  • Continuing progress in high technology has created numerous industrial applications for new advanced composite materials. Among these materials, carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminate composite is typically used for low-weight carrying structures that require high specific strength. In this study, the damage mechanism of a compact tension (CT) specimen of woven CFRP laminates is described in terms of strain and displacement changes and crack growth behavior. The digital image correlation (DIC) method (which is employed here as a computer vision technique) is analyzed. Acoustic emission (AE) characteristics are also acquired during fracture tests. The results demonstrate the usefulness of these methods in evaluating the damage mechanism for woven CFRP laminate composites. From the results, we show these methods are so useful in order to evaluate the damage mechanism for woven CFRP laminate composites.

  • In this work the surface damage mechanism of hard disk was investigated. Experiments were peformed to simulate the contact during start and stop. Evidence of significant surface damage appeared after 20,000 cycles. It was found that despite higher hardness, the slider showed more signs of damage than the disk. Optical microscopy showed that the surface was damaged by abrasive action as well as adhesion of wear debris.

  • Due to their intrinsic anisotropy, composite materials show quite complicated damage mechanism with their fiber orientation and stacking sequence and especially, their fatigue damage process is sequential occurrence of matrix cracking, delamination and fiber breakage. In the study, to propose new model capable of describing damage mechanism under fatigue loading, fatigue analysis of composite laminates based on damage mechanics, are performed. The average stress is disassembled with stress components of matrix, fiber and interlaminar interface through stress analysis. Each stress components are used to assess static damage analysis based on continuum damage mechanics (C.D.M.). Fatigue damage curves are obtained from hysteresis loop and assessed by the fatigue damage analysis. Then, static and fatigue damage analysis are combined. Expected results such as stress-cycle relation are verified by the experimental results of fatigue tests.

  • In this work, we investigate the toughening mechanism of the rubber-modified epoxy resin. The fracture toughness($K_{IC}$) is measured using CT specimens for three kinds of rubber-modified epoxy resin with different rubber content. The damage zone and rubber particles around a crack tip of a damaged specimen just before fracture are observed by a polarization microscope and an atomic force microscope(AFM). Both the fracture energy($G_{IC}$) and the size of damage zone increase with the rubber content below l5wt%. The size of the rubber particles can be qualitatively correlated with the $G_{IC}$ and the size of damage zone. The cavitation of the rubber particles inside the damage zone is observed, which is expected to be main toughening mechanism by rubber particles. the stress which causes the cavitation of rubber particles is estimated by the Dugdale model.

  • Low temperature associated damage mechanism is not well known for asphalt concrete. Many studies have related the thermal cracking of pavement in the roadway in cold region with overall shrinkage of the pavement surface under assumption of homogeneous material. This study, however, was intiated based on the assumption that thermal incompatibility of materials (heterogeneous) in asphalt concrete mixture would be the primary cause of the damages. Acoustic emission technique and microscopic obsevation were employed to evaluate damage mechanism of asphalt concrete due to low temperature. The first method showed the sufficient evidence that asphalt concrete could be damaged by lowered temperature only. The second method showed that the damage by temperature resulted in micro-cracks at the interface between asphalt matrix and aggregate particle. It was concluded that these damage mechanisms were the primary cause of major thermal cracking of asphalt pavement in cold region.

  • Non-stationary random seismic response and reliability of multi-degree of freedom hysteretic structure system are studied based on the cumulative damage failure mechanism. First, dynamic Eqs. of multi-degree of freedom hysteretic structure system under earthquake action are established. Secondly, the random seismic response of a multi-degree freedom hysteretic structure system is investigated by the combination of virtual excitation and precise integration. Finally, according to the damage state level of structural, the different damage state probability of high-rise frame structure is calculated based on the boundary value of the cumulative damage index in the seismic intensity earthquake area. The results show that under the same earthquake intensity and the same floor quality and stiffness, the lower the floor is, the greater the damage probability of the building structure is; if the structural floor stiffness changes abruptly, the weak layer will be formed, and the cumulative damage probability will be the largest, and the reliability index will be relatively small. Meanwhile, with the increase of fortification intensity, the reliability of three-level structure fortification is also significantly reduced. This method can solve the problem of non-stationary random seismic response and reliability of high-rise buildings, and it has high efficiency and practicability. It is instructive for structural performance design and estimating the age of the structure.

