  • Reduction factor for installation damage required to calculate design strength of geogrid used in MSEW(mechanically stabilized earth wall) design is usually obtained in the field test simulating real construction condition. However, damages occurred in geogrid during backfill work are influenced by many factors such as polymer types, unit weight per area, backfill construction method and gradation of backfill material and field test considering these factors demand lots of time and costs. In this study, factors affecting installation damage are analyzed and empirical method to evaluate reduction factor for installation damage using maximum particle size in backfill material is suggested.

  • The factors affecting the long-term design strength of geogrid for railroad reinforcement can be classified into factors on creep deformation, installation damage, temperature, chemical degradation, biological degradation. Especially, creep deformation and installation damage are considered as main factors to determine the long-term design strength of geogrid. This paper describes the results of a series of experimental study, which are carried out to assess the combined effect of installation damage and creep deformation for the long-term design strength of geogrid reinforcement. In this study, a series of field tests are carried out to assess installation damage of a various geogrids according to different fill materials, and then creep tests are conducted to assess the creep properties of both undamaged and damaged geogrids.

Classification of the Types of Damage by Extracting the Changed Areas on Land Cover Maps (토지피복지도 변화지역 추출을 통한 훼손 유형분류에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to increase the ability to adapt to the ecosystem and promote a sustainable use of the natural environment, by classifying the types of damaged lands according to various factors, such as the characteristics of the target area and form, cause, and impact of damage. Moreover, the study suggests the development of evaluation categories and criteria by each type. The results obtained are as follows: first, for the assessment of damaged lands, the changed areas were identified utilizing land cover maps. Video analysis was performed to increase the accuracy, and 88 sites were obtained. Second, the types of damage were classified into ecological infrastructure and ecological environment, and the sub-factors of the cause of damage were classified into 12 factors. Third, each evaluation system for the types of damage was composed of four steps, considering each type of damage and the level of evaluators being higher than paraprofessionals. To supplement this study, it will be necessary to utilize the database of damaged lands other than the Seoul Metropolitan Area and conduct an on-site survey for verification in the future.

  • The factors affecting the long-term design strength of geogrids can be classified into factors on creep deformation, installation damage, temperature, chemical degradation, biological degradation. Especially, creep deformation and installation damage are considered as main factors to determine the long-term design strength of geogrids. This paper describes the results of a series of experimental investigation, which were conducted to assess the installation damage according to different fill materials and creep characteristic of various geogrids. The results of this study show that the installation damage and creep deformation of geogrids significantly depends on a row material and a manufacturing process of geogrids.

  • In the present work, the evolution rules for the internal variables including continuum damage factors are obtained using the thermodynamic framework, which are in turn facilitated to derive the elastic-plastic constitutive relation for the particulate composites. Using the Mori-Tanaka scheme, the homogenization on state and internal variables such as back-stress and damage factors is carried out to procure the rate independent plasticity relations. Moreover, the degradation of mechanical properties of constituents is depicted by the distinctive damages such that the phase and interfacial damages are treated individually accordingly, whereas the kinematic hardening is depicted by combining the Armstrong-Frederick and Phillips' back-stress evolutions. On the other hand, the present constitutive relation for each phase is expressed in terms of the respective damage-free effective quantities, then, followed by transformation into the damage affected overall nominal relations using the aforementioned homogenization concentration factors. An emphasis is placed on the qualitative analyses for strain localization by observing the perturbation growth instead of the conventional bifurcation analyses. It turns out that the proposed constitutive model offers a wide range of strain localization behavior depending on the evolution of various internal variable descriptions.

  • This study aimed to classify damaged lands, to find what are the damage factors affecting the studied area, and to present a prescription in order to provide some benefit for the restoration of Regional Ecological Network at Chungnam province. Finally we classified damaged lands from 1st to 4th damaged lands according to relative intensity of damage. The main damage factors for the First Damage Lands were humus horizon, soil hardness and plant species richness. In the Second Damage Lands, those were soil hardness, plant species richness, number of plants and dominant plant species. In the Third Damage Lands, those were humus horizon, soil hardness, plant species richness, number of plants and dominant plant species. In the Fourth Damage Lands, those were humus horizon, organic matter, soil hardness, EC, T-N content, plant species richness, number of plants and dominant plant species. In every cases, the damage of soil and vegetation was originated due to development carried out by human being. The changes in soil condition were not big enough for it to affect plant growth, however, degradation of vegetation was still severe.

