Tidal Level Prediction of Busan Port using Long Short-Term Memory (Long Short-Term Memory를 이용한 부산항 조위 예측)

  • This study developed a Recurrent Neural Network model implemented through Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) that generates long-term tidal level data at Busan Port using tide observation data. The tide levels in Busan Port were predicted by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration (KHOA) using the tide data observed at Busan New Port and Tongyeong as model input data. The model was trained for one month in January 2019, and subsequently, the accuracy was calculated for one year from February 2019 to January 2020. The constructed model showed the highest performance with a correlation coefficient of 0.997 and a root mean squared error of 2.69 cm when the tide time series of Busan New Port and Tongyeong were inputted together. The study's finding reveal that long-term tidal level data prediction of an arbitrary port is possible using the deep learning recurrent neural network model.

  • Steady flow bench test is a practical, powerful and widely used in most engine manufacturers to give a design concept of a new engine. In order to use steady data as a performance index, it is necessary to build some database, which can correlate the port characteristics with engine data. However, it is very difficult to investigate all port shapes with experimental tools. The steady flow scheme is relatively simple and its results are bulk ones such as flow rate and momentum of flow. Therefore a CFD code can be easily applied to the port evaluation. In this study, the steady flow test was simulated through three-dimensional analysis on intake port design for comparing with experimental data and confirming the feasibility of applying analytic method . for this purpose, the effect of valve curvature on flow rate was estimated by a CFD code. Numerical results were compared with those of real steady flow tests. As a result, the results of 3-D analysis were almost consistent with experimental data.

Performance Analysis of Improved Direct Conversion Six-port Phase Correlator (대역폭이 향상된 직접변환 Six-port 위상 상관기 성능분석)

  • In this paper, the six-port phase correlator using $90^{\circ}$ hybrid branch-line coupler and three-arm branch $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler were designed. The performances for two six-port phase correlators were analyzed by using ADS2003A tool. Three-arm six-port phase collerator provides more wide dynamic frequency range than that of six-port using the conventional hybrid coupler in range of circa five times. Six-port phase correlators were fabricated to evaluate the performance of two six-port phase correlators. The measured performances for two six-port phase correlators show the good accordance with the simulation data.

  • Objectives: In order to provide basic data for future researchers, this study aims to explore future tasks after reviewing the changes in port safety management due to the enforcement of the Special Act on Port Safety. Methods: The provisions of the Special Act on Port Safety were analyzed and the latest literature related to port safety management was reviewed. Results: There are two major changes that have stemmed from the Special Act on Port Safety: 1. The scope of application for port participants has been expanded, safety education has been made compulsory, and safety management plans have been established and implemented for each business site. 2. The government is operating a port safety consultative body for each port and has hired one port safety inspector for each of the eleven local maritime and fisheries offices across the country. Future tasks include elaboration of port safety accident statistics, strengthening shipping companies' responsibility for stevedore safety, the unification of contracts, and government interest and support for port safety facilities. Conclusions: The primary feature of the Special Act on Port Safety is the emphasis on autonomous safety management by participants in port transportation. In addition, the enactment of the special law has allowed the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to actively intervene in port loading and unloading safety.

A Measurement Way on the Effectiveness of Port Investment: Congestion Model Approach (항만투자의 유효성 측정방법: congestion모형 접근)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of port investemnt which is one of the important elements for measuring the port efficiency by using congestion approach of DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis). Congestion is said to be present when increases in inputs result in input reductions. Congestion approach takes the forms of weak input disposability and strong input disposability. Empirical analysis by using congestion approach in this paper identified inefficiencies in the inputs including port investment, and indicated inefficient ports like the ports of Sokcho, Gunsan, Pohang, and Seoguipo which shows the large amount of slacks with congestion especially in terms of port investment. Therefore these ports should examine the reason about the inefficiency of port investment. The main policy implication based on the findings of this study is that The Ministry of Maritime Affairs & fisheries in Korea should introduce congestion approach when the amount of port investment to each port is decided.