  • The mechanisms of benzene toxicity is not fully elucidated, although the metabolism of benzene is very well understood. In order to study the mechanism of benzene toxicity, we investigated DNA damage induced by benzene metabolite, 1,2,4-benzenetriol (BT) in HL-60 cells by alkaline comet assay. To investigate the mechanism of cellular DNA damage induced by BT, the cells were treated with antioxidant such as vitamin C, SOD, catalase, and chelating agent such as deferoxamine (DFO), bathocuproinedisulfonic acid (BCDS). BT induced DNA damage in dose-dependent manner at concentration between 10$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 100$\mu\textrm{m}$. The antioxidant vitamin C itself induced DNA damage at higher concentration. The DNA damage induced by BT in HL-60 cells was protected at low concentraiton of vitamin C whereas no protective effect was found at high concentration. In hibitory effect of SOD on DNA damage by BT was observed and this suggested that BT produce superoxide anion (O2-) causing DNA damage. Catalase protected BT-induced DNA damage suggesting that BT produce H2O2 during autooxidation of BT. Both Fe(II)-specific cheiating agent, deferoxamine (DFO) and Cu(I)-specific chelating agent, bathocuproinedisulfonic acid (BCDS) inhibited BT0induced DNA damage. This suggested that DNA damage was caused by active species which was produced DAN damage. This suggested that DNA damage was caused by active species which was produced by the autooxidation of BT in the presence of Cu(II) and Fe(III). These findings suggest that reactive oxygen species play an important role in the mechanism of toxicity induced by benzene metabolites.

  • During the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake, a reinforced concrete building, called Jeunesse Rokko, suffered intermediate damage by forming a beam-yielding (weak-beam strong-column) mechanism, which has been regarded as the most desirable earthquake resisting mechanism throughout the world. High cost to repair damage at many beam ends and poor appearance expected after the repair work made the owner decide to tear down the building. Nonlinear earthquake response analyses were conducted to simulate the behavior of the building during the earthquake. The influence of non-structural members was considered in the analysis. The calculated results were compared with the observed damage, especially the location of yield hinges and compression failure of spandrel beams, and the degree of cracking in columns and in column-girder connections.

  • A method for structural damage identification based on Chaotic Artificial Bee Colony (CABC) algorithm is presented. ABC is a heuristic algorithm with simple structure, ease of implementation, good robustness but with slow convergence rate. To overcome the shortcoming, the tournament selection mechanism is chosen instead of the roulette mechanism and chaotic search mechanism is also introduced. Residuals of natural frequencies and modal assurance criteria (MAC) are used to establish the objective function, ABC and CABC are utilized to solve the optimization problem. Two numerical examples are studied to investigate the efficiency and correctness of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the CABC algorithm can identify the local damage better compared with ABC and other evolutionary algorithms, even with noise corruption.

  • In this paper, an innovative procedure is proposed for the seismic design of reinforced concrete frame structures. The main contribution of the proposed procedure is to minimize the construction cost, considering the uniform damage distribution over the height of structure due to earthquake excitations. As such, this procedure is structured in the framework of an optimization problem, and the initial construction cost is chosen as the objective function. The aim of uniform damage distribution is reached through a design constraint in the optimization problem. Since this aim requires defining allowable degree of damage, a damage pattern based on the concept of global collapse mechanism is presented. To show the efficiency of the proposed procedure, the uniform damage-based optimum seismic design is compared with two other seismic design procedures, which are the strength-based optimum seismic design and the damage-based optimum seismic design. By using the three different seismic design methods, three reinforced concrete frames including six-, nine-, and twelve-story with three bays are designed optimally under a same artificial earthquake. Then, to show the effects of the uniform damage distribution, all three optimized frames are used for seismic damage analysis under a suite of earthquake records. The results show that the uniform damage-based optimum seismic design method renders a design that will suffer less damage under severe earthquakes.
