The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of acetaminophen on feed intake and growth performance of Hanwoo steers in the summer. Eight steers participated in a twelve-week experiment. The steers were randomly assigned into one of two treatments: Control and acetaminophen supplementation. Commercial acetaminophen was top-dressed to a concentrate mix at a rate of 3 g/kg based on dry matter. Individual feed intake was measured daily during the entire period of the experiment, and the intake of forage and concentrate diet were measured separately. The body weight of the steers were measured every 4 weeks. During the experimental period, ambient temperatures were recorded using an automatic temperature and humidity recorder. Acetaminophen had no effect (p > 0.05) on body weight, average daily gain, dry matter intake (DMI) and feed conversion ratio. Numerically, total DMI and concentrate DMI in the acetaminophen treated group were 5.7% and 7.6% lower than those of the control group, respectively, and the daily gain was 9.7% higher. As a result, the feed conversion rate of the acetaminophen treated group improved by 17% compared to the control; however, it was not statistically significant (p = 0.237). The results of this study suggest that acetaminophen supplementation may reduce the feed conversion ratio of Hanwoo steers under high temperature stress. However, further studies are needed to confirm the optimal level of acetaminophen supplementation which has a significant effect on the intake and weight gain of Hanwoo steers in the summer.

This study focusses on how the skirt or slacks wearing habit affects the female physiology in her daily life. The healthy female college students have been trained to wear either skirt (group A) or slacks (group B) from late August to early January in order to study the effects of clothing habit on thermoregulatory responses. Also, the themoregulatory responses have been compared the healthy students groups with a physical trained students group (group C) to examine the effects of clothing habit. The changes in body temperatures of students have been studied under the cool environmental condition (15$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, 60$\pm$5% RH, 0.25 m/sec). The results were as follows: 1. Rectal temperature of the group A was 0.4$^{\circ}C$ lower at 36.9$^{\circ}C$ than that of the group B The groups A and B were found identical before the training, while the groups A and C were identical after the training. 2. Mean skin temperature of the group A was 1.2$^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the group B. The groups A and C were identical after the training. 3. The thermal sensation was reflected to be cool by the group A and to be cold by the group B. As for the humidity sensation, the group A felt average, whereas the group B reported between average and slightly humid. In the case of comfort sensation, the group A felt average, while the group B felt between average and slightly uncomfortable. In summary, the 18 weeks of training has provided the skirt group an improved acclimatization to the cold environment . This group also showed an insulative-hypothermic adapta lion in a cold ambient temperature, as was the case for the physical trained group. It is concluded that wearing a skirt for a long period of time can be helpful to human body through gaining of thermoregulatory abilities.

Objectives: Many studies have explored the relationship between short-term weather and its health effects (including pneumonia) based on mortality, although both morbidity and mortality pose a substantial burden. In this study, the authors aimed to describe the influence of meteorological factors on the number of emergency room (ER) visits due to pneumonia in Seoul, Korea. Methods: Daily records of ER visits for pneumonia over a 6-year period (2009-2014) were collected from the National Emergency Department Information System. Corresponding meteorological data were obtained from the National Climate Data Service System. A generalized additive model was used to analyze the effects. The percent change in the relative risk of certain meteorological variables, including pneumonia temperature (defined as the change in average temperature from one day to the next), were estimated for specific age groups. Results: A total of 217 776 ER visits for pneumonia were identified. The additional risk associated with a $1^{\circ}C$ increase in pneumonia temperature above the threshold of $6^{\circ}C$ was 1.89 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.37 to 2.61). Average temperature and diurnal temperature range, representing within-day temperature variance, showed protective effects of 0.07 (95% CI, 0.92 to 0.93) and 0.04 (95% CI, 0.94 to 0.98), respectively. However, in the elderly (65+ years), the effect of pneumonia temperature was inconclusive, and the directionality of the effects of average temperature and diurnal temperature range differed. Conclusions: The term 'pneumonia temperature' is valid. Pneumonia temperature was associated with an increased risk of ER visits for pneumonia, while warm average temperatures and large diurnal temperature ranges showed protective effects.
