  • This exploratory study aimed to explore the perception (knowledge and attitude) and behaviors of medical personnel regarding medical device safety and to identify the differences in results linked with the type of their task. A questionnaire was administered to medical personnel working at a tertiary care hospital with 900 beds in Incheon, Korea, and 220 completed questionnaires were used for analysis. The results revealed that the majority of the medical personnel perceived the potential risk involved in different types of medical devices they use and stated that they need training programs for safe use of medical devices. Concerning the perception regarding medical devices across different positions within the hospital, it was found that the residents had a low awareness about safety issues, although the medical services they handled involve high risks, thereby calling for safety training. Further nationwide studies are needed to improve the quality and validity of data and eventually to provide important information required by policy makers and academicians to manage medical device safety.

  • The notion of productivity has been extended from the quantitative change of input factors to the efficiency change meaning efficient use of resources, and to the technical change meaning the qualitative improvement of input resources. In this way, the technical change is termed as total factor productivity in the individual businesses or the manufacturing industries. They should efficiently respond to the variations of economic environment and at the same time, have to make the efforts to improve productivity by increasing managerial efficiency and rasing the level of technology change for the continuous growth. Considering the growing importance of productivity, this study closely examines the factors influctuation on the productivity, fluctuation using total factor productivity in korean manufacturing industries. For the objective this study investigates the methods of measurement about total factor productivity, establishes the hypotheses based on the preceding research and finding. The results are obtained through the examination on the outcoms of regression analysis and related data. The results can be summarized as follows, First, in the progress of korean industrialization, the qualitative growth does not depend on the total factor productivity of the technical advance, and does not lead to the industry expansion. That is, the contribution of total factor productivity turns out to be relatively low. Second, it is necessary for the manufacturing industry to improve the level of technology and to emphasize the innovation of business, since the capital investment does not completely become fixed in the growth rate of productivity. Finally, continuous R&D investment should be made to increase total factor productivity. Namely, the regulation of industrial structure with an intensive technical development is essential and should be based on scientific and technical knowledge.

  • In order to survive worldwide competition, today's industries are experiencing strong pressure to introduce higher quality products with lower cost and shorter lead-time. Therefore, the role of design in the process of product development is increasing in significance. In this research, two methods for improving the design capability are proposed: construction of design environment and design automation using 3D CAD system. The designers and design process are the core of product design using 3D CAD system. In order to maximize the design performance, construction of the design environment including selection of a suitable system, designer training for best use of the system, establishment of an efficient design process, and stabilization of the environment are required. A method is suggested to construct design environment by systematizing the contents of the projects and consulting experiences carried out for various categories of business such as electronic devices, motorcycles, electricity parts, sanitary wares, injection molds, and die casing molds. Design automation helps reduce tedious and time-consuming jobs, simplify complicated and error-prone modeling and drawing works to shorten the lead time and improve the product quality. To develop a design automation system, understanding the process and the related knowledge on design are very important before implementing the system using API provided by 3D CAD system. In this research, an eight-step procedure is proposed for the development of a design automation system. These eight steps are analysis of needs, determination of specification, verification of specification using 3D CAD system, inspection of related API functions, programming, field test, application in practice, and maintenance. A case study in which five design automation systems in the design of turbine generators using the proposed method is introduced in detail. These systems play important roles in the generation of various output items including 3D models, drafts, material information, and NC data. The case study shows how effectively the design time is reduced and the quality improved using those systems.

  • Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (SRTM DEM) offers opportunities to make advances in many research areas including hydrology by providing near-global scale elevation measurements at a uniform resolution. Its wide coverage and complimentary online access especially benefits researchers requiring topographic information of hard-to-access areas. However, SRTM DEM also contains inherent errors, which are subject to propagation with its manipulation into analysis outputs. Sensitivity of hydrologic analysis to the errors has not been fully understood yet. This study investigated their impact on estimation of hydrologic derivatives such as slope, stream network, and watershed boundary using Monte Carlo simulation and spatial moving average techniques. Different amount of the errors and their spatial auto-correlation structure were considered in the study. Two sub-watersheds of Geum and Deadong River areas located in South and North Korea, respectively, were selected as the study areas. The results demonstrated that the spatial presentations of stream networks and watershed boundaries and their length and area estimations could be greatly affected by the SRTM DEM errors, in particular relatively flat areas. In the Deadong River area, artifacts of the SRTM DEM created sinks even after the filling process and then closed drainage basin and short stream lines, which are not the case in the reality. These findings provided an evidence that SRTM DEM alone may not enough to accurately figure out the hydrologic feature of a watershed, suggesting need of local knowledge and complementary data.

