  • Arc fault detector based on multilevel DWT with analysis of high-frequency noise components over 100 kHz is proposed in this study to improve the performance in detecting serial arcs and distinguishing them from inverter noise in PV systems. PV inverters generally operate at a frequency range of 20-50 kHz for switching operation and maximum power tracking control, and the effect of these frequency components on the signal for arc detection leads to negative arc detection. High-speed ADC and multilevel DWT are used in this study to analyze frequency components above 100 kHz. Such high frequency components are less influenced by inverter noise and utilized to detect as well as separate DC series arc from inverter noise. Arc detectors identify the input current of PV inverters using a Rogowski coil. The sensed signal is filtered, amplified, and used in 800kSPS ADC and DWT analysis and arc occurrence determination in DSP. An arc detection simulation facility in UL1699B was constructed and AFD tests the proposed detector were conducted to verify the performance of arc detection and performance of distinction of the negative arc. The satisfactory performance of the arc detector meets the standard of arc detection and extinguishing time of UL1699B with an arc detection time of approximately 0.11 seconds.

  • The wavelet transform chip is implemented with Daubechies' 4 tap filter. It works at 20MHz in Field Programmable Gate array (FPGA) implementation of Quadrature Mirror Filter(QMF) Lattice Structure. In this paper, the structure contains taro-channel quadrature mirror filter, data format converter(DFC), delay control unit(DCU), and three 20$\times$8 bits real multiplier. The structures for the DFC and DCU need to he regular and scalable, require minimum number of regular, and thereby lead to an efficient and scalable architecture for the Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT). These results present the possibility that it can be used in Digital Signal Processing(DSP) application faster than Fourier transform at small area with lour cost.

  • This paper introduces a compression algorithm for power quality disturbance signal via the discrete wavelet transform, DWT. Fundamental signal or stationary signal is estimated and then subtracted from a given signal to obtain a difference signal or nonstationary signal. DWT is applied to a difference signal to get coefficients that are thresholded to reduce a number of coefficients. Simulation results show the resonable compression ratio while keep low signal distortion.

  • This paper proposes a new Artificial-Intelligent(AI) Power Quality(PQ) diagnosis algorithm using Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT), Fast Fourier Transform(FFT), Root-Mean-Square(RMS) value. The developed algorithm is able to detect and classify the PQ problems such as the transient, the voltage sag, the voltage swell, the voltage interruption and the total harmonics distortion. The 15.36[kHz] sampling frequency is used to measure the voltages in a power system. The measured signals are used for DWT, FFT, RMS calculation. For AI diagnosis of the PQ problems, a simple multi-layered Artificial Neural Network(ANN) with the back-propagation algorithm is adopted, programmed in C++ and tested in PSIM simulation studies. Finally, the algorithm, which is installed in MP PQ+256 with TI DSP320C6713, is proved to diagnose the PQ problems efficiently.

  • The computer generated hologram (CGH) designs and produces digital information for generating 3-D (3-Dimension) image using computer and software instead of optically-sensed hologram of light interference, and it can synthesis a virtual object which is physically not in existence. Since digital hologram includes an amount of data as can be seen at the process of digitization, it is necessary that the data representing digital hologram is reduced for storing, transmission, and processing. As the efforts that are to handle hologram with a type of digital information have been increased, various methods to compress digital hologram called by fringe pattern are groped. Suitable proposal is encoding of hologram. In this paper, we analyzed the properties of CGH using tools of frequency transform, assuming that a generated CGH is a 2D image by introducing DWT that is known as the better tool than DCT for frequency transform. The compression and reconstruction result which was extracted from the wavelet-based codecs illustrates that it has better properties for reconstruction at the maximum 2 times higher compression rate than the Previous researches of Yoshikawa[2] and Thomas[3].