In 2018, severe diebacks have occurred on yuzu trees cultivated in Goheung, Jeonnam Province. On-farm surveys at 18 randomly selected orchards revealed the dieback incidence ranged from 7.5% to 100% with an average of 43.6%, and 56.6% of the affected yuzu trees were eventually killed. In order to find the reason for this sudden epidemic, we investigated the weather conditions that are exclusively distinct from previous years, hypothesizing that certain weather extremes might have caused the dieback epidemic on yuzu trees. Since different temperatures can cause freeze damage to plants depending on their dormancy stages, we investigated both periods when yuzu becomes hardy under deep dormancy (January-February) and when yuzu loses its cold hardiness (March-April). First, we found that daily minimum air temperatures below $-10^{\circ}C$ were recorded for 7 days in Goheung for January and February in 2018, while no occasions in 2017. In particular, there were two extreme temperature drops ($-12.6^{\circ}C$ and $-11.5^{\circ}C$) beyond the yuzu cold hardiness limit in 2018. In addition, another occasion of two sudden temperature drops to nearly $0^{\circ}C$ were occurred right after abnormally-warm-temperature-rises to $13^{\circ}C$ of daily minimum air temperatures in mid-March and early April. In conclusion, we estimated that the possible damages by several extreme freeze events during the winter of 2018 could be a major cause of severe diebacks and subsequently killed the severely affected yuzu trees.
Changes of oxygen consumption of Nile tilapia in relation to different body sizes(average body weight 4 g, 40 g, 120 g and 400 g) and water temperatures ($20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$) were investigated by a continuous oxygen monitoring system. Mean oxygen consumption of 4 g, 40 g, 120 g and 400 g Nile tilapia at $20^{\circ}C$ were 318.8, 214.9, 84.1 and 69.4 mg $O_2$/kg fish/hr and that at $25^{\circ}C$ were 435.2, 345.9, 151.5 and 115.9 mg $O_2$/kg fish/hr, and that at $30^{\circ}C$ were 611.1, 538.4, 320.8, and 236.0 mg $O_2$/kg fish/hr, respectively. Oxygen consumption per unit body weight tended to decrease exponentially at all temperatures (P<0.05) as body weigth of the fish increased. Oxygen consumption of this fish at $25^{\circ}C$ was $1.61\pm0.18$ times higher than that at $20^{\circ}C$ and oxygen consumption at $30^{\circ}C$ was $1.53\pm0.27$ times higher than that at $25^{\circ}C$. Oxygen consumption per unit body weight linearly increased with the water temperature increased. Also, oxygen consumption of this fish during day time was higher than that during night time at 12L:12D day light condition. The differences between maximum and minimum daily oxygen consumption of this fish increased with the water temperature increased.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of multiple cooling systems and different drinking water temperatures (DWT) on the performance of sows and their hair cortisol levels during heat stress. In this study, the effect of four different cooling systems: air conditioner (AC), cooling pad (CP), snout cooling (SC), and mist spray (MS), and two DWT, namely low water temperature (LWT) and high water temperature (HWT) on 48 multiparous sows (Landrace × Yorkshire; 242.84 ± 2.89 kg) was tested. The experiment is based on the use of eight replicas during a 21-days test. Different behaviors were recorded under different cooling treatments in sows. As a result, behaviors such as drinking, standing, and position change were found to be lower in sows under the AC and CP treatments than in those under the SC and MS treatments. Lying behavior increased under the AC and CP systems as compared with that under the SC and MS, systems. The average daily feed intake (ADFI) in sows and weight at weaning in piglets was higher under the AC, CP, and LWT treatments than under the SC, MS and HWT treatments. Sows subjected to SC and MS treatment showed higher hair cortisol levels, rectal temperature, and respiratory rate during lactation than those under AC and CP treatments. Hair cortisol levels, rectal temperature, and respiratory rate were also higher under the HWT than under the LWT treatment. As per the results of this study, the LWT has no significant effect on any of the behavioral factors. Taken together, the use of AC and CP cooling treatment is highly recommended to improve the behavior and to reduce the stress levels in lactating sows.

