Damping-off, caused by Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium ultimum, is a very important plant disease and affects seeds and seedlings of many plant species worldwide. To investigate control efficacy of Serenade formulation (1.34%, SC) against Rhizoctonia and Pythium damping-off diseases, seeds of chili pepper and cucumber were sown in soils inoculated with R. solani and P. ultimum and Serenade formulation was applied by soil-drenching with 9-, 19-, and 39-fold dilutions. Control values of Serenade formulation on Rhizoctonia damping-off of chili pepper was 58% and 29% for 9- and 19-fold dilutions, respectively. In the case of cucumber Rhizoctonia damping-off, Serenade treatments showed similar control efficacy with damping-off of chili pepper. On the other hand, control efficacy of Serenade formulation on Pythium damping-off of cucumber was less than control effects on Rhizoctonia damping-off. Only Pythium damping-off of chili pepper treated with 9-fold dilution Serenade was statistically different with untreated control. This result suggest that Serenade formulation could be effectively used for controlling Rhizoctonia and Pythium damping-off diseases.
Several microbial biocontrol products (Greenbiotech Co., Paju, Korea), Green-all T (Trichoderma harzianum), Green-all S(Bacillus sp.) and Green-all G (Streptomyces sp.) were supplemented with organic amendments such as sawdusts and rice hulls to study on efficacy of biological control of seeding damping-off of cucumber caused by Pythium ultimum. Sawdusts amended into potato dextrose agar alone could inhibit in vitro mycelial growth of P. ultimum. All there microbial products of Green-all T, Green-all G and Green-all S significantly reduced seeding damping-off (LSD, P=0.05). However, several amendments such as sawdusts and rice hulls into Green-all T and Green-all S products did not increase efficacy of biological control compared to non-amended treatment. In contrast, supplements of aminodoctor containing several amino acids (Greenbiotech Co., Korea) into Green-all G product significantly increased efficacy of biological control of seeding damping-off, resulting in from 42% to 2% disease incidence in relation to seedling emergence (LSD, P=0.05). Also, amendment of sawdusts into Tricoderma product significantly increased efficacy of biological control as disease index of 5.0 compared to non-amended control of 56.0 in Green-all T product alone. This indicates that organic amendments could increase efficacy of biological control of cucumber seedling damping-off.

In this paper, hydraulic damper was studied to solve vibration problems of bridge, structures and several mechanic parts rising magnetic fluid. The damper was modeled using Magneto Rheological fluid and MR damper was manufactured on the basis of design drawing. To investigate the efficacy of magneto rheological phenomenon. experiments were performed on the several design parameters using Universal Testing Machine(UTM). Damping efficacy were examined by frequencies. displacement and electric currents through experiments.

The concept of introducing viscous damping devices between outriggers and perimeter columns in tall buildings to provide supplementary damping and improve performance, reduce structural costs, and increase available usable area was developed and implemented by Smith and Willford (2007). It was recognized that the relative vertical movement that would occur between the ends of outriggers and columns, if they were not connected, could be used to generate damping. The movements, and correspondingly damping, can potentially be significantly increased by amplifying them using simple "mechanisms". The mechanisms also make it possible to increase the number of available dampers and thus further increase supplementary damping. The feasibility of mechanisms to amplify supplementary damping and enhance structural performance of tall, slender buildings is studied with particular focus on its efficacy in improving structural performance in wind loads.
Ginseng damping-off, caused by the fungal pathogens Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium sp., is a critical disease in ginseng seedling. In a continuing effort to find microorganisms with the potential of acting as a biocontrol agent against Rhizoctonia damping-off, we found that a Streptomyces sp. A501 showed significant antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani. In field experiment to test the efficacy of Streptomyces sp. A501 in controlling ginseng damping-off, the incidence of damping-off disease was meaningfully reduced when ginseng seeds were soaked in the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. A501 before sowing. To perform characterization of the antifungal compound, we isolated it from the culture broth of strain A501 through Diaion HP-20 and silica gel column chromatographies and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The structure of the antifungal compound was assigned as fungichromin by spectroscopic methods, mainly nuclear magnetic resonance and electrospray ionization-mass analysis.

In this paper, the feasibility of the high-performance damping device vibration suppression of stay cables has been investigated. The proposed damping system consists of a linear viscous damper and a scissor-jack-type toggle linkage. Since the mechanism of the scissor-jack-type toggle linkage amplifies the relative displacement of the linear viscous damper, it is expected that the capacity of the viscous damper used in the scissor-jack-damper energy dissipation system can be reduced without the loss of the control performance. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the damping system employing the scissor-jack-type toggle linkage. Therefore, the proposed damping system could be considered as one of the promising candidates for suppressing vibration of stay cable.

Wind induced vibration of a stay cable with a nonlinear friction damper is investigated. Stay cables are likely to vibrate under several wind-related environments, and cable dampers can be used to suppress the excessive vibrations of stay cables. Conventional design of cable dampers are based on the equivalent modal damping achieved by the cable damper. However, the equivalent modal damping achieved by nonlinear dampers are depend on the vibration characteristics like the amplitude of the vibration. In this paper, not only the achieved equivalent modal damping, but also the vibration levels under gust wind are analyzed through the time domain buffeting analysis. Numerical simulation results show the efficacy of a nonlinear friction damper for suppressing the excessive vibration of a stay cable.
Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) possesses various biological and pharmacological properties. Damping-off is a critical disease on ginseng seedlings, which is caused by the fungal pathogens Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium sp.. This disease is generally controlled by the application of fungicides, but also biological control is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to prevent ginseng damping-off. In a previous study, we screened soil-borne bacteria with potential applications as biological control agents for ginseng damping-off and selected the bacterial strain Streptomyces sp. A3265, producing antifungal substances guanidylfungin and methylguanidylfungin. In this study, we investigated control efficacy of Streptomyces sp. A3265 against ginseng damping-off in the field. As a result, the incidence of damping-off was significantly reduced when soaking ginseng seeds in the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. A3265.

In the study, the effects of damping devices on damping ratio increase and wind-load reduction were investigated based on the computational platform, which is one of the parametric modeling methods. The computational platform helps the designers or engineers to evaluate the efficacy of the numerous alternative structural systems for irregular Super-Tall building, which is crucial in determining the capacity and the number of the supplemental damping devices for adding the required damping ratios to the building. The inherent damping ratio was estimated based on the related domestic and foreign researches conducted by using real wind-load records. Two types of damping devices were considered: One is inter-story installation type passive control devices and the other is mass type active control devices. The supplemental damping ratio due to the damping devices was calculated by means of equivalent static analysis using an equation suggested by FEMA. The optimal design of the damping devices was conducted by using the computational platform. The structural element quantity reduction effect resulting from the installation of the damping devices could be simply assessed by proposing a wind-load reduction factor, and the effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by a numerical example of a 455m high-rise building. The comparison between roof displacement and the story shear forces by the nonlinear time history analysis and the proposed method indicated that the proposed method could simply but approximately estimate the effects of the supplemental damping devices on the roof displacement and the member force reduction.
