A single-beam gamma densitometer is utilized to measure the average void fraction in a small diameter stainless steel pipe under critical flow conditions. A typical design of a single-beam gamma densitometer is composed of a sealed gammaray source, a collimator, a scintillation detector, and a data acquisition system that includes an amplifier and a single channel analyzer. It is operated in the count mode and can be calibrated with a test pipe and various types of phantoms made of polyethylene. A good average void fraction is obtained for a small diameter pipe with various flow regimes of the core, annular, stratified, and bubbly flows. Several factors influencing the performance of the gamma densitometer are examined, including the distance between the source and the detector, the measuring time, and the ambient temperature. The void fraction is measured during an adiabatic downward two-phase critical flow in a vertical pipe. The test pipe has an inner diameter of 10.9 mm and a thickness of 3.2 mm. The average void fraction was reasonably measured for a two-phase critical flow in the presence of nitrogen gas.
Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the uniform flow (UF) and sinusoidal streamwise flow (SSF) over an oscillating 5:1 rectangular cylinder with harmonic heaving motion at initial angles of attack of α = 0° and 3° using two-dimensional, unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations. First, the aerodynamic parameters of a stationary 5:1 rectangular cylinder in UF are compared with the previous experimental and numerical data to validate the capability of the computationally efficient two-dimensional URANS simulations. Then, the unsteady flow field and aerodynamic forces of the oscillating 5:1 rectangular cylinder in SSF are analysed and compared with those in UF to explore the effect of SSF on the rectangular cylinder. Results show that the alternative vortex shedding is disturbed by SSF both at α = 0° and 3°, resulting in a considerable decrease in the vortex-induced force, whereas the unsteady lift component induced by cylinder motion remains almost unchanged in the SSF comparing with that in UF. Notably, the strong buffeting forces are observed at α = 3° and the energy associated with unsteady lift is primarily because of the oscillations of SSF. In addition, the components of unsteady lift induced by the coupling effects of SSF and cylinder motion are discussed in detail.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the freezing phenomena in printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) for cryogenic liquid hydrogen vaporizer. Local freezing phenomena in hot channels should be avoided in designing PCHE for cryogenic liquid hydrogen vaporizer. Hence, the flow and thermal characteristics of PCHE is experimentally investigated to figure out the conditions under when freezing occurs. To conduct lab-scale PCHE experiment, liquid nitrogen is used as a working fluid in cold channels instead of using liquid hydrogen. Glycol water is used as a working fluid in hot channels. Based on the experimental data, ratio between mass flow rates of cold channels and that of hot channels is proposed as contour map to avoid the freezing phenomena in PCHE.
Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) can be a cost-effective and renewable geothermal energy source, depending on site-specific and thermohydraulic conditions. To design an effective ATES system having influenced by groundwater movement, understanding of thermo hydraulic processes is necessary. The heat transfer phenomena for an aquifer heat storage are simulated using FEFLOW with the scenario of heat pump operation with pumping and waste water reinjection in a two layered confined aquifer model. Temperature distribution of the aquifer model is generated, and hydraulic heads and temperature variations are monitored at the both wells during 365 days. The average groundwater velocities are determined with two hydraulic gradient sets according to boundary conditions, and the effect of groundwater flow are shown at the generated thermal distributions of three different depth slices. The generated temperature contour lines at the hydraulic gradient of 0.00 1 are shaped circular, and the center is moved less than 5m to the groundwater flow direction in 365 days simulation period. However at the hydraulic gradient of 0.01, the contour center of the temperature are moved to the end of boundary at each slice and the largest movement is at bottom slice. By the analysis of thermal interference data between two wells the efficiency of the heat pump system model is validated, and the variation of heads is monitored at injection, pumping and no operation mode.
In the performance test for wind turbines of medium and large, The reference met-mast should be installed for measurement reference wind speed as IEC 61400-12-1 standards and design of booms for mounted an anemometer must be considered exactly. Boom-mounted cup anemometer are influenced by flow distortion of the mast and the boom. Therefore design of booms must be important so that flow distortion due to booms should be kept below 0.5%. But, in some cases at size of met-mast structure, the distance of boom from mast is longer then measurement of wind speed is impossible because of oscillation of boom-mounted anemometer. In this paper, We measured a wind speed at several point from mast and boom and we analyzed the error of wind speed at each point of measurement. Also, we will suggest a correction method using the data curve fitting about errors of wind speed between each point of mounted anemometer.
Prediction of the time-related traits of pebble flow inside pebble-bed HTGRs is of great significance for reactor operation and design. In this work, an image-driven approach with the aid of a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed to predict the remaining time of initially loaded pebbles and the time interval of paired flow images of the pebble bed. Two types of strategies are put forward: one is adding FC layers to the classic classification CNN models and using regression training, and the other is CNN-based deep expectation (DEX) by regarding the time prediction as a deep classification task followed by softmax expected value refinements. The current dataset is obtained from the discrete element method (DEM) simulations. Results show that the CNN-aided models generally make satisfactory predictions on the remaining time with the determination coefficient larger than 0.99. Among these models, the VGG19+DEX performs the best and its CumScore (proportion of test set with prediction error within 0.5s) can reach 0.939. Besides, the remaining time of additional test sets and new cases can also be well predicted, indicating good generalization ability of the model. In the task of predicting the time interval of image pairs, the VGG19+DEX model has also generated satisfactory results. Particularly, the trained model, with promising generalization ability, has demonstrated great potential in accurately and instantaneously predicting the traits of interest, without the need for additional computational intensive DEM simulations. Nevertheless, the issues of data diversity and model optimization need to be improved to achieve the full potential of the CNN-aided prediction tool.
Lead-alloys are very attractive nuclear coolants due to their thermo-hydraulic, chemical, and neutronic properties. By utilizing the HELIOS (Heavy Eutectic liquid metal Loop for Integral test of Operability and Safety of PEACER$^2$) facility, a thermal hydraulic benchmarking study has been conducted for the prediction of pressure loss in lead-alloy cooled advanced nuclear energy systems (LACANES). The loop has several complex components that cannot be readily characterized with available pressure loss correlations. Among these components is the core, composed of a vessel, a barrel, heaters separated by complex spacers, and the plenum. Due to the complex shape of the core, its pressure loss is comparable to that of the rest of the loop. Detailed CFD simulations employing different CFD codes are used to determine the pressure loss, and it is found that the spacers contribute to nearly 90 percent of the total pressure loss. In the system codes, spacers are usually accounted for; however, due to the lack of correlations for the exact spacer geometry, the accuracy of models relies strongly on assumptions used for modeling spacers. CFD can be used to determine an appropriate correlation. However, application of CFD also requires careful choice of turbulence models and numerical meshes, which are selected based on extensive experience with liquid metal flow simulations for the KALLA lab. In this paper consistent results of CFX and Star-CD are obtained and compared to measured data. Measured data of the pressure loss of the core are obtained with a differential pressure transducer located between the core inlet and outlet at a flow rate of 13.57kg/s.