To improve the accuracy of frost warning system for pear orchard in a complex terrain in Naju area, the daily minimum temperature forecasted by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) was interpolated using a regional climate model based on topoclimatic estimation and optimum scale interpolation from 2004 to 2005. Based on the validation experiments done for three pear orchards in the spring of 2004, the results showed a good agreement between the observed and predicted values, resulting in improved predictability compared to the forecast from Korea Meteorological Administration. The differences between the observed and the predicted temperatures were $-2.1{\sim}2.7^{\circ}C$ (on average $-0.4^{\circ}C$) in the valley, $-1.6{\sim}2.7^{\circ}C$ (on average $-0.4^{\circ}C$) in the riverside and $-1.1{\sim}3.5^{\circ}C$ (on average $0.6^{\circ}C$) in the hills. Notably, the errors have been reduced significantly for the valley and riverside areas that are more affected by the cold air drainage and more susceptible to frost damage than hills.
Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) is relatively sensitive to temperature and light conditions. For year round production of good quality potted plants and energy saving, it is necessary to understand the growth and flowering response to the combined conditions of these environmental factors. This study was conducted to examine the growth and flowering responses to temperature, photoperiod, and light intensity during the post-seedling stage. 'El Paso Deep Blue' lisianthus plants with four true leaf pairs were grown in growth chambers maintained at average daily temperatures (ADT) of 14, 20, and $26^{\circ}C$ and provided with three photosynthetic photon fluxes [PPF; 100, 200, and $400{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$] for 8 (08:00-16:00) and 16 hours (08:00-24:00) by fluorescent and incandescent lamps, resulting in four daily light integrals (DLI): about 3, 6 (two photoperiods), 12 (two photoperiods), and $24mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. After treatment for three weeks followed by growth for one week in a greenhouse of $20{\pm}3^{\circ}C$, growth and development were measured. Higher temperature, higher PPF, and longer photoperiod promoted plant growth and flowering; however the impacts of PPF and photoperiod were smaller than those of temperature. As ADT and DLI increased, the number of leaves, number of flowers, lateral shoot length, and shoot dry weight increased. An increase of about $1mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ DLI could constitute an increase of 0.40 to $0.76^{\circ}C$ ADT depending on these crop characteristics when ADT and DLI are above $20^{\circ}C$ and $12mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, respectively. Therefore, growers can select a regimen of heating or supplemental lighting without delaying harvesting time or decreasing crop quality.
Background: This study was aimed at evaluating the growth, yield, and carbohydrate content in the whole Allium hookeri plant with shading treatment in hot summer. Methods and Results: Different shading rate, including 0 (control), 35 or 55%, was employed from the June $21^{st}$ to August $31^{st}$. Daily average air and soil temperature, which were approximately $2.5^{\circ}C$ and $3.8^{\circ}C$ lower, respectively, were observed with both 35% and 55% treatments in July and August, with no significant difference in daily maximum air temperature. Dry weights were high, approximately 40% and 48% for the shoot and 20% and 12% for the root, with the 35% and 55% treatments, respectively, 8 weeks after shading. Division number was increased by 13% and 19.8% with the 35% and 55% treatments, respectively. The mortality rates of 150 plants were 9.1%, 4.0%, and 1.3% with the 0 (control), 35% and 55% treatments, respectively. At 4 weeks after shading, the highest and lowest sucrose levels in both shoot and root were observed with the 35% and 55% treatments, respectively. At 8 weeks after shading, there was no significant difference in the sucrose content in the shoot among the treatments. Conclusions: The highest plant growth rate and yield with the 55% treatment may be related with the decrease in both air and soil temperatures, resulting in reducted leaf respiration and thus compensate net photosynthesis.
Objectives : This study investigates the association between weather conditions and the rate of no-shows at an academic medical center. Methods : Electronic data regarding medical appointments atover the course ofone academic year (2016.03~2017.02) were used for analysis. Characteristics of weather conditions and the daily number of no-shows were compared by Chi-square test. A logistic regression was run to determine if certain aspects of weather affected the rate of no-shows. Results : The results reveal an overall no-show rate of 6.8% that appears to vary in accordance with specific weather conditions. Lower average temperatures, in particular, corresponded with a higher rate of no-show patients. This may indicate that o-show rates in autumn and winter can be expected to exceed those during spring. Conclusions : This study investigates the association between no-show patients and weather conditions, and offers suggestions for augmenting this loss. One recommendation is to begin conducting investigations nationwide in order to provide more useful information.