A Study on the Integrated Database for Port and Logistics (항만 물류 통합데이터베이스의 구축방안)

  • The export/import processing systems of the foreign advanced port use the integrated database to increase the productivity of the users involved in the port and logistics activities. However all the port and logistics related organizations in Korea such as container terminal, customs, ministry of maritime affairs and fisheries, etc. are using their own databases, so it is very inconvenient to the users to process their export/import affairs. It is necessary to develop the integrated database for the port and logistics affairs to provide the one stop service to the port and logistics related users. So we have investigated and analyzed the databases of port and logistics related organizations, and recognized the users' various needs of information. And then we have suggested the conceptual architecture of integrated database for port and logistics, and proposed the strategies for successful development of the integrated database in this paper.

An Analysis of Container Port Efficiency in ASEAN

  • In order to improve the overall ASEAN maritime transport network, each port's efficiency is regarded as a crucial factor that should be calculated periodically. This study evaluated the relative efficiency of container port operations of 32 ports belonging to 9 ASEAN nations using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). It found that 2 out of 32 ports in 2010 were measured as efficient ports. This study yielded two major findings. Firstly, the ports assessed as inefficient need to benchmark similar ports in size and structure from the ports that are assessed as efficient to improve their efficiency. Secondly, these results could be used to determine potential candidates and country for an international port development co-operation programme with Korea to improve the performance of the entire ASEAN port network by developing the infrastructures of ill-equipped ports.

Estimation of Air Pollutant Emissions from Port-Related Sources in the Port of Incheon (인천항 항만시설에서의 대기오염물질 배출량 산정)

  • A port has been regarded as a significant contributor to air pollution in the surrounding areas. Port-related air pollutants are released from not only marine vessels, but also various land-side sources at ports, which include cargo handling equipment, vehicles, locomotives, and fugitive dust sources by port activities such as bulk handling and vehicle movements. However, most studies in Korea have only focused on vessel emissions and there is a lack of information on the emissions from other sources at port. In this study, in order to establish the port-related emission inventory and evaluate the relative contribution of these sources to air emissions from the Port of Incheon, the emissions from land-side sources were estimated and the CAPSS (Clean Air Policy Support System) data for vessel emissions were used. In particular, the detailed information and activity data for the cargo handling equipment source were collected and the emission factors and emissions by equipment types were calculated using U.S. EPA methodologies. Total HC, CO, $NO_x$, $PM_{10}$, and $SO_2$ emissions from port-related sources including the vessel in 2007 were calculated as 229 ton/year, 638 ton/year, 4,861 ton/year, 307 ton/year, and 3,995 ton/year, respectively. It was found that the vessel was the largest contributor to air pollutant emissions from the port, the cargo handling equipment was responsible for about from 8% to 13% of HC, CO, and $NO_x$ emissions and the resuspended road dust contributed about 39% for $PM_{10}$ emissions. The results of this study will be used to establish the management and reduction strategies of air pollution in the port.

A Study on the Data Parallel Processing Between a PC and a Micro-Controller Using a Dual Port RAM (이중 포트 램을 이용한 PC와 마이크로 콘트롤러 사이의 데이터 병렬처리에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the data parallel processing method between a PC and a micro-controller. To implement the method a dual port RAM for a real time data processing is used. In general an A/D & D/AC card is used to send or receive the data into or from the external plant and the PC does only the computation of the A/D and the D/A data because the A/D & D/AC card does not have the ability of computation. In this study, a data parallel processing method in which the PC and micro-controller own a common dual port RAM, is introduced, so that the PC can compute the A/D and D/A data and control the plant simultaneously. The PC system with a micro-controller and the common dual port RAM is designed and its effectiveness is investigated experimentally considering the performance of both the computation of data and the controlling and monitoring the external plant.
