  • Planetary Speed Reducer consists of a sun gear, a planetary gear and a ring gear and if one element is fixed at this Speed Reducer, another elements operate to become a drive-axis and a subordination-axis respectively. Planetary Speed Reducer is frequently used for gear Speed Reducer because it has the advantage of having the high efficiency and getting the high Speed Reducer ratio in small space. However, it is difficult to know the current transmitted torque immediately during the use of Speed Reducer and so complicated equipment is installed in addition to protect the overload of system. The object of this paper is to design the Speed Reducer of torque- meter type that can know the torque transmitted using the power transmission feature of a simple Planetary Speed Reducer fixed at ring gear.

  • This paper presents offline estimation of equivalent physical damping parameter in haptic interaction systems where damping is the most important parameter for stability. Based on the previous energy bounding algorithm, an offline procedure is developed in order to estimate the physical damping parameter of a haptic device by measuring energy flow-in to the haptic device. The proposed method does not use force/torque sensor at the handgrip. Numerical simulation and experiments verified effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Rotary dampers are damping devices which provide high resistance to shaft rotation. Rotary dampers are being used in various areas to enable the gentle opening and closing of the rotation motion relative to home furniture, industry machinery and automotive parts. Rotary dampers can be installed directly at the rotating point of a various part and can achieve uniform, gentle movement which increases quality and value of products. And generally, the silicone fluid is used as the damping medium because of its stable viscous properties. The movement of these little decelerators can be achieved with a high viscosity of working fluid and throttles installed in the body of the rotary damper. The damping force can be achieved clockwise, anti-clockwise or in both directions according to the structure of the orifices or throttles. In this paper, the torque performances of the rotary damper containing air in the working fluid were studied. For this purpose, the torque characteristic of the rotary damper according to the variation of various operating conditions such as clearance of leakage, dimensions of groove orifice, content ratio of air, etc., were simulated with AMEsim software.

  • Gearboxes are often used in the petrochemical and electrical power plants to transmit mechanical power between two branches of a machinery train rotating at different speeds. When the gearboxes are connected with rotors supported by journal bearings, bearing loads vary in magnitude and direction with rotor speed and torque transmitted by the gearboxes. In this study, dynamic characteristics of the system which consists of gearboxes and a rotor supported by journal bearings are investigated analytically and experimentally by employing the polynomial transfer matrix method and modal analysis under different speeds and torque levels. Journal bearing loads due to the transmitted torque are claculated analytically and the stiffness and damping coefficient of the journal bearings are obtained using finite element method. Comparison of the analytical and experimental results shows that the cross coupled stiffness coefficients increase with increasing rotor speed, while the cross coupled damping coefficients decrease. This generates the oil whirl instability in the journal bearings. As the transmitted torque level goes up, the stiffness coefficients of the journal bearing and the first horizontal natural frequency increase. High levels of the transmitted torque produce high bearing stiffness since the contact loads of the mating gear teeth increase. The logarithmic decrement, which is a stability indicator, is shown to decrease with increasing speed and decreasing torque. Thus, at the low torque level, the system become unstable even at the low shaft speed.

  • TMED(Transmission Mounted Electric Device) parallel hybrid configuration can realize EV(Electric Vehicle) mode by disengaging the clutch between an engine and a transmission-mounted motor to improve efficiencies of low load driving and regenerative braking. In the EV mode, however, jerk can be induced since there are insufficient damping elements in the drive-train. Though the jerk gives demoralizing influence upon driving comport, adding a physical damper is not applicable due to constraints of the layout. This study suggests the jerk reduction control, composed of active damping method and torque profiling method, to suppress the jerk without hardware modification. The former method creates a virtual damper by generating absorbing torque in the opposite direction of the oscillation. The latter method reduces impulse on the mated gear teeth of the drive-train by limiting the gradient of traction torque when the direction of the torque is reversed. To validate the effectiveness of the suggested strategy, a series of vehicle tests are carried out and it is observed that the amplitude of the oscillation can be reduced by up to 83%.

  • In this study, the effect of load torque on the synchronous whirling of a rotor system has been studied analytically. Results show that the critical value of load torque to damping exists above which synchronous response decreases with increasing load torque. It has been also shown that the synchronous whirling amplitudes are more sensitive to the value of eccentricity and the ratio of disk radius to shaft length of the rotor system than other design parameters for a fixed value of load torque.

  • The basic function of a Power-System Stabilizer(PSS) is to add damping to the generator rotor oscillations by controlling its excitation using auxiliary stabilizing signals. To provide damping. the stabilizer must produce a component of electrical torque in phase with the rotor speed deviations. This paper introduces the hardware specifications and various functions of microprocessor (TMS320C32)-based digital PSS to provide the damping torque.

  • Steady and unsteady flows between rotating cylinders are of interest on lubrication, convective heat transfer and flow-induced vibration in large rotating machinery. Steady rotating flow is generated by rotating cylinder with constant velocity while the unsteady rotating flow by oscillating cylinder with homogeneoysly oscillating velocity. An analytical method is developed based on the simple radial coordinate transformation for the steady and unsteady rotating flows in concentric annulus. The governing equations are simplified from Navier-Stokes equatins. Considering the skin friction based on the radial variation of circumferential flow velocity, the torques acting on the fixed and the rotating cylinder are evaluated in terms of added-inertia and added-damping torque coefficients. The coefficients are found to be influenced by the oscillatory Reynolds number and the radius ratio of two cylinders; however, the effect of the oscillatory Reynolds number on the coefficients is minor in case of relatively low radius ratio.

  • A rotor-bearing system has been investigated, including internal damping and axial torque using finite dynamic elements. A procedure is presented for dynamic modeling of rotor-bearing system which consist of finite dynamic shaft elements, rigid disk, and bearing and seal. A finite dynamic element model including the effects of rotatory inertia, gyroscopic moments, axial force, and axial torque is developed using the frequency dependent shape function. The natural whirl speeds, stability, and unbalance response of rotor system are calculated on several cases and compared with the conventional finite elements.

  • The nonstationary vibration of a rotor carrying two discs with a limited driving torque is studied theoretically by using the method of the perturbation theory. The influence of the asymmetry, torque, damping and phase difference in passing through a critical speed is studied in detail, considering the interaction between the driving source and the vibration system.
