  • In this paper, a rotating tool clamping device was developed based on a shape memory alloy(SMA) and its feasibility as a tool holder was experimentally explored. The SMA-based device was able to alter clamping to unclamping through temperature control within 1 second. The means and repeatability(${\sigma}$) of the tool clamping force were 185.5N and 6N respectively and its drifts were less than 3% for an hour. Considering the temperature hysteresis of the SMA-based tool clamping device, it is necessary to heat the SMA ring to around $50^{\circ}C$ after tool change to obtain more clamping force.

  • The inelastic earthquake response of non-symmetric, braced steel buildings, designed according to the EC3 (steel structures) and EC8 (earthquake resistant design) codes, is investigated using 1, 3 and 5-story models, subjected to a set of 10, two-component, semi-artificial motions, generated to match the design spectrum. It is found that in these buildings, the so-called "flexible" edge frames exhibit higher ductility demands and interstory drifts than the "stiff" edge frames. We note that the same results were reported in an earlier study for reinforced concrete buildings and are the opposite of what was predicted in several other studies based on the over simplified, hence very popular, one-story, shear-beam type models. The substantial differences in such demands between the two sides suggest a need for reassessment of the pertinent code provisions. In a follow up paper, a design modification will be introduced that can lead to a more uniform distribution of ductility demands in the elements of all building edges. This investigation is another step towards more rational design of non-symmetric steel buildings.

  • A series of dynamic and static tests were conducted to observe the actual responses of a 1:5 scale 3-story reinforced concrete(RC) frame which was designed only for gravity loads. One of the major objectives of these experiments is to provide the calibration to the available static and dynamic inelastic analysis techniques. In this study, the experimental results were simulated by using a nonlinear analysis program for reinforced concrete frame, IDARC-2D. The evaluation of the degree of the simulation leads to the conclusion that while the global behaviors such as story drifts and shears can be in general simulated with the limited accuracy in the dynamic nonlinear analysis, it is rather easy and simple to get the fairly high level of accuracy in the prediction of global and local behaviors in the static nonlinear analysis by using IDARC-2D.

  • In order to investigate the effect of the height of application point of lateral loads and reinforcing steel bars in walls and columns in improving the seismic behavior of confined concrete block masonry walls, an experimental research program is conducted. A total of four one-half scale specimens are tested under repeated lateral loads. Specimens are tested to failure with increasing maximum lateral drifts while a vertical axial load was applied and maintained constant. The constant vertical axial stresses applied are 0, 0.84 and 1.80MPa, while the amount of reinforcements in horizontal and vertical directions are $0\%,\;0.08\%\;and\;0.18\%$ respectively. Test results obtained for each specimen include cracking patterns, load-deflection data, and strains in reinforcement and walls in critical locations. Analysis of test data showed that above parameters generate a considerable effect on the seismic performance of confined concrete block masonry walls.

  • This paper deals with the development of expressions relating structural seismic response parameters to the epicentral distances of an earthquake and the natural period of several reinforced concrete buildings (6, 9 and 12 storey), with three floor plans: symmetric, monosymmetric, and unsymmetric. These structures are subjected to seismic spectrum of accelerations collected during the Boumerdes earthquake (Algeria, May $21^{st}$, 2003, Mw=6.8) at different epicentral distances. The objective of this study is to develop relations between structural responses namely: base shear, storey displacements, interstory drifts and epicentral distance and fundamental period for a given earthquake. The seismic response of the buildings is carried out in both longitudinal transverse and directions by the response spectrum method (modal spectral approach).

  • For comparison, we used Ca and Mg as reducers to produce TiFe hydrogen stroage alloy from Fe and TiO$_2$by the Reduction-Diffusion process. The results obtained were as follow. \circled1 Ca was found to be effective both for reduction and diffusion processes. Moreover, Ca oxide was easily removed in an NH$_4$Cl solution after the reaction. \circled2 In the case of using Ca as a reducer, the Reduction-Diffusion process is considered to take place in the foiling three steps. First, TiO$_2$is reduced to Ti by Ca over 100$0^{\circ}C$. Second, the atomic Ti drifts in the Ca melt and meets Fe particles. Finally, the atomic Ti diffuses in to the Fe particles. \circled3 In the case of using Mg as a reducer, We found that the reduction reaction of TiO$_2$went well. But the reduced Ti scarcely diffused into Fe particles. This was probably because no Mg melt was formed due to the high vapor pressure of Mg.

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most prevalent forms of joint disorder, associated with a tremendous socioeconomic burden worldwide. Various non-genetic and lifestyle-related factors such as aging and obesity have been recognized as major risk factors for OA, underscoring the potential role for epigenetic regulation in the pathogenesis of the disease. OA-associated epigenetic aberrations have been noted at the level of DNA methylation and histone modification in chondrocytes. These epigenetic regulations are implicated in driving an imbalance between the expression of catabolic and anabolic factors, leading eventually to osteoarthritic cartilage destruction. Cellular senescence and metabolic abnormalities driven by OA-associated risk factors appear to accompany epigenetic drifts in chondrocytes. Notably, molecular events associated with metabolic disorders influence epigenetic regulation in chondrocytes, supporting the notion that OA is a metabolic disease. Here, we review accumulating evidence supporting a role for epigenetics in the regulation of cartilage homeostasis and OA pathogenesis.

  • This paper presents a procedure for the frequency-domain analysis of a non-proportionally damped structure subjected to stationary seismic loads and for the finding of proper damper locations through simple analysis procedure without iteration. The shear areas of the dampers are decided in proportion to the magnitude of the components of the primary mode shape vector and to the root mean square values of the story drifts, The root-mean-squear responses are obtained using a power spectral density function for the ground acceleration. the results are compared with those obtained from damper placement decided in sequency based on the maximum story drift. According to the results the reliability of the proposed method turns out to be satisfactory compared to the methods which required iteration.

  • In this study, the control performances of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) are evaluated and compared for seismically excited structures. Results show that TLCD is more effective than TMD for interstory drift control while TLCD is as effective as TMD for acceleration control. In special, it is shown that interstory drifts are maximally controlled in lower floors and accelerations are reduced most in upper floors. This indicates that TLCD is an effective controller for earthquake-induced structures in terms of structural safety as well as serviceability.