  • This study investigated the long-term measures to minimize flood damage in the event of flooding in urban areas. The relationship between urban spatial factors and the impact of flood damage was analyzed, focusing on non-structural measures. The urban spatial factors were categorized into three parts: open space, disaster prevention facilities, and urbanization sectors. Multiple regression analysis was used to investigate how urban spatial factors influence flood damage. As a result of the analysis, the crucial factors, such as the reduced green areas and parks included in the open space sectors, resulted in an increased flood damage potential. The posterior factors, such as the population density and GRDP included in the urbanization sector concurrently led to an increase in the flood damage potential. Therefore, to better adapt to climate change, it is necessary to establish urban spatial plans strategically, such as green areas and parks. Meanwhile, the population density and GRDP are also the main factors causing flood damage. Therefore, when used appropriately in terms of resilience, it will serve as adaptations and recovery.

Content Analysis of Main National Environmental Dispute Cases from Five Recent Years (최근 5년간 주요 중앙환경분쟁조정 사건의 내용 분석)

  • In this study, we analyzed the content and compensation factors of 337 cases of national environmental disputes from five recent years (2000~2014). Causes of damage were noise-vibration in 234 cases (69%), sunlight in 48 cases (14%), air pollution in 19 cases (6%), water pollution in 15 cases (4%), odor in 13 cases (4%), and others factors in 8 cases (3%). Sources of damage were construction in 224 cases (66%), structures in 36 cases (11%), vehicle on road in 31 cases (9%), industry in 18 cases (5%), environmental facility in 11 cases (3%), livestock facility in 6 cases (2%), and other sources in 11 cases (3%). From the results of logistic regression analysis, important factors associated with compensation were found to be damage amount, damage distance, zoning districts, source, and administrative disposition.

On the Linkage Between Irrigation Facilities and Rice Production Under Drought Events (가뭄사상 및 농업수리시설물이 쌀 생산량에 미치는 영향에 대한 상관 분석)

  • Drought is a disaster that causes prolonged and wide scale damage. Recently, the severity and frequency of drought occurrences, and drought damage have been increased significantly due to climate change. As a result, a quantitative study of drought factors is needed to better understand and prevent future droughts. In the case of agricultural drought, several existing studies examine the economic damage caused by droughts and their causes, but these studies are not well suited to estimating crop-oriented agricultural drought damage and the factors that absolutely affect agricultural drought. This study determines which factors most affect agricultural drought. It examines meteorological factors and those related to agricultural water supplied by irrigation facilities. Rice paddy production per unit area is lower than the average from the last two years where agricultural drought occurred. We compare the relative frequency of agricultural drought impacts with irrigation facilities, effective reservoir storage, the number of water supply facilities, and the meteorological drought index such as Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). To identify factors that affect agricultural drought, we correlate rice paddy production anomalies with irrigation water supply for the past two years. There was a high positive correlation between rice paddy production and irrigation water usage, and there was a low or moderate negative correlation between rice paddy production anomalies compared to the average of the past two years and SPI. As a result, agricultural water supply by irrigation facilities was judged to be more influential than meteorological factors in rice paddy production. This study is expected to help local governments establish policies related to agricultural drought response.

Biotic and Abiotic Factors Affecting Homoharringtonine Contents of Cephalotaxus koreana Nakai (개비자나무의 homoharringtonine 함량에 영향을 미치는 생물 및 무생물적 환경인자)

  • This study was carried out to investigate abiotic and biotic environmental factors affecting homoharringtonine (HHT) contents of Cephalotaxus koreana, whereby, to provide basic information of high value-added industry production of HHT as a promising anti-cancer agent. For correlation between abiotic environmental factors (soil moisture, soil pH, habitat density and temperature) and HHT contents, the contents were highly correlated with soil moisture (0.77) and soil pH (-0.68). For multiple regression analysis of relationship between abiotic environmental factors (soil moisture and soil pH) and HHT contents, soil moisture appeared to be strongly affecting the contents relatively due to being significant at only its regression coefficient ($26.48^{***}$). For the effect of biotic environmental factors (damage index) affecting HHT contents, the contents was quadratic with equation of $H=278.23+1242D-398.87D^2$, also, damage index had strong effect on the contents. Finally, for the result of the most influencing an environmental factor on HHT contents, both damage index and soil moisture were suitable in second polynomial regression, also, damage index ($R^2=0.73^{***}$) was turned out to be more influencing factor than soil moisture ($R^2=0.67^{**}$) on HHT contents relatively. Therefore, we predict that HHT contents in the trees of Cephalotaxus koreana is produced as a chemical defense mechanism triggered by a stress-related damage of fungi or insects.
