  • Viscous dampers have been utilized as bearings and STU`s (Shock Transmission Unit) in earthquake resistant designs for bridges. Some viscous dampers are used as energy dissipators on one hand, but some dampers such as STU`s are used as fixing devices during an earthquake on the other hand. This paper discusses the effect of viscous dampers on the response of bridge with respect to the magnitude of damping coefficients. For this purpose, a typical bridge was taken as an example, and time-history dynamic analysis have been carried out. The input seismic data used in the analyses are relevant to the response spectra in the Koreans design code. The results show that there is an optimum value of coefficient considered most effective in the design. A STU with a large value of coefficient seems to make its support fixed. The response of the bridge is not much sensitive to the variation of the damping coefficients.

  • A linear acoustic analysis has been performed to elucidate damping characteristics of acoustic cavities in a liquid rocket combustor. Results have shown that resonant frequencies of acoustic cavity obtained by classical theoretic approach and by the present linear analysis are somewhat different with each other. This difference is attributed to the limitation of the simplified classical theory. To quantify the damping characteristics, acoustic impedance has been introduced and resultant absorption coefficient and conductance have been evaluated. Satisfactory agreement has been achieved with previous experiment. Finally the design procedure for an optimal tuning of acoustic cavity has been established.

  • In general, crankshafts which are used in internal combustion reciprocating engines are subjects to high torsional vibration. Therefore, a damper is often used to minimize the torsional vibration in reciprocating engines. In this paper, in order to investigate damping performance of viscous damper, the real effective viscosity and complex damping coefficient of silicone oil, and the effective inertia moment of inertia ring are calculated considering the relative motion between damper casing and inertia ring. Based on these results multi-cylinder shaft is modeled into equivalent 2-degree of freedom system and optimum condition is estimated by calculating the amplification factor of viscous damper. Also the test damper was manufactured according to the result of theoretical investigation, the performance and durability was ascertained through experimental examination.

  • This study predicts the modified eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the damped structure due to the change in the mass, damping and stiffness of structure by calculation of the sensitivity coefficient using the original dynamic characteristic. The method is applied to examples of the damped 3 degree of freedom system by modifing the mass, damping and stiffness. The predicted dynamic characteristics are in good agreement with these from the structural reanalysis using the modified mass, damping and stiffness.

  • A method based on derivatives of eigen-parameters is presented for damage detection in discrete systems with dampers. The damage is simulated by decrease on the stiffness coefficient and increase of the damping coefficient. In the forward analysis, the derivatives of eigen-parameters are derived for the discrete system. In the inverse analysis, a derivative of eigen-parameters based model updating approach is used to identify damages in frequency domain. Two numerical examples are investigated to illustrate efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method. Studies in this paper indicate that the proposed method is efficient and robust for both single and multiple damages and is insensitive to measurement noise. And satisfactory identified results can be obtained from few numbers of iterations.

  • A new mechanical model for predicting the vibration of a pipe pile embedded in longitudinally layered visco-elastic media with radial inhomogeneity is proposed by extending Novak's plain-strain model and complex stiffness method to consider viscous-type damping. The analytical solutions for the dynamic impedance, the velocity admittance and the reflected signal of wave velocity at the pile head are also derived and subsequently verified by comparison with existing solutions. An extensive parametric analysis is further performed to examine the effects of shear modulus, viscous damping coefficient, coefficient of disturbance degree, weakening or strengthening range of surrounding soil and longitudinal soft or hard interbedded layer on the velocity admittance and the reflected signal of wave velocity at the pile head. It is demonstrated that the proposed model and the obtained solutions provide extensive possibilities for practical application compared with previous related studies.

  • Passive control may not provide enough damping for a stay cable since the control devices are often restricted to a low location level. In order to enhance control performance of conventional passive dampers, a new type of damper integrated with a rotary electromagnetic damper providing variable damping force and a flywheel serving as an inertial mass, called the rotary electromagnetic inertial mass damper (REIMD), is presented for suppressing the cable vibrations in this paper. The mechanical model of the REIMD is theoretically derived according to generation mechanisms of the damping force and the inertial force, and further validated by performance tests. General dynamic characteristics of an idealized taut cable with a REIMD installed close to the cable end are theoretically investigated, and parametric analysis are then conducted to investigate the effects of inertial mass and damping coefficient on vibration control performance. Finally, vibration control tests on a scaled cable model with a REIMD are performed to further verify mitigation performance through the first two modal additional damping ratios of the cable. Both the theoretical and experimental results show that control performance of the cable with the REIMD are much better than those of conventional passive viscous dampers, which mainly attributes to the increment of the damper displacement due to the inertial mass induced negative stiffness effects of the REIMD. Moreover, it is concluded that both inertial mass and damping coefficient of an optimum REIMD will decrease with the increase of the mode order of the cable, and oversize inertial mass may lead to negative effect on the control performance.

  • In this work, the mechanism of damping and its theoretical evaluation for layered aluminium cantilever structures jointed with a number of equispaced connecting bolts under an equal tightening torque have been considered. Extensive experiments have been conducted on a number of specimens for comparison with numerical results. Intensity of interface pressure, its distribution pattern, dynamic slip ratio and kinematic coefficient of friction at the interfaces, relative spacing of the connecting bolts, frequency and amplitude of excitation are found to play a major role on the damping capacity of such structures. It is established that the damping capacity of structures jointed with connecting bolts can be improved largely with an increase in number of layers maintaining uniform intensity of pressure distribution at the interfaces. Thus the above principle can be utilized in practice for construction of aircraft and aerospace structures effectively in order to improve their damping capacity which is one of the prime considerations for their design.

  • Nonlinear vibration of the CRT shadow mask with impact damping wires is analyzed in consideration of the mask tension distribution and the effect of wire impact damping. A reduced order FEM model of the shadow mask is obtained from dynamic condensation of the mass and stiffness matrices, and damping wire is modeled using the lumped parameter method to effectively describe its contact interactions with the shadow mask. The nonlinear contact-impact model is composed of spring and damper elements, of which parameters are determined from the Hertzian contact theory and the restitution coefficient, respectively. The analysis model of the shadow mask with damping wires is experimentally verified through impact tests of shadow masks performed in a vacuum chamber.

  • The purpose of superconducting magnetic bearing flywheel energy storage system(SMB-FESS) is to store unused nighttime electricity as kinetic energy and convert it to electricity during daytime. The SMB-FESS is proposed as an efficient energy storage system because there is no mechanical problems, such as friction and wear The flywheel over SMB is rotated at a high speed, 50,000rpm. The major source of energy loss in the SMB-FESS is vibration of flywheel. Therefore, the vibration characteristics of SMB-FESS should be identified. In this study, the axial/radial stiffness and damping coefficient of SMB are measured by a vibration test. Natural frequencies and natural modes of flywheel and magnet are analyzed by a finite element method. The modal analysis of system is performed using the modal parameters of each component and the measured stiffness/damping coefficient. So, natural at frequencies and mode shapes of the joined system can be obtained. According to critical speed analysis, the system has two rigid conical modes in the low speed range. Nevertheless, the system has not been affected by the critical speed in the main operating range.
