  • One of the primary means of achieving global competitiveness is to reduce the COPQ in our business units. Although the COPQ is not known precisely, it is known to be very high. Also, it may be underestimated by the hidden costs due to non-value added activities, such as potential lost sales, costs of redesign due to quality reasons, and extra manufacturing costs due to defects, etc. In any manufacturing or service operation, all actions and resource expenditures of a company should be focused on creating value for customers. Any activity or resource of not creating the value for customers could be regarded as waste, which consequently causes the COPQ. In this paper, a management system is developed for evaluating and reporting the COPQ in our business units, based on the Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) roadmap.

  • Over ten years, 6sigma management is applied a lot in the part of indirect business as well as the manufacturing industry. But it has still been used restrictively the technique used on DMAIC that is a basic Roadmap of 6 sigma. This paper finds the improving skills that is used in the parts of manufacturing and indirect business and demonstrates their available scope with 6sigma projects. And this indicates which skills for improving are used valuable on each step of DMAIC with a systematic classification.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to improve the chromaticity coordinate quality of white LED packages for automobiles that require high quality and reliability. Methods: The project follows the structured methodology of the Six Sigma DMAIC Roadmap, which consists of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control phases. Results: A CTQ is determined based on COPQ analysis, and a process map and a XY matrix are utilized for selecting process input variables. Three vital Few Xs are identified through data analysis; amount to mix at one time, deviation by head pumps, and deviation by production magazines, and process improvements are performed for each of the three vital Few Xs. Conclusion: The improved process conditions for the three vital Few Xs are applied to the production line, and the results show that the percent defective of chromaticity coordinate has improved from 1.59% to 0.63% and a financial effect of about 50 million won per year is obtained.

  • Innovation activities represented by Six Sigma (6σ) led to improvements not only in manufacturing industries but also in various business fields. In the aviation industry, Six Sigma has been used as a tool of innovation since the beginning of 2000, and it has developed into a comprehensive form of innovation activity that includes various improvement tools. In this study, the innovation activities in K company that is a representative company of aviation industry are summarized in the last 10 years, and the effectiveness of the innovation tools and the performance of the tasks are also analyzed. The results of 2,091 projects over the past decade have been analyzed from various perspectives. First, we found out the tools that were used frequently at each DMAIC step, showed their frequency, and analyzed the evaluation results for the project. The project was evaluated from grade 1 (highest level) to grade 7 (lowest level) with an average grade of 4.1 for the overall project. The evaluation grades of the projects were compared and analyzed in terms of the qualifications of the leader, the roadmap for the implementation of the project, the financial effect, the size of the financial effect, the business classification, and the project execution period. These results may suggest new perspectives for companies considering or adopting innovation programs.
