This study examines the two-level behavior of the toggle brace damper within a steel frame having a yielding pipe damper and rotational friction damper. The proposed system has two kinds of fuse for energy dissipation in two stages. In this mechanism, rotational friction damper rather than hinged connection is used in toggle brace system, connected to a pipe damper with a limited gap. In order to create a gap, bolted connection with the slotted hole is used, such that first a specific movement of the rotational friction damper solely is engaged but with an increase in movement, the yielding damper is also involved. The performance of the system is such that at the beginning of loading the rotational friction damper, as the first fuse, absorbs energy and with increasing the input load and further movement of the frame, yielding damper as the second fuse, along with rotational friction damper would dissipate the input energy. The models created by ABAQUS are subjected to cyclic and seismic loading. Considering the results obtained, the flexibility of the hybrid two-level system is more comparable to the conventional toggle brace damper. Moreover, this system sustains longer lateral displacements. The energy dissipation of these two systems is modeled in multi-story frames in SAP2000 software and their performance is analyzed using time-history analysis. According to the results, permanent relocations of the roof in the two-level system, in comparison with toggle brace damper system in 2, 5, and 8-story building frames, in average, decrease by 15, 55, and 37% respectively. This amount in a 5-story building frame under the earthquakes with one-third scale decreases by 64%.

Continuously variable damper can yield diverse damping forces for a single damping velocity. It is widely used in the semi-active suspension system since, with right control logics, it can enhance ride comfort compared to the passive damper while not degrading driving safety. A key to the successful design of the continuously variable damper is the knowledge of its complex and nonlinear characteristics. In this paper, research has been done for analyzing characteristics of the continuously variable damper. Various damper components have been investigated and their effects upon the force-velocity characteristics of the damper have been examined. The effects of the damper characteristics change upon ride comfort and driving safety have also been investigated by numerical simulations.

This paper presents design and performance evaluation of magnetorheological(MR) damper for integrated isolation mount. The MR damper needs two functions for the integrated isolation mount. The one is vibration absorption and the other is isolation of vibration transmission. For vibration absorption, the MR damper requires wide damping force range. And for isolation of vibration transmission, the friction of MR damper needs to be eliminated. In order to achieve this goal, a novel type of MR damper is originally designed in this work. Subsequently, the MR damper is mathematically modeled and its damping force characteristics are evaluated. In addition, the vibration control performance of the MR damper associated with the stage mass is evaluated. From the result, this paper evaluates the performance of MR damper for integrated isolation mount.

An Amplitude Proportional Friction Damper (APFD) system is considered in order to improve the stick-slip characteristics of Coulomb friction damper. The frictional force is proportional to the amplitude in APFD system and the system is non-linear as is Coulomb damper system. The free vibration analysis on an 1-DOF system has conducted to demonstrate the characteristics of the APFD system and the results show that the APFD system has similar damping characteristics to the viscous damper system. It is concluded that the APFD system may become a cost effective substitution for the viscous damper and it also has certain advantages over Coulomb damper system since the APFD system can be designed to work with no stick-slip.

In this study, seismic response mitigation effect of an MR damper generating response-dependent frictional force is investigated. It has been reported in previous studies that passively operated MR damper with constant input current doesn't show better control performance than semi-active MR damper with varying input current calculated by control algorithms such as linear quadratic regulator and sliding mode control. However, in order to operate the MR damper semi-actively, other control systems besides the damper itself such as sensors for measuring structural responses and controller for calculating optimal input current are necessary, which deteriorate the economical efficiency. This study presents a MR damper generating frictional force of which magnitude is controlled in accordance to the displacement and velocity transferred to the damper. Numerical analyses results indicate that the performance of the response dependent MR damper is closely related with the range of the friction force and it can be designed to short better control performance than the passive MR damper.

Recently, steel dampers are widely used as seismic reinforcement devices. Steel dampers have the advantage of being easy to manufacture and being able to absorb a lot of energy through stable hysteresis behavior. However, there is a possibility that the steel damper may be damaged due to fatigue caused by repeated seismic loads. In this study, the seismic performance of steel dampers and engineering plastic dampers with different physical characteristics were compared and analyzed. In addition, numerical analysis was performed on a hybrid damper that combines a steel damper and an engineering plastic damper. It is more effective to apply engineering plastic dampers to structures that experience significant displacement due to seismic loads. The behavior of hybrid dampers combining steel dampers and engineering plastic dampers is dominated by steel dampers. A hybrid damper in which an engineering plastic damper yields after a steel damper yields can effectively respond to various seismic loads and secure high ductility and excellent seismic performance.

This paper presents the results of experimental studies of the mechanical characteristics of the Coil Spring and Viscous Damper system. The Coil Spring and Viscous Damper systems were selected for the isolation of Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) which is located in Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). The Coil Spring and Viscous Damper systems were developed for the operating vibration isolation and seismic isolation for scaled Model EDG System. The damping properties of the viscous damper changes as the variation of velocity. Through this research nonlinear damping characteristics and the effective stiffness of coil spring and viscous damper system were evaluated.
This paper presents a systematic design and training procedure for the feed-forward back-propagation neural network (NN) modeling of both forward and inverse behavior of a rotary magnetorheological (MR) damper based on experimental data. For the forward damper model, with damper force as output, an optimization procedure demonstrates accurate training of the NN architecture with only current and velocity as input states. For the inverse damper model, with current as output, the absolute value of velocity and force are used as input states to avoid negative current spikes when tracking a desired damper force. The forward and inverse damper models are trained and validated experimentally, combining a limited number of harmonic displacement records, and constant and half-sinusoidal current records. In general the validation shows accurate results for both forward and inverse damper models, where the observed modeling errors for the inverse model can be related to knocking effects in the measured force due to the bearing plays between hydraulic piston and MR damper rod. Finally, the validated models are used to emulate pure viscous damping. Comparison of numerical and experimental results demonstrates good agreement in the post-yield region of the MR damper, while the main error of the inverse NN occurs in the pre-yield region where the inverse NN overestimates the current to track the desired viscous force.
This paper presents a numerical study to develop a guideline for estimating the plastic strength of elliptical steel slit damper with reasonable accuracy. The strut width increases from middle to end in elliptical steel slit damper and it is observed from the past studies that variation of the width is not considered for calculating the plastic strength of the damper. It is also noticed that the existing formulas for predicting plastic strength of this kind of damper may not be accurate and further refinement is warranted. Study is then carried on elliptical steel slit damper made of mild steel and having different geometry to find out equivalency of it with oblong steel slit damper having similar plastic strength. A few three-dimensional finite element models of seismic moment connection system with steel slit damper are developed and validated against past experiments for carrying the present study considering both the material nonlinearity as well as geometric nonlinearity. The results of the parametric studies have been compared with energy quantities and presented graphically to better understand the effects of different parameters on the system. Based on the pattern of parametric study results, closed-form semi-empirical algebraic expression of damper plastic strength is developed for elliptical steel slit damper which shows very good agreement with finite element analysis as well as experiments. This developed expression can now be used for elliptical steel slit damper in replacement with any type of damper in the design of moment connection.

An Amplitude Proportional Friction Damper (APFD), in which the friction force is proportional to the system displacement, has been introduced and mathematically modeled. To understand the damping characteristics of APFD, analytical solutions for the impulse response has been derivedand compared to the viscous damper. It is found that APFD system has very similar damping characteristics to viscous damper even though it is a friction damper. APFD may be used as a cost-effective substitution for the viscous damper and could also be used to improve the simple friction or Coulomb dampersince APFD works with no stick-slip and always returns to original position when external disturbance is disappeared.
