Attempts to dope carbon nanotube (CNT) with impurities in order to control the electronic properties of the CNT is a natural course of action. Boron is known to improve both the structural and electronic properties. In this report, we study the field emission properties of Boron-doped double-walled CNT (DWCNT). Boron-doped DWCNT films were fabricated by catalytic decomposition of tetrahydrofuran and triisopropyl borate over a Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst at $900^{\circ}C$. We measured the field emission current by varying the doping amount of Boron from 0.8 to 1.8 wt%. As the amount of doped boron in the DWCNT increases, the turn-on-field of the DWCNT decreases drastically from 6 V/${\mu}m$ to 2 V/${\mu}m$. The current density of undoped CNT is 0.6 mA/$cm^2$ at 9 V, but a doped-DWCNT sample with 1.8 wt% achieved the same current density only at only 3.8 V. This shows that boron doped DWCNTs are potentially useful in low voltage operative field emitting device such as large area flat panel displays.
The transverse vibration of double walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) embedded in elastic medium with an initial imperfection is considered. In this paper, Timoshenko beam theory is employed. However the nonlocal theory is used for modeling the nano scale of nanotube. In addition, the governing Equations of motion are obtained utilizing the Hamilton's principle and simply-simply boundary conditions are assumed. Furthermore, the Navier method is used for determining the natural frequencies of DWCNT. Hence, some parameters such as nonlocality, curvature amplitude, Winkler and Pasternak elastic foundations and length of the curved DWCNT are analyzed and discussed. The results show that, the curvature amplitude causes to increase natural frequency. However, nonlocal coefficient and elastic foundations have important role in vibration behavior of DWCNT with imperfection.
This work represents the study of the vibration response of the double walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) for various boundary conditions. The inner and outer carbon nanotubes are modeled as two individual Euler-Bernoulli's elastic beams interacting each other by Van der waals force. Differential transform method (DTM) is used as a numerical method to solve the governing differential equations and associated boundary conditions. The influence of Winkler elastic medium on vibration frequency is also examined and results are interpreted. MATLAB is used as a tool for solving the governing differential equations. The fundamental natural frequencies are validating with those available in literature and observed a good agreement between them.
Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) with high purity were produced by the catalytic decomposition of tetrahydrofuran (THF) using a Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst at $800^{\circ}C$. The as-synthesized DWCNTs typically have catalytic impurities and amorphous carbon, which were removed by a two-step purification process consisting of acid treatment and oxidation. In the acid treatment, metallic catalysts were removed in HCl at room temperature for 5 hr with magnetic stirring. Subsequently, the oxidation, using air at $380^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr in the a vertical-type furnace, was used to remove the amorphous carbon particles. The DWCNT suspension was prepared by dispersing the purified DWCNTs in the aqueous sodium dodecyl sulfate solution with horn-type sonication. This was then air-sprayed on ITO glass to fabricate DWCNT field emitters. The field emission properties of DWCNT films related to transmittance were studied. This study provides the possibility of the application of large-area transparent CNT field emission cathodes.
Carbon nanotubes are drawing wide attention of research communities and several industries due to their versatile capabilities covering mechanical and other multi-physical properties. However, owing to extreme operating conditions of the synthesis process of these nanostructures, they are often imposed with certain inevitable structural deformities such as single vacancy and nanopore defects. These random irregularities limit the intended functionalities of carbon nanotubes severely. In this article, we investigate the mechanical behaviour of double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) under the influence of arbitrarily distributed single vacancy and nanopore defects in the outer wall, inner wall, and both the walls. Large-scale molecular simulations reveal that the nanopore defects have more detrimental effects on the mechanical behaviour of DWCNTs, while the defects in the inner wall of DWCNTs make the nanostructures more vulnerable to withstand high longitudinal deformation. From a different perspective, to exploit the mechanics of damage for achieving defect-induced shape modulation and region-wise deformation control, we have further explored the localized longitudinal and transverse spatial effects of DWCNT by designing the defects for their regional distribution. The comprehensive numerical results of the present study would lead to the characterization of the critical mechanical properties of DWCNTs under the presence of inevitable intrinsic defects along with the aspect of defect-induced spatial modulation of shapes for prospective applications in a range of nanoelectromechanical systems and devices.

