange model in the future.

  • The exchange of model design data among heterogeneous CAD systems is very difficult because each CAD system has different data structures suitable for its own functions. STEP represents product information in a common computer-interpretable form that is required to remain complete and consistent when the product information is needed to be exchanged among different computer systems. However, STEP has complex architecture to represent point, line, curve and vectors of element. Moreover it can't represent geometry data of feature based models. In this study, a structure of XML document that represents geometry data of feature based models as neutral format has been developed. To use the developed XML document, a converter also has been developed to exchange modules so that it can exchange feature based data models among heterogeneous CAD systems. Developed XML document and Converter have been applied to commercial CAD systems.

  • One of the biggest problems of rapid prototyping(RP) technologies lies in their standard file format for CAD data exchange. Current methods using the de facto industry standard 'STL'have at times resulted in problems such as accuracy, redundancy, and integrity. In this paper we propose a STEP based data exchange framework for rapid prototyping systems. In this paradigm of data exchange, STEP models can be imported and converted into faceted B-rep. solid models for visualization and 2-D layer data for RP. Also an STL model, on the other hand, can be converted into a faceted B-rep. STEP model and exported as a new data exchange model with RP information.

  • In injection molding industries, CAE analyses are generally used to find out problems predicted during the process of manufacturing. The results of CAE analyses consist of much in formation such as meshes and stress, so that the size of data is pretty large. To reduce the size of the data and to make it easy to share, the CAE result to JT translator is proposed in this paper. The translator consists of three modules to translate CAE result to JT format; Extracting module gets ASCII data of product shape and the result values of CAE analysis. Sorting module and mapping module make an element data set and JT file with the data extracted from Extracting module respectively. To the JT files, engineers are able to append product properties and their comments, so that they can share the whole history of the analysis process. In addition, our case study shows that the size of JT format is reduced by almost 90% of its original data format.

  • Motion capture technology is widely used to make a realistic motion in these days. So, motion capture data is required to exchange between many animators in a work group. But different motion capture devices have different motion rapture data formats. Thus it is difficult that a animator reuse and exchange motion capture data in a storage. In this paper, we proposes a standard format for integrating a different motion capture data format. In addition, we proposes a framework of a system that manage motion capture data using our standard format. Our standard format is called MCML(Motion Capture Markup Language). It is a markup language for motion capture data and based on XML(extensable Markup Language). Our system to manage motion capture data consists of a several component - MCML Converter, MCML , MCML Editor, Motion Viewer.

  • The standardization of NGIS emerges as an important subject because of the needs for sharing information and assuring of information inter-operability. The standardization could be developed by refering OSE/RM, which is promoted internationally, that the corresponding national standards are required. The standardization of NGIS, that has been promoting, consists of standardization of national electronic base-map and common data exchange format. The process for standardization of base-map has been taken in the area of feature-attribute code and data modeling. In the area of common data exchange format, we have been accepted the accommodation of international standards as the national standard.