A datacenter is a high energy consuming facility whose cooling energy consumption rate is 10~20 times larger than general office buildings. The higher the temperature of supply air from a CRAC (computer room air-conditioner) is supplied, the more energy efficient cooling is possible because of improving the COP of a chiller and advanced range of outdoor air temperature available for the economizer cycles. However, because the temperature of cold air flowing into server computers varies depending on air mixing configurations in a computer room, the proper supply air temperature must be considered based on the investigation of air mixing and heat dissipation. By these, this study aims to understand the effects of variation of the supply air temperature on the air flow distributions, temperature distributions and rack cooling efficiencies. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) aided in conducting the investigation. As a result, the variation of the supply air temperature does not affect the air flow distributions. However, it mainly affects the temperature distribution. From the results of CFD simulations, Rack cooling indices (RCIHI and RCILO) were evaluated and showed the ideal state set at $19^{\circ}C$ of the supply air temperature.

Experimental and theoretical studies on cooling performance of two-channel thermoelectric air-cooling system in parallel flow are conducted. The effects of operating temperature to physical properties of thermoelectric module (TEM) are experimentally examined and used in the analysis of an air-cooling system considering thermal network and energy balance. The theoretical predicted temperature variation and cooling capacity are in good agreement with measured data, thereby validating analytic model. The heat absorbed rate increases with increasing the voltage input and decreasing thermal resistance of the system. The power consumption of TEM is linearly proportional to mean temperature differences due to variations of the physical properties on operation temperature of TEM. Furthermore thermal resistance of hot side has greater effects on cooling performance than that of cold side.

On the basis of the data collected from various fields , the energy input output state in the crop-growing sub-system in Guangdong is estimated and analyzed. Results show that the input of the artificial supplementary energy is approximately 201x105 Kcal/ha. year and the input and output ratio equals 1 : 4.73. Measures for improving productivity and speeding up the development of agricultural mechanization in Guangdong are eventually suggested.
