In this paper, we compared two subjective assessment methods DSCQS(Double Stimulus Continuous Quality Scale method) and ACR(Absolute Category Rating). These methods are widely used in order to evaluate video quality for multimedia application. We performed subjective quality tests using DSCQS and ACR methods. The subjective scores obtained by the DSCQS and ACR methods show that these methods are highly correlated in terms of MOS(Mean Opinion Score) and have slightly lower correlation in terms of DMOS(Difference Mean Opinion Score). The results indicate that ACR method is an effective subjective quality assessment method, which shows compatible performance with DSCQS method and can evaluate a larger number of video sequences.

This paper presents an objective video quality evaluation method for digital mobile video. The proposed method is to objectify subjective quality by extracting edge region feature metric and blockiness effect. To evaluate performance of proposed algorithm, we carried out subjective video qualify test with the DSCQS method and obtained mean opinion score(MOS) values for CIF/QCIF 140 video clips. We compared error of proposed method with that of existing. The experiment results show that the proposed method has 25% higher performance.

In this paper, we carried out quality assessment and analysis of stereoscopic 3D Television pictures according to ITU-R contribution and recommendation by rating scales using DSCQS (Double-Stimuli Continuous Quality Scale) method. The evaluation results show that overall quality and sharpness of stereoscopic pictures revealed almost no difference compared to cases of mono pictures as to natural outdoor scenes, graphic images, and indoor scenes (about 3.0 above ~ 4.0), but depth perception and sensation of reality of stereoscopic images exhibit better quality performance over mono images as indicated more than 4.0 out of 5.0 grade. Evaluation results should be considered as human factors such as disparity when shooting and/or editing 3DTV.

In this paper, we present a depth scaling method for multiview images that could provide an 3D depth that a user prefers. Unlike previous works that change a camera configuration, the proposed method utilizes depth data in order to carry out the scaling of a depth range requested by users. From multivew images and their corresponding depth data, depth data is transformed into a disparity and the disparity is adjusted in order to control the perceived depth. In particular, our method can deal with multiview images captured by multiple cameras, and can be expanded from stereoscopic to multiview images. Based upon a DSCQS subjective evaluation test, our experimental results tested on an automultiscopic 3D display show that the perceived depth is appropriately scaled according to user's preferred depth.
In this paper, we propose a disparity-adaptive filtering method to reduce view-aliasing and inter-perspective aliasing on auto-multiscopic 3D display. View aliasing by the subsampled multi-view images could happen if the resolution of an auto-multiscopic monitor is lower than that of the original multi-view images. Furthermore, multi-view images on auto-multiscopic monitor usually cause eye strain and fatigue because of inter-perspective aliasing by discontinuity that exists between viewpoints. The greater disparity value becomes, the stronger these types of aliasing could be. Thus, we design a lowpass filter whose cut-off frequency is determined adaptively to the number of intermediate reconstructed views and their disparity's strength. Though experimental results, we show that the proposed filtering algorithm could reduce the aliasing effect very efficiently by using DSCQS (double stimulus continuous quality scale method).
In this paper, the perceptual rate control algorithm is studied for HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) encoder with bit allocation based on perceived visual quality. This paper proposes perceptual rate control algorithm which could consider perceived quality for HEVC encoding method. The proposed rate control algorithm employs adaptive bit allocation for frame and CTU level using the perceived visual importance of each CTU. For performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm, the proposed algorithm was implemented on HM 16.9 and tested for sequences in Class B under the CTC (Common Test Condition) RA (Random Access) case. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the bitrate of 3.12%, and improves BD-PSNR of 0.08dB and bitrate accuracy of 0.07% on average. And also, we achieved MOS improvement of 0.16 with the proposed method, compared with the conventional method based on DSCQS (Double Stimulus Continuous Quality Scale).

Recently, 3D technology based on depth image is widely used in various fields including 3D space recognition, image acquisition, interaction, and games. Depth camera is used in order to produce depth image, various types of effort are made to improve quality of the depth image. In this paper, we suggests using area-based Canny edge detector to improve depth image in applying 3D technology based on depth camera. The suggested method provides improved depth image with pre-processing and post-processing by fixing image quality deterioration, which may take place in acquiring depth image in a limited environment. For objective image quality evaluation, we have confirmed that the image is improved by 0.42dB at maximum, by applying and comparing improved depth image to virtual view reference software. In addition, with DSCQS(Double Stimulus Continuous Quality Scale) evaluation method, we are reassured of the effectiveness of improved depth image through objective evaluation of subjective quality.

This paper presents a detailed subjective quality assessment for the ultra-high definition (UHD) videos having frame rates of 30fps and 60 fps. The subjective assessment is based on the ITU-R BT-500 recommendations, where double stimulus continuous quality scale (DSCQS-type II) test is performed for the evaluation of the perceived quality of the user's in terms of differential mean opinion score (DMOS). Encoding of the UHD videos by opting encoders i.e. H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, and VP9 at five different quantization parameter (QP) levels is done to investigate the perceived user's quality of experience (QoE) given as DMOS. Moreover, the encoding efficiency as the encoding time for each encoder and qualitative performance by employing full-reference (FR) quality metrics are presented in this work.
Depth map upsampling is an approach to increase the spatial resolution of depth maps obtained from a depth camera. Depth map quality is closely related to 3D perception of stereoscopic image, multi-view image and holography. In general, the performance of upsampled depth map is evaluated by PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio). On the other hand, time-consuming 3D subjective tests requiring human subjects are carried out for examining the 3D perception as well as visual fatigue for 3D contents. Therefore, if an objective metric is closely correlated with a subjective test, the latter can be replaced by the objective metric. For this, this paper proposes a best metric by investigating the relationship between diverse objective metrics and 3D subjective tests. Diverse reference and no-reference metrics are adopted to evaluate the performance of upsampled depth maps. The subjective test is performed based on DSCQS test. From the utilization and analysis of three kinds of correlations, we validated that SSIM and Edge-PSNR can replace the subjective test.
