  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the cooling energy saving effects of CRAH supply air temperature(SAT) and design flow rate changes when applying air-side economizer in the data center. MLC(Mechanical Load Component), which is cooling performance indicator of data center, was used to assess the effectiveness of cooling energy savings. It was computed with energy simulation (DesignBuilder) to evaluate the cooling energy performance of 8 different alternatives in a data center. The MLC was 0.31~0.32 regardless of CRAH supply temperature without air-side economizer, and 0.15 to 0.19 value with air-side economizer. That is, cooling energy can be reduced by approximately 40~55% when applying economizer. As the CRAH SAT and design flow rate changed, the MLC values were 0.16 to 0.18 and 0.15 to 0.19, respectively.

  • The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model is a method of studying the flow phenomenon of fluid using a computer and finding partial differential equations that dominate processes such as heat dispersion through numerical analysis. Through CFD, a lot of information about flow disorders such as speed, pressure, density, and concentration can be obtained, and it is used in various fields from energy and aircraft design to weather prediction and environmental modeling. The simulation used for fluid analysis in this study utilized Gexcon's (FLACS) CODE, such as Norway, through overseas journals, for the accuracy of the analysis results through many experiments. It was analyzed that a technology for treating two or more catalysts with physical properties under low-temperature atmospheric pressure conditions could not be found in the prior art. Therefore, it would be desirable to establish a continuous plan by reinforcing data that can prove the effectiveness of producing efficient synthetic oil (renewable oil) through the application that pyrolysis under low-temperature and atmospheric pressure conditions.

  • This study presents an experimental work in a petrochemical company for scanning a buried pipeline using $Tc^{99m}$ radiotracer based on the measured velocity changes, in order to determine the flow reduction along a pipeline. In this work, $Tc^{99m}$ radiotracer was injected into the pipeline and monitored by sodium iodide scintillation detectors located at several positions along the pipeline. The flow velocity has been calculated between every two consecutive detectors along the pipeline. Practically, six experiments have been carried out using two different data acquisition systems, each of them being connected to four detectors. During the fifth experiment, a bypass was discovered between the scanned pipeline and another buried parallel pipeline connected after the injection point. The results indicate that the bypass had a bad effect on the volumetric flow rate in the scanned pipeline.

  • The free-piston Stirling engine (FPSE) has been widely used in aerospace owing to its advantages of high efficiency, high reliability, and self-starting ability. In this paper, a 20-kW FPSE is proposed by analyzing the requirements of space nuclear power reactor. A code was developed based on an improved simple analysis method to evaluate the performance of the proposed FPSE. The code is benchmarked with experimental data, and the maximum relative error of the output power is 17.1%. Numerical results show that the output power is 21 kW, which satisfies the design requirements. The results show that: a) reducing the pressure shell's thickness can improve the output power significantly; b) the system efficiency increases with the wire porosity, while the growth of system efficiency decreases when the porosity is higher than 80%, and system efficiency exhibits a linear relationship with the temperatures of the cold and hot sides; c) the system efficiency increases with the compression ratio; the compression ratio increases by 16.7% while the system efficiency increases by 42%. This study can provide valuable theoretical support for the design and analysis of FPSEs for space nuclear power reactors.

  • Reactor fuel's power distribution plays a vital role in designing the new generation thermionic Space Reactor Power Systems (SRPS). In this paper, the 1/12th SPACE-R's full reactor core was numerically analyzed with two kinds of different axial power distribution, to identify their impacts on thermal-hydraulic and thermoelectric characteristics. In the benchmark study, the maximum error between numerical results and existing data or design values ranged from 0.2 to 2.2%. Four main conclusions were obtained in the numerical analysis: a) The axial power distribution has less impact on coolant temperature. b) Axial power distribution influenced the emitter temperature distribution a lot, when the core power was cosine distributed, the maximum temperature of the emitter was 194 K higher than that of the uniform power distribution. c) Comparing to the cosine axial power distribution, the uniform axial power distribution would make the maximum temperature in each component of the reactor core much lower, reducing the requirements for core fuel material. d) Voltage and current distribution were similar to the axial electrode temperature distribution, and the axial power distribution has little effect on the output power.

  • Increasing heat generation in CPUs can hamper effective recirculation and by-pass because of the large temperature difference between the exhaust and the intake air through a server room. This increases the overall temperature inside a data center and decreases the efficiency of the data center's cooling system. The purpose of the data center's cooling system is to separate the intake and exhaust air by controlling the computer room air-conditioner(CRAC). In this study, ICEPAK is used to conduct a numerical analysis of a data center's cooling system. The temperature distribution and the entire room are analyzed for different volumetric flow rates. The optimized volumetric flow rate is found for each CPU power. The heat removal and temperature distribution for CPU powers of 100, 120, and 140 W are found to be the best for a volumetric flow rate of $0.15m^3/s$. The numerical analysis is verified through RTI indicators, and the results appear to be the most reliable when the RTI value is 81.

  • In the present study, the principle of minimum energy is employed to configure the shape of rivulet flowing down an inclined surface. The profile of laminar rivulet is determined by numerical integration. The maximum center thickness, which corresponds to the minimum thickness of falling film, is found to exist regardless of liquid flow rate and is compared with the analytical and experimental data. At small liquid flow rate the center thickness of rivulet and its width increase almost linearly with flow rate. Once the center thickness of rivulet becomes very close to its maximum value, its growth rate retards abruptly. However the width of rivulet increases proportionally to the liquid flow rate and most part of its free surface is as flat as that of stable film. The growth rate of rivulet thickness with respect to liquid flow rate becomes larger at bigger contact angle. The width of rivulet increases rapidly with its flow rate especially at small contact angle, As the liquid-vapor interfacial shear stress increases, the center thickness of rivulet decreases with its flow rate, which is remarkable at small contact angle. However the effect of interfacial shear stress on the width of rivulet is almost negligible.