  • Vibration-based fault detection and condition monitoring of rotating machinery, using statistical process control (SPC) combined with statistical pattern recognition methodology, has been widely investigated by many researchers. In particular, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is considered as a powerful tool for feature extraction in detecting fault on rotating machinery. Although DWT significantly reduces the dimensionality of the data, the number of retained wavelet features can still be significantly large. Then, the use of standard multivariate SPC techniques is not advised, because the sample covariance matrix is likely to be singular, so that the common multivariate statistics cannot be calculated. Even though many feature-based SPC methods have been introduced to tackle this deficiency, most methods require a parametric distributional assumption that restricts their feasibility to specific problems of process control, and thus limit their application. This study proposes a nonparametric multivariate control chart method, based on multiscale wavelet scalogram (MWS) features, that overcomes the limitation posed by the parametric assumption in existing SPC methods. The presented approach takes advantage of multi-resolution analysis using DWT, and obtains MWS features with significantly low dimensionality. We calculate Hotelling's $T^2$-type monitoring statistic using MWS, which has enough damage-discrimination ability. A bootstrap approach is used to determine the upper control limit of the monitoring statistic, without any distributional assumption. Numerical simulations demonstrate the performance of the proposed control charting method, under various damage-level scenarios for a bearing system.

  • In this paper, a digital image compression codec using 2D DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) is designed using the FPGA technology for real time operation The implemented image compression codec using wavelet decomposition consists of a wavelet kernel part for wavelet filtering process, a quantizer/huffman coder for quantization and huffman encoding of wavelet coefficients, a memory controller for interface with external memories, a input interface to process image pixels from A/D converter, a output interface for reconstructing huffman codes, which has irregular bit size, into 32-bit data having regular size data, a memory-kernel buffer to arrage data for real time process, a PCI interface part, and some modules for setting timing between each modules. Since the memory mapping method which converts read process of column-direction into read process of the row-direction is used, the read process in the vertical-direction wavelet decomposition is very efficiently processed. Global operation of wavelet codec is synchronized with the field signal of A/D converter. The global hardware process pipeline operation as the unit of field and each field and each field operation is classified as decomposition levels of wavelet transform. The implemented hardware used FPGA hardware resource of 11119(45%) LAB and 28352(9%) ESB in FPGA device of APEX20KC EP20k600CB652-7 and mapped into one FPGA without additional external logic. Also it can process 33 frames(66 fields) per second, so real-time image compression is possible.

  • Digital video content is the most information-intensive and high-value content. Therefore, it is necessary to protect the intellectual property rights of these contents, and this paper also proposes a watermarking method of digital image for this purpose. The proposed method uses the frequency characteristics of 2-Dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform (2D-DWT) for digital images and digital watermark on global data without using local or specific data of the image for watermark embedding. The method to insert digital watermark data uses a simple Quantization Index Modulation (QIM) and a multiple watermarking method that inserts the same watermark data in multiple. When extracting a watermark, multiple watermarks are extracted and the final watermark data is determined by a simple statistical method. This method is an empirical method for experimentally determining the parameters in the watermark embedding process. The proposed method performs experiments on various images against various attacks and shows the superiority of the proposed method by comparing the performance with the representative existing methods.

  • In this paper, a wavelet packet transform method is proposed for improving the altitude control performance of quadrotor UAV using an ultrasonic rangefinder. A ground tests are conducted using an ultrasonic rangefinder that is much used for vertical takeoff and landing. An ultrasonic rangefinder suffers from signal's spike due to specular reflectance and acoustic noise. The occurred spikes in short time span need to be analyzed at both sides time and frequency domain. The analyzed spikes of the ultrasonic rangefinder using a wavelet packet transform. Compared with the discrete wavelet transform, the wavelet packet decomposition can obtain more abundant time-frequency localization information, so it is more suitable for analyzing and processing ultrasonic signals spike. Experimental results show that it can effectively remove the spikes of the ultrasonic rangefinder.

  • Advanced signal processing techniques have been long introduced and widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM) and nondestructive evaluation (NDE). In our research, we applied several signal processing approaches for our embedded ultrasonic structural radar (EUSR) system to obtain improved damage detection results. The EUSR algorithm was developed to detect defects within a large area of a thin-plate specimen using a piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS) array. In the EUSR, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) was first applied for signal de-noising. Secondly, after constructing the EUSR data, the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) were used for the time-frequency analysis. Then the results were compared thereafter. We eventually chose continuous wavelet transform to filter out from the original signal the component with the excitation signal's frequency. Third, cross correlation method and Hilbert transform were applied to A-scan signals to extract the time of flight (TOF) of the wave packets from the crack. Finally, the Hilbert transform was again applied to the EUSR data to extract the envelopes for final inspection result visualization. The EUSR system was implemented in LabVIEW. Several laboratory experiments have been conducted and have verified that, with the advanced signal processing approaches, the EUSR has enhanced damage detection ability.
