압전 액추에이터를 이용한 DMFC의 공기 공급 시스템 (Air Supplying System for DMFC using Piezo Actuators)

  • DMFC는 산소를 반응물질로 사용하기 때문에 캐소드 전극이 외부 공기와 직접 접촉해야 한다. 그러나 휴대기기에 사용하는 경우에 사용자의 신체에 의해 공기의 흡입구가 가려져 산소공급이 되지 않는 현상이 발생할 수 있다. DMFC에 공기를 공급하기 위해 냉각팬을 사용하는데 냉각팬은 유로의 압력 손실 및 변동에 따라 출력의 변동이 심하다. 본 논문에서는 냉각팬의 문제점을 해결하기 위해 압전 액추에이터를 이용하여 공기 공급 시스템을 설계하였다. 설계된 공기 공급 시스템의 성능을 평가하기 위해 DMFC 평가 시스템을 구현하였고, 구현된 시스템을 통해 MP3 플레이어를 동작 시켰다.

  • DMFC(Direct Methanol Fuel Cell) has been considered as an attractive option to produce electric power in many application. In this study, in order to estimate the effects of the methanol concentration, wind velocity and temperature on the performance of DMFC, a physical prototype of DMFC was designed and manufactured, and the stack voltage of DMFC was measured during the operation of DMFC. Expecially, the experimental results showed that a low stack temperature, a low wind velocity and an excess methanol concentration lead to the increase of the time to reach the maximum stack voltage.

  • We consider the optimum air flow channel design for DMFC's in the present study. The effect of pressure drop across the inlet and outlet of a stack on the performance of a DMFC is the optimization of such geometric parameters is crucial to minimize the parasitic power usage by the auxiliary devices such as fuel pumps and blowers. In this paper, we present how the pressure drop control can optimize the driving point of a DMFC stack. Further, we show how the optimal fuel utilization ratio can be achieved, not degrading the performance of DMFC stacks. Overall, we discuss how the flow channel design affects the selection of balance of plant(BOP) components, the design of DMFC systems and the system efficiency.

  • In this study, we develop a one-dimensional (1-D), two-phase, transient-thermal DMFC model to investigate the effect of methanol concentration fluctuation that usually occurs in active-type direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) systems. 1-D transient simulations are conducted and time-dependent behaviors of DMFCs are analyzed under various DMFC operating conditions such as anode/cathode stoichiometry, cell temperature, and cathode inlet humidification. The simulation results indicate that the effect of methanol concentration fluctuation on DMFC performance can be mitigated by proper control of anode/cathode stoichiometry, providing a guideline to optimize operating conditions of active DMFC systems.

  • This paper explains a DMFC-Lithium Battery hybrid system applied to a forklift. A conventional Lead Acid battery forklift has several problems: long charging times, short operation times, and frequent battery replacements. As a result, hydrogen-powered forklifts are replacing Lead acid battery-powered forklifts due to their shorter refueling time and longer operation times. However, in doing so, we are confronted with the problem of a high hydrogen refueling infrastructure. A Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC), on the other hand, is an eco-friendly generator that directly converts the chemical energy of methanol into electricity. In general, DMFC is regarded as a small power generator under kW power. In this paper, a DMFC-Battery hybrid system is applied to a 1.5 ton forklift by increasing the power output of the DMFC stack and utilizing the high charge-discharge characteristics of a lithium battery.

  • 수소이온 교환 막을 가진 직접 메탄올 연료전지(DMFC)는 기존의 전력원에 비해 많은 장점을 가지고 있다. 그러나 직접메탄올 연료전지는 메탄올 crossover, 음극의 과전압, limiting current density 등 해결해야할 문제들이 있다. 직접메탄올 연료전지의 물리화학적 현상은 여러 편미분방정식들로 표현 가능하다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 편미분방정식을 풀기위해 FEMLAB를 이용하였다. FEMLAB은 PDE를 기초로 문제를 정의하고 1, 2, 3D, 비선형, 그리고 시간의 함수 형태의 편미분방정식들로 정의된 시스템을 전산모사하기위해 디자인되었다. 시스템의 메탄올 농도 분포를 알아보기 위해 촉매층에서 전기화학적반응식으로 Tafel식을 적용하여 전산모사를 수행하였다. 전산모사를 통해 음극의 촉매층에서 메탄올 농도의 급격한 감소는 직접 메탄올 연료전지의 성능저해의 요인임을 확인하였다.

  • 본 연구는 메탄올과 공기를 이용하여 상온, 상압에서 전기를 발생시키는 휴대폰용 전원공급 장치의 개발에 관한 것이다. 이 장치는 직접 메탄을 연료전지(DMFC)와 Back-up전지가 병렬로 연결되어 있어, 통화시 소요 전력의 최대 $50\%$ DMFC가 공급하고 나머지 부분은 Back-up 전지가 공급한다. 또한 통화 대기시에는 DMFC가 $100\%$ 필요 전력을 공급하고, 잉여 전력으로 Back-up전지를 충전한다. 상기 DMFC는 유효면적이 $9cm^2$인 8개의 단위전지가 직렬로 연결되어 있으며, 휴대폰의 작동 전압 범위인 2.5-3.9V의 전압을 출력한다.

  • This study considers the feasibility of the concentration control of the methanol solution by oscillating flow in the anode channel of passive type Direct Methanol Fuel Cells(DMFC). DMFC stack performance is largely influenced by the fuel concentration. If the fuel concentration is either lower than 0.5M or more than 2M, its performance deteriorates seriously because of the fuel starvation or the fuel crossover. In this respect the optimization of the fuel concentration is crucially important to maximize the DMFC stack performance. In this work, the effects of oscillating actuation in the fuel supply are studied to control the fuel concentration. Two important nondimensional parameters are introduced, each of which represents either the oscillating frequency or the oscillating amplitude. It is shown how these factors affect the stack performance and the efficiency of the DMFC stack.

  • A 900 W scale direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) stack is designed and fabricated for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications. To meet the volume and weight requirements, metallic bipolar plates are applied to the DMFC stack for the first time wherein POS470FC was chosen as bipolar plate material. To ensure good robustness of the metallic bipolar plate based DMFC stack, finite element method based simulations are conducted using a commercial ANSYS Fluent software. The stress buildup and deformation characteristics on bipolar plates and end plates are analyzed in details. The present DMFC stack exhibits the performance of 1,130 W at 32 V and 35.3 A, clearly demonstrating that it could successfully operate for UAVs requiring around 1,000 W of power.

  • We present a miniature Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (micro-DMFC) using platinum sputtered microcolumn electrodes with a limited amount of fuel. We use the microcolumn electrode in order to improve the power density of the micro-DMFC that consists of two electrodes and polymer electrolyte. We also design the built-in fuel chamber in the anode for the portable electronics applications. We design and fabricate both microcolumn and planar electrodes, having an identical projective area of 5mm${\times}$5mm. The diffusion current density of the microcolumn electrode is 1.73 times higher than that of the planar electrode at electrode potential of 1.1V in the half-cell test. The micro-DMFC based on the microcolumn electrodes shows the maximum power of 10.8$\pm$7.54㎼(43.23$\pm$0.16㎼/$\textrm{cm}^2$) at the projective area of 5mm${\times}$5mm, while the planar electrode micro-DMFC shows the maximum power of 0.81$\pm$0.42㎼(3.24$\pm$1.68㎼/$\textrm{cm}^2$) at the same projective area. The micro-DMFC based on the microcolumn electrodes shows 13 times higher power density that the micro-DMFC based on the planar electrodes does.
