Practical Issues of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) for Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Construction

  • Cost, schedule, and quality are the three major performance indicators for any construction project. Under the globalized competition in the nuclear industry, researchers and practitioners have also explored a systemized and integrated management system for cost, schedule, and quality. In order to address this issue, the concept of earned value management system (EVMS) has been often utilized. However, implementing EVMS for a mega-project of nuclear power plant (NPP) construction requires extensive overhead efforts. Though previous studies proposed structures and methods for effective NPP EVMS, there has been no legitimate study for data collection strategy for practical implementation. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to develop an effective data collection strategy for NPP EVMS. Firstly, the barriers to practical NPP EVMS were identified based on literature review and expert interviews. Strategies for data collection were then developed based on different phases of project life cycle. This study focuses on the 'life-cycle integrated progress management system' for NPP construction from an owner's perspective Therefore, results of this study can be used as a guide for preparing request for proposals (RFP) of an NPP owner organization.

  • 재사용 발사체용으로 개발되는 엔진은 반복 사용 조건에 따른 저사이클 열피로 문제를 고려해야 한다. 본 연구는 연소기 재생냉각채널에 사용되는 구리합금의 피로수명을 인장시험 데이터로부터 예측하기 위하여 기존의 연구자들이 제안하였던 수명예측식을 다양한 종류의 구리합금의 경우에 적용하여 비교하였다. 제안된 수명예측식 중 공통경사법은 구리합금의 수명 예측에서 가장 좋은 결과를 보여 주었으며, 수정 Mitchell 방법은 OFHC 구리의 수명 예측에서 가장 좋은 결과를 보여주었다.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the impact of rapid cycle deliberate practice (RCDP) simulation education on advanced cardiac life support knowledge, confidence, satisfaction, and performance ability among paramedic students, and provide basic data on the appropriate methods of educational instruction. Methods: The 48 subjects to be instructed were divided into the traditional simulation education group and the RCDP simulation education group. Six participants were randomly assigned to each group and pre-surveyed. They were then exposed to a lecture about advanced cardiac life support related theories for 60 min and post-surveyed through questionnaires with the same learning goals and scenarios. Results: The advanced cardiac life support knowledge (t=-4.813, p=.000) and performance ability (t=-2.903, p=.006) were significantly different between the traditional simulation education and RCDP simulation education groups The results also showed a significant difference in attach monitor (z=6.857, p=.009), analyze EKG rhythm (z=11.111, p=.001), and defibrillation (z=12.632, p=.000), indicating differences in performance capabilities between the two groups. Conclusion: To improve advanced cardiac life support knowledge, performance ability, and confidence in the paramedic students who receive RCDP simulation education, simulation education methods that are appropriate for the subjects being taught, and detailed learning goals and feedback are necessary.

수명예측 방법에 따른 계전기의 수명분석 (Life Analysis of Relays based on Life Prediction Method)

  • In order to establish preventive maintenance standards through analysis & reliability prediction of about 60,000pcs of 20kindsof relays and contractors used for Seoul subway trains, several life prediction methodologies were applied. Firstly, Occurrence, Severity, Detection were defined and predicted by applying operation characteristic of EMU to the number of actions of relays & contactors which the manufacturers generally offer as the life cycle data. Secondly, failure distribution and average life of parts were analyzed through interpretation of field data based on a lot of experience which had built up in the field for a long time. Finally, using the 217PLUS standard as a reliability prediction program, comparative analysis of use reliability and inherent reliability was done through reliability prediction at the part level and system level.

  • Engineering asset management (EAM) requires the accurate assessment of current and the prediction of future asset health condition. Suitable mathematical models that are capable of predicting time-to-failure and the probability of failure in future time are essential. In general reliability models, lifetime of component and system is estimated using failure time data. This paper deals with the reliability assessment of elevators using life of main components. Especially this work is concerned with the stochastic nature of life of elevator components. First, we investigate the Weibull statistical analysis of lifetime data for the components. The final goal is to establish the mathematical model for reliability assessment. This work provides more perspectives to future research in the fields of reliability and maintainability.

  • 니켈기 초내열합금은 고온 강도를 지속적으로 증가시키며 현재 비행기 엔진, 선박 엔진 및 발전용 가스터빈 고온 부품 등을 만드는 가장 중요한 소재로 오래전부터 사용되어져 왔다. 이러한 부품의 수명을 연장하기 위해서는 사용 환경과 유사한 조건에서의 피로수명 예측이 매우 중요하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 가스터빈 블레이드 소재인 니켈기 초내열합금 IN738LC에 대하여 실제운전환경과 유사한 조건을 설정하여 다양한 변형률 범위와 온도에서 시험을 수행하였다. 저주기 피로수명을 예측하기 위하여 변형률 에너지 밀도와 파단 사이클과의 관계를 사용하였다. 수명의 예측은 시험결과를 토대로 변형률 에너지법과 Coffin-Manson법에 의하여 예측을 하였다.