  • National R&D programs play an important role in the development of a country in this age of the knowledge economy. Since many numbers of R&D programs compete for limited resources such as national R&D budget, the R&D program evaluation problem is a challenging decision-making problem faced by decision makers that deal with R&D management. In this sense, DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) has been regarded as one of the most widely accepted methods to measure the relative efficiency of productivity of R&D programs. DEA is a methodology to measure and to evaluate the relative efficiency of a homogeneous set of decision-making units(DMUs) in a process which uses multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. However, the sample of the R&D programs could consist of two or more naturally occurring subsets, thus exhibiting clear signs of heterogeneity such as different objectives. In such situations, the fairness of DEA is limited, for the nature of the relative efficiency of a DMU is likely to be influenced by its membership in a particular subset of the sample. In this study, we propose a methodology AI-DEA(attainment index DEA) allowing for reflecting decision maker's subjective judgement on difference among different subsets of R&D programs which have heterogeneous objectives. This methodology combines AHP and Delphi in order to decide the attainmnet index of each DMU for each outputs, and apply them to DEA model. We illustrate the proposed approach with a pilot evaluation of 13 programs involving 6 different subsets of Korean National R&D programs and compares the results of the original DEA model and AI-DEA model.

  • A tunnel design expert system entitled NESTED is developed using the artificial neural network. The expert system includes three neural network computer models designed for the stability assessment of underground openings and the estimation of correlation between the RMR and Q systems. The expert system consists of the three models and the computerized rock mass classification programs that could be driven under the same user interface. As the structure of the neural network, a multi -layer neural network which adopts an or ror back-propagation learning algorithm is used. To set up its knowledge base from the prior case histories, an engineering database which can control the incomplete and erroneous information by learning process is developed. A series of experiments comparing the results of the neural network with the actual field observations have demonstrated the inferring capabilities of the neural network to identify the possible failure modes and the support timing. The neural network expert system thus complements the incomplete geological data and provides suitable support recommendations for preliminary design of tunnels in rock masses.

  • Much technologies building cloud computing environment and supporting sevices on the cloud computing have been developing. Through the environment, accessing new services and sharing knowledge become easy. So far, they have just focused on companies which can support services and people who can use those services. In other words, the environment and models for cloud computing are the most important issue. However, the environment changes rapidly, mobile devices that are connected with each other not only will replace the computing environment based on desktop, but also can create Big data. Therefore, technologies and models are need to follow the trend including mobile based cloud computing environment. In this paper, we explain the cloud computing technologies and trend. Also we address Machine to Machine(M2M) technology and Web of things(WoT) in order to apply those into the cloud computing environment because these two concepts will enhance effectiveness and service reusability in the coming days.

  • Recent advancement in ICT and IT infrastructure drives the construction industry towards a IT-based industry. Accordingly, the importance of the planning phase of a project is significantly highlighted due to recent large-scale national development projects such as U-city and multifunctional administration city. various development and studies are conducted on the convergence of 3D CAD and GIS in order to support the decision making by simulation of each phase of construction prior to the actual construction of a building. However there has been limits to the implementation of the IT technology in the planning phase due to its characteristics such as high reliability on the experts knowledge and the compliance of the administration work. In this study, a trendy issue of the convergence of the GIS technology with the 3D CAD design data is suggested to improve the efficiency of a decision support in the planning phase.

  • Over the last couple of years, traditional VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc NETwork) evolved into VANET-based clouds. From the VANET standpoint, applications became richer by virtue of the boom in automotive telematics and infotainment technologies. Nevertheless, the research community and industries are concerned about the under-utilization of rich computation, communication, and storage resources in middle and high-end vehicles. This phenomenon became the driving force for the birth of VANET-based clouds. In this paper, we envision a novel application layer of VANET-based clouds based on the cooperation of the moving cars on the road, called CaaS (Cooperation as a Service). CaaS is divided into TIaaS (Traffic Information as a Service), WaaS (Warning as a Service), and IfaaS (Infotainment as a Service). Note, however, that this work focuses only on TIaaS and WaaS. TIaaS provides vehicular nodes, more precisely subscribers, with the fine-grained traffic information constructed by CDM (Cloud Decision Module) as a result of the cooperation of the vehicles on the roads in the form of mobility vectors. On the other hand, WaaS provides subscribers with potential warning messages in case of hazard situations on the road. Communication between the cloud infrastructure and the vehicles is done through GTs (Gateway Terminals), whereas GTs are physically realized through RSUs (Road-Side Units) and vehicles with 4G Internet access. These GTs forward the coarse-grained cooperation from vehicles to cloud and fine-grained traffic information and warnings from cloud to vehicles (subscribers) in a secure, privacy-aware fashion. In our proposed scheme, privacy is conditionally preserved wherein the location and the identity of the cooperators are preserved by leveraging the modified location-based encryption and, in case of any dispute, the node is subject to revocation. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed scheme is the first effort to offshore the extended traffic view construction function and warning messages dissemination function to the cloud.
