This paper deals with a robust semi-active control algorithm which is applicable to a semi-active suspension with a multi-state damper. Since the controllable damping rates are discrete in case of a multi-state semi-active damper, the desired damping rate can not be produced exactly even if force-velocity relations of a multi-state semi-active damper is completely known. In addition, damping characteristics of the semi-active dampers are different from damper to damper. A robust nonlinear control law based on sliding control is developed. The main objective of the proposed control strategies is to improve ride quality by tracking the desired active force with a multi-state damper of which the force-velocity relations are "not" completely known. The performance of th proposed semi-active control law is numerically compared to those of the control law based on a bilinear model and a passive suspension. The proposed control algorithm is robust to nonlinear characteristics and uncertainty of the force-Velocity relations of multi-state dampers.

Base isolation is an effective method for protecting structures against earthquake hazard. It elongates the period of vibration and introduces supplemental damping to the structural system. The stiffness, damping and displacement are coupled forcing the code seismic design procedure to be unnecessarily complicated. In addition, the force reduction factor -a key parameter in the design procedurehas not been well addressed by seismic design codes at the high levels of damping due to the pronounced difference between pseudo and actual accelerations. In this study, a comparison has been conducted to evaluate eight different methods, in the literature, for calculating the force reduction factor due to damping. Accordingly, a simplified seismic analysis procedure has been proposed based on the well documented N2 method. Comprehensive analysis has been performed for base-isolated structure models for direct application and verification of the proposed procedure. The results have been compared with those of the European code EC8, the nonlinear time history analysis and investigations in the literature, where good agreement has been reported. In addition, a discussion has been elaborated for the resulted response of the base-isolated structure models with respect to the dynamic characteristics of the base isolation system.
An experimental study is performed to investigate the frequency effects of the excitation force on the linear stiffness and damping coefficients of a LOP (load on pad) type five-pad tilting pad journal bearing with the diameter of 300.91 mm and the length of 149.80 mm. The main parameter of interest in the present work is excitation frequency to shake the test bearing. The excitation frequency is controlled independently, using orthogonally mounted hydraulic exciters. The relative movement between the bearing and shaft, and the acceleration of the bearing casing are measured as a function of excitation frequency using the different values of bearing load and shaft speed. Measurements show that the variation of excitation frequency has quite a little effect on both stiffness and damping coefficients. Both direct stiffness and damping coefficients in the direction of bearing load decrease by the increase of shaft speed, but increase with the bearing load.

This paper presents offline estimation of equivalent physical damping parameter in haptic interaction systems where damping is the most important parameter for stability. Based on the previous energy bounding algorithm, an offline procedure is developed in order to estimate the physical damping parameter of a haptic device by measuring energy flow-in to the haptic device. The proposed method does not use force/torque sensor at the handgrip. Numerical simulation and experiments verified effectiveness of the proposed method.
The floating body discussed in this study is a 2-D rectangular floating unit supported by four vertical piles at its corners. Structures of this type are frequently seen as floating piers for the crafts in a small harbour. The movement in some modes of motion of such a flating body is fully or partially restrincted by the piles. The authors(Kim et al. 1994) carried out a series of model tests on its wave control function, its motion and the loads on piles. The experimental results showed that a certain degree of intial constriction force which clamps the floating unit in the horizontal direction can effectively reduce the body motion and wave energy without increasing mooring forces. This may be due to the friction forces occuring between the piles and the rollers installed in the mooring equipments on the floating unit. In this paper, we develop a numerical model for the prediction of wave transformation and floating body motions, where the friction force is idealized as the Coulomb friction and linearized into a damping force using the equivalent damping cofficient. This linearization is verified by comparing the results of motions between the linear and nonlinear analysis of the ezuations of motion. We further compare the caculation results by the linear model with the experimental results and discuss the effect of the friction force or the constriction force on body motions and wave energy dissipation.

Friction damping is one of the attractive vibration control technique for space structures due to its simplicity and large damping capacity. However, passive approaches for friction damping have a limitation because energy is no longer dissipated at sticking. In order to overcome this problem, semi-active control methods to adjust normal force at frictional interface have been studied in previous researches. In this paper, two semi-active friction control method is compared by simulating SDOF model of truss structure. The first approach is on-off control to maximize rate of energy dissipation, whereas the second concept is variable friction force control to minimize amplitude ratio for each half period. The maximum friction force, control variable in on-off control method, is obtained to minimize 1% settling time, and is different from optimal friction force in passive control. Simulation results show that performance of on-off control is better than that of variable friction force control in terms of settling time and controlled friction force.

Passive control may not provide enough damping for a stay cable since the control devices are often restricted to a low location level. In order to enhance control performance of conventional passive dampers, a new type of damper integrated with a rotary electromagnetic damper providing variable damping force and a flywheel serving as an inertial mass, called the rotary electromagnetic inertial mass damper (REIMD), is presented for suppressing the cable vibrations in this paper. The mechanical model of the REIMD is theoretically derived according to generation mechanisms of the damping force and the inertial force, and further validated by performance tests. General dynamic characteristics of an idealized taut cable with a REIMD installed close to the cable end are theoretically investigated, and parametric analysis are then conducted to investigate the effects of inertial mass and damping coefficient on vibration control performance. Finally, vibration control tests on a scaled cable model with a REIMD are performed to further verify mitigation performance through the first two modal additional damping ratios of the cable. Both the theoretical and experimental results show that control performance of the cable with the REIMD are much better than those of conventional passive viscous dampers, which mainly attributes to the increment of the damper displacement due to the inertial mass induced negative stiffness effects of the REIMD. Moreover, it is concluded that both inertial mass and damping coefficient of an optimum REIMD will decrease with the increase of the mode order of the cable, and oversize inertial mass may lead to negative effect on the control performance.
As a secondary suspension, the air spring has not good lateral stiffness characteristics. In order to make up for this weak point, lateral damper is used between bogie and carbody. The lateral vibration of carbody can be reduced by the lateral damper. When the damping force of lateral damper becomes worse, the running stability and ride comfort of the railway vehicle go down. Simultaneously the lateral motion of carbody is increased. In this study, the lateral displacement of carbody was studied by the multibody dynamic analysis in accordance with lateral damping force to find the cause of abnormal noise(impact noise) when the vehicle is running. The suitable lateral damping force was reviewed in order not to generate abnormal noise.
