  • Polyurethane multi-layer and foam multi-layer were prepared with PU1000 and PU2000 made by poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) having the molecular weight of 1000 and 2000 g/mol, respectively. The damping and transmission loss of these materials were compared with PU1000 used as a reference. The damping peak of polyurethane multi-layer was shifted to the lower temperature compared with PU1000, while the damping peak of polyurethane foam multi-layer was shifted to the higher temperature and broaden. In terms of noise reduction, the transmission loss of polyurethane multi-layer was effective at the specific frequency range such as less than 100 Hz and around 600 Hz compared with PU1000. The transmission loss of polyurethane foam multi-layer was most effective in the whole experimental frequency range.

  • Supersonic flutter analysis of cylindrical composite panels with structural damping treatments has been performed using the finite element method based on the layerwise shell theory. The natural frequencies and loss factors of cylindrical viscoelastic composites are computed considering the effects of transversely shear deformation. The panel flutter of cylindrical composite panels is analyzed considering structural damping effect. Various damping characteristics for unconstrained layer damping, constrained layer damping, and symmetrically co-cured sandwich laminates are compared with those of an original base panel in view of aeroelastic stabilities.

  • The vibration isolator system(VIS) which has very low natural frequency could be designed by applying an axial compressive force to the beam-column flexure(BCF). In this paper a new shape of the BCF is suggested. It has stepwise axially varying properties by viscoelastic damping layer. So it has internal structural damping by damping layer during deformation. First the analytic solution is obtained for the BCF. And its critical load, buckling mode, stiffness and stress distributions are investigated. Also the dynamic properties of the VIS consist of the damping layered BCF are studied. Finally the optimal design procedure of damping layered BCF for the VIS is suggested. The improved performance of suggested VIS is verified by some experiments.

  • Reid and Kajiura(1957) has studied on the wave damping rate over a permeable bed of infinite depth. In this study, wave damping rate over a permeable bed of finite depth is derived by linear wave theory. It is then extended to derive wave damping rates over a double or triple layer, each of which consist of different material. Applying the wave damping rate to the mild slope equation, the wave transmission coefficient over a permeable bed has been calculated. The model has been certificated by comparing with the result of Flaten and Rygg(1991)'s integral equation method in the case of a single-layer bed.

  • The aeroelastic stability enhancement of composite hingeless rotor system through the structural damping increase has been investigated. In order to increase structural damping of the rotor system, constrained layer damping (CLD) treatment is applied to the composite flexures. Modal analysis of composite flexures with attached viscoelastic and constraining layers are performed using MSC/NASTRAN, and the effectiveness of CLD treatments are validated through modal test. The composite flexures with CLD are applied to a hingeless rotor system. The rotor system is tested in hovering condition and it is shown that in-plane damping is increased by means of CLD treatments.

  • Many kind of damping materials are generally used on concrete slab in apartment building to reduce floor impact noise level. Lately, multi-layered damping material that is consist of several materials are used to improve the effect of floor impact noise insulation. In this study, dynamic stiffness of multi-layered damping material that is consist of common materials such as expanded polystyrene(EPS), expended polyethylene(EPE), ethylene vinyl acetate(EVA) and polyester was investigated. It was found that dynamic stiffness of multi-layered damping material could be estimated if know value of each layer that compose whole structure. And it was found that dynamic stiffness of whole structure did not change even if change order that build layer.

  • Structural damping enhancement of composite flexures and aeroelastic stability of a hingeless rotor system are investigated. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments are applied in order to increase structural damping of flexures. Material damping property of viscoelastic layer is modelled as complex modulus. Modal analysis of composite flexures with attached viscoelastic layers and constraining layers are performed using MSC/NASTRAN and the effects of CLD treatments are verified with the modal test results. The composite flexures with CLD are applied to a 4-bladed, 2-meter diameter, Froude-scaled, soft-in-plane hingeless rotor system. The aeroelastic stability is tested at hovering condition and the effects of CLD are investigated. It is shown that the CLD treatment effectively enhance the aeroelastic stability at hover.

  • In order to investigate the effects of layer-wise in-plane displacements on vibration and damping characteristics of composite laminated plates, the finite element method based on the generalized laminated plate theory(GLPT) has been formulated. Specific damping capacity of each mode was obtained by modal strain energy method. To see the effect of transverse shear on deformation, the strain energy of stress components was computed. The accuracy of this study was examined for the cylindrical bending vibration of cross-ply plate strip. The results were very accurate compared with 3-D solutions. The numerical results show that through-thickness variation of in-plane displacements has not so much influence on the natural frequency, but has a great influence on the damping of composite plates, especially on the damping of thick composite plates since the damping is affected by local behavior while the natural frequency is affected by global behavior.

  • This paper deals with the effect of ply orientation and control gain on tip transverse displacement of functionally graded beam layer for both active constrained layer damping (ACLD) and passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) system. The functionally graded beam is taken as host beam with a bonded viscoelastic layer in ACLD beam system. Piezoelectric fiber reinforced composite (PFRC) laminate is a constraining layer which acts as actuator through the velocity feedback control system. A finite element model has been developed to study actuation of the smart beam system. Fractional order derivative constitutive model is used for the viscoelastic constitutive equation. The control voltage required for ACLD treatment for various symmetric ply stacking sequences is highest in case of longitudinal orientation of fibers of PFRC laminate over other ply stacking sequences. Performance of symmetric and anti-symmetric ply laminates on damping characteristics has been investigated for smart beam system using time and frequency response plots. Symmetric and anti-symmetric ply laminates significantly reduce the amplitude of the vibration over the longitudinal orientation of fibers of PFRC laminate. The analysis reveals that the PFRC laminate can be used effectively for developing very light weight smart structures.

  • This paper presents Newtonian formulation of the dynamics of plates treated fully with Active Constrained Layer Damping (ACLD). The developed equations of the plate/ACLD system provide analytical models far predicting the dynamic of laminated plates subjected to passive and active vibration damping controls. Numerical solutions of the analytical models are presented fir simply-supported plates in order to study the performance of the plate/ACLD system for different control strategies. The developed models present invaluable means for designing and predicting the performance of the smart laminated plates that can be used in many critical engineering applications.
