Bio-inspired Evasive Movement of UAVs based on Dragonfly Algorithm in Military Environment

  • Applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the military environment have become popular because they require minimum human contribution and can avoid accidents during missions. UAVs are employed in various missions such as reconnaissance, observation, aggression, and protection. Consequently, counter-measures, known as anti-drone technologies, have been developed as well. In order to protect against threats from anti-drone technologies and enhance the survivability of UAVs, this study proposes an evasive measure. The proposed bio-inspired evasive maneuver of a UAV mimics a dragonfly's irregular flight. The unpredictable UAV movement is able to confuse enemies and avoid threats, thereby enhancing the UAV's survivability. The proposed system has been implemented on a commercial UAV platform (AR Drone 2.0) and tested in a real environment. The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed flight pattern has larger displacement values compared to a regular flight maneuver, thus making the UAV's position is difficult to predict.

잠자리 유헝 날개의 무차원 진동수에 따른 가시화 연구 (Visualization Study on a Reduced Frequency of a Dragonfly type wing)

  • The purpose of this visualization study is to investigate the effect of reduced frequency qualitatively by examining wake patterns for dragonfly flight motion. Dragonflies have two pairs of wing (a forewing and hindwing) and flight is achieved by a pitching and plunging, so it makes a separation over the wings. The separation affects the wake pattern and changed wake pattern has an influence on lift, drag, and propulsion. This experiment was conducted by using a smoke wire technique and a camera fixed above the test section used to take a photograph of the wake. An electronic device is mounted below the test section to find the exact mean positional angle of the wing. The reduced frequency in the experiment is 0.15, 0.3 and 0.45. Results show that reduced frequency is closely related to the wake pattern that determines flight efficiency.

A dragonfly inspired flapping wing actuated by electro active polymers

  • An energy-based variational approach is used for structural dynamic modeling of the IPMC (Ionic Polymer Metal Composites) flapping wing. Dynamic characteristics of the wing are analyzed using numerical simulations. Starting with the initial design, critical parameters which have influence on the performance of the wing are identified through parametric studies. An optimization study is performed to obtain improved flapping actuation of the IPMC wing. It is shown that the optimization algorithm leads to a flapping wing with dimensions similar to the dragonfly Aeshna Multicolor wing. An unsteady aerodynamic model based on modified strip theory is used to obtain the aerodynamic forces. It is found that the IPMC wing generates sufficient lift to support its own weight and carry a small payload. It is therefore a potential candidate for flapping wing of micro air vehicles.

  • The tiny dragonfly, Nannophya pygmaea(Odonata: Libellulidae) is one the smallest dragonflies in the world and listed as a second-degree endangered wild animal and plant in Korea. For the long-term conservation of such endangered species, an investigation on nation-wide genetic magnitude and nature of genetic diversity is required as a part of conservation strategy. We, thus, sequenced a portion of mitochondrial COI gene, corresponding to "DNA Barcode" region(658 bp) from 68 N. pygmaea individuals collected over six habitats in Korea. The sequence data were used to investigate genetic diversity within populations and species, geographic variation within species, phylogeographic relationship among populations, and phylogenetic relationship among haplotypes. Phylogenetic analysis and uncorrected pairwise distance estimate showed overall low genetic diversity within species. Regionally, populations in southern localities such as Gangjin and Gokseong in Jeollanamdo Province showed somewhat higher genetic diversity estimates than those of remaining regions in Korean peninsula. Although geographic populations of N. pygmaea were subdivided into two groups, distance- or region-based geographic partition was not observed.

잠자리 유형 날개의 위상차에 대한 가시화 연구 (Visualization Study on the Phase Difference of a Dragonfly Type Wing)

  • 본 가시화 연구는 잠자리 유형 모델의 위상차에 관한 후류의 변화를 관찰함으로써 위상차 효과를 정성적으로 조사하기 위해 수행되었다. 본 가시화 실험에 사용된 잠자리 유형 모델은 잠자리의 날개 형상을 모방한 앞뒤 날개를 가진 쌍으로 구성되어 있으며, 잠자리의 플래핑 날개를 확대하여 제작하였다. 본 연구는 smoke-wire 기법을 통한 가시화 실험이 수행되었고, 정확한 날개위치각도를 찾기 위하여 동기화 조정장치가 사용되었다. 이때 날개위치각도의 불확실성은 약 $\pm$$1^{\cire}$정도이며, 순간 날개 위치각도는 $-16.5^{\cire}$에서 $22.8^{\cire}$까지 변한다. 본 실험은 앞ㆍ뒤 날개의 위상차가 $0^{\cire}$, $90^{\cire}$, $180^{\cire}$, $270^{\cire}$인 경우 수행되었다. 본 연구 결과 위상차 $90^{\cire}$, $180^{\cire}$, $270^{\cire}$에서는 Karman Vortex가 발생되지만, 위상차 $0^{\cire}$에서는 Karman Vortex 현상이 관찰되지 않는다.

  • 고추잠자리(Crocothemis servilia Drury)의 精子完成過程을 究明하기 爲하여, 本 硏究에 着手한 바, 다른 無脊椎動物의 精子完成過程에서 이미 밝혀진 構造들과 比較해 가면서 特殊한 分化相을 觀察한 結果, 첫째 核의 染色質이 漸次 濃縮되기 始作함에 따라서 核의 모양도 球形에서 楕圓形으로, 楕圓形에서 圓錐形으로 變하였으며 둘째로 核이 細胞의 一極端으로 移動하고 核의 尾部가 陷入되며 셋째 中心粒이 核 陷入 部位에 位置하여 여기에서부터 軸 가 形成된다. 넷째는 골지體에서 起因된 尖體顆粒은 核의 先端으로 移動되어 결국 尖體를 形成하게 된다.

글라이딩 하는 잠자리 날개 주름의 영향에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Study on the Effects of Corrugation of the Gliding Dragonfly Wing)

  • 단면상에 주름이 있는 잠자리 날개의 공기역학적 성능을 검토하기 위해 정지상태에 있는 2차원 비정상 수치해석을 수행하였다. 해석 조건으로서 레이놀즈수는 150과 1400, 10,000이며 받음각은 0도에서 40도까지 변화시켰다. 해석 결과 임계각 이상의 받음각에서는 주름에 의한 양력의 증가량은 거의 일정하게 유지되며 또한 날개 윗면의 주름은 양력의 증가에 거의 영향이 없음을 알 수 있었다.