In this paper, we have investigated ultrahigh frequency nano-mechanical resonators, made of DWCNTs with various wall lengths, via classical molecular dynamics simulations. We have aimed our analysis on the frequency variations of these resonators with the DWCNT wall lengths. The results show that the variations can be well fitted by either the Pearson VII function when the resonant frequency of normalized by its maximum frequency is plotted as a function of the inner/outer wall length ratio L5/L10 for different values of the outer wall length L10, and the Gauss distribution function when the resonant frequency of normalized by its maximum frequency is plotted as a function of the outer/inner wall length ratio for different values of the inner wall length.

In this paper, vibration characteristics of chiral double-walled carbon nanotubes entrenched on Kelvin's model. The Eringen's nonlocal elastic equations are being combined with Kelvin's theory to observe small scale response. A nonlocal model has been formulated to explore the frequency spectrum of chiral double-walled CNTs along with diversity of indices and nonlocal parameter. Wave propagation is proposed technique to establish field equations of model subjected to four distinct end supports. The significance of scale effect in relevance of length-to-diameter and thickness- to- radius ratios are discussed and displayed in detail.
We have investigated the synthesis and field emission properties of high-quality double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) using a catalytic chemical vapor deposition method and a hydrogen arc discharge method. The produced carbon materials using a catalytic CVD method indicated high-purity DWCNT bundles free of amorphous carbon covering on the surface. By adopting a hydrogen arc discharge method, we could obtained high-purity DWCNTs in large-scale. DWCNTs showed low turn-on voltage and higher emission stability compared with SWCNTs.
We investigated the field emission characteristics from the planar field emitters made of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) synthesized by a catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) method. Transmission electron microscopy, Thermogravimetric and Raman analysis showed that the carbon materials have a low defect level in their atomic carbon structure, pointing to the synthesis of high-purity DWCNTs. For field emission properties of DWCNTs, the turn-on field of DWCNTs was $1.9\;V/{\mu}m$ and the current density was about $74\;mA/cm^2$ at $8.1\;V/{\mu}m$, which is sufficient for the applications of field emission displays and vacuum microelectronic devices. The DWCNT field emitters also exhibited a uniform field emission pattern and good field emission stability in a diode configuration.

Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) were grown with vertical alignment on a Si wafer by using catalytic thermal chemical vapor deposition. This study investigated the effect of pre-annealing time of catalyst on the types of CNTs grown on the substrate. The catalyst layer is usually evolved into discretely distributed nanoparticles during the annealing and initial growth of CNTs. The 0.5-nm-thick Fe served as a catalyst, underneath which Al was coated as a catalyst support as well as a diffusion barrier on the Si substrate. Both the catalyst and support layers were coated by using thermal evaporation. CNTs were synthesized for 10 min by flowing 60 sccm of Ar and 60 sccm of H2 as a carrier gas and 20 sccm of C2H2 as a feedstock at 95 torr and $750^{\circ}C$. In this study, the catalyst and support layers were subject to annealing for 0~420 sec. As-grown CNTs were characterized by using field emission scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The annealing for 90~300 sec caused the growth of DWCNTs as high as ~670 ${\mu}m$ for 10 min while below 90 sec and over 420 sec 300~830 ${\mu}m$-thick triple and multiwalled CNTs occurred, respectively. Several radial breathing mode (RBM) peaks in the Raman spectra were observed at the Raman shifts of 112~191 cm-1, implying the presence of DWCNTs, TWCNTs, MWCNTs with the tube diameters 3.4, 4.0, 6.5 nm, respectively. The maximum ratio of DWCNTs was observed to be ~85% at the annealing time of 180 sec. The Raman spectra of the as-grown DWCNTs showed low G/D peak intensity ratios, indicating their low defect concentrations. As increasing the annealing time, the catalyst layer seemed to be granulated, and then grown to particles with larger sizes but fewer numbers by Ostwald ripening.