Picropodophyllotoxin Induces G1 Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis in Human Colorectal Cancer Cells via ROS Generation and Activation of p38 MAPK Signaling Pathway

  • Picropodophyllotoxin (PPT), an epimer of podophyllotoxin, is derived from the roots of Podophyllum hexandrum and exerts various biological effects, including anti-proliferation activity. However, the effect of PPT on colorectal cancer cells and the associated cellular mechanisms have not been studied. In the present study, we explored the anticancer activity of PPT and its underlying mechanisms in HCT116 cells. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to monitor cell viability. Flow cytometry was used to evaluate cell cycle distribution, the induction of apoptosis, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), assess the mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm), and multi-caspase activity. Western blot assays were performed to detect the expression of cell cycle regulatory proteins, apoptosis-related proteins, and p38 MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase). We found that PPT induced apoptosis, cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase, and ROS in the HCT116 cell line. In addition, PPT enhanced the phosphorylation of p38 MAPK, which regulates apoptosis and PPT-induced apoptosis. The phosphorylation of p38 MAPK was inhibited by an antioxidant agent (N-acetyl-L-cysteine, NAC) and a p38 inhibitor (SB203580). PPT induced depolarization of the mitochondrial inner membrane and caspase-dependent apoptosis, which was attenuated by exposure to Z-VAD-FMK. Overall, these data indicate that PPT induced G1 arrest and apoptosis via ROS generation and activation of the p38 MAPK signaling pathway.

  • 전 세계적으로 지구온난화의 원인인 대기 중 온실가스 농도를 감축하는 여러 정책들이 모든 산업을 망라하여 추진되고 있다. 식량안보라는 특수성은 있지만, 농업도 예외는 아니다. 이런 취지에서 최근에 농산물의 전체 생산과정에서 발생하는 탄소배출량을 산정하고, 이를 토대로 탄소배출량이 적은 농산물 생산방식을 도입하고자 하는 요구가 증가하고 있다. LCA 도구를 농업분야의 환경평가에 적용한 해외 연구 사례들을 살펴보면, 스위스는 Ecoinvent가 주축이 되어 농작물, 농업기반시설, 농자재, 농기계 등 농축산 전반에 대한 LCI D/B를 구축하여 제공하고 있고, 우리와 농업시스템이 유사한 일본은 산업연관분석을 이용하여 농업을 위한 Top-down 방식의 LCA 수행 방법론을 개발하였으며, 이를 농작물 생산 방식에 따라 평가하고 농업분야에 대한 영향평가 방법론과 가중치를 개발하였다. 반면에 국내의 LCA를 통한 농업환경영향평가는 출발 단계에 있다. 따라서 농업환경에 있어 주요 인자인 비료 및 농약에 대한 환경영향을 평가하고 이를 위한 국내 비료와 농약의 흐름 모델링, 방법론 개발이 요구되며, 국내 농업 시스템을 반영한 기타 농자재, 농기계 및 농업기반시설에 대한 환경영향평가 역시 수행되어야 한다.

  • 가축분뇨 처리시스템에 대한 환경영향을 분석하기 위하여 전과정 평가방법을 적용하였다. 전과정평가의 첫 번째 부분은 사용될 분석 항목을 구성하는 것으로, 가축분뇨 처리시스템에 대한 유입 및 배출에 대한 항목이다. 전과정 영향평가를 위한 다음 단계로서 전체 환경부하를 최종적으로 하나의 지수로 통합하기 위하여, 특정 항목에 대한 자료를 취합하고 분석하는 것이다. 전과정 영향평가를 위해, Eco-indicator 95 방법은 체계화 되었으며, 규칙적으로 적용된 영향평가 방법이기 때문에 선택하였다. 전과정 영향 분석을 위한 실례로서 호기 및 혐기소화 시스템과 같은 두 종류의 돈분 처리시스템을 선정하였다. 돈 분뇨 처리시스템에 대한 농업환경영향을 평가한 항목을 확립하였고, 혐기소화시스템에서는 전 인산 배출이 높았으며, 호기소화시스템에서는 이산화탄소 배출이 높은 것으로 관측되었다. 돈분 1ton을 처리하는데 관련된 돈분처리시스템에 대한 환경영향 평가에서 Eco-indicator 수치에 따르면, 호기소화 시스템에 있어 지구온난화 및 토양산성화에서 음의 지수를 보인 반면 혐기소화시스템은 수계 부영양화 부분에서 비교적 높은 양의 지수를 보였다.

Biology of a predatory bug Eocanthecona furcellata Wolff (Hemiptera : Pentatomidae) on Vapourer tussock moth larvae: a major pest of tasar silkworm food plants

  • Tropical Tasar culture is forest and agro-based activity that covers agricultural and industrial activity. Tasar silk is produced by the silkworm, Antheraea mylitta which is polyphagous in nature. A large number of pests are reported to attack both the host plant as well as silkworm. As the rearing is conducted outdoor silkworms are exposed to attack of various pests during their life cycle. Eocanthecona furcellata (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is the major predator of tasar silkworm during young age rearing. Both nymphs and adults of the stink bug suck the heamolymph of silkworm leading to death. The present work was undertaken to study the life cycle of E. furcellata on larvae of vapourer tussock moth which is a major pest of tasar host plants. The incubation period, nymphal duration and total developmental period from egg to adult was $8.0{\pm}0.45d$, $16.0{\pm}3.24$ and $22.0{\pm}4.20d$, respectively. Pre-oviposition, oviposition and longevity of male and female stink bug was $3.20{\pm}0.38$, $17.60{\pm}1.86$, $42.40{\pm}1.94$, $37.00{\pm}3.18d$, respectively. Analysis of the data revealed no significant difference in life cycle of the predator when provided silkworm and vapourer tussock moth larvae as hosts. Which clearly indicates that E. furcellata can multiply on vapourer tussock moth larvae during non rearing periods. Adoption of recommended pest control measures for defoliators of tasar host plants during non-rearing periods will help in reducing the incidence of host plant pests and also in reducing the incidence of stink bug during rearing season. During the study it was also observed that larvae semilooper, boll headed caterpillar and nymphs of leaf hopper serve as alternate/secondary hosts to E. furcellata during non rearing seasons.
