Processing of low toughness graphite material requires high-speed machine tools and DLC coating. In this study, results of investigation of the tool wear and machining properties of the DLC coating according to the thickness, and the machining time of the tool used for the machining of graphite electrodes, were as follows. 1. DLC coating thickness shows a larger wear amount of the tool center in accordance with thickness; the wear amount of the tool increases in proportion to the machining time. 2. The difference between the amount of wear depending on the processing time shows edge portions larger than the tool wear amount in the center. This amount of wear of the tool edge is formed since the rotating torque is in contact with the graphite material surface significantly more than the central portion. 3. The thicker the DLC coating, the more the coating tool eliminated of the coating area by the interface between the cemented carbide tool being coated with an increased friction of the graphite material and the DLC coating area.

In this work, diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are coated onto plasma nitrided AISI 4140 steel by DC-pulsed PECVD. One problem of DLC films is their very poor adhesion on steel substrates. The purpose of the nitriding was to enhance adhesion between the substrate and the DLC films. The white layer formation is avoided. Plasma nitriding increased adhesion from 8 N for DLC coating to 25 N for duplex coating. Duplex plasma nitriding/DLC coating was proven to be more effective in improving the adhesion. The purpose of the bond layer was to enhance adhesion between the substrate and the DLC films.
DLC coatings have been widely applied in industrial fields that require high corrosion resistance due to their excellent mechanical characteristics and chemical stability. In this research, effects of DLC coating thickness and defects on corrosion resistance were investigated for application of metallic bipolar plates in polymer membrane electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs). Results revealed that a DLC coating thickness of 0.7 ㎛ could lead to a defect size reduction of about 75.9% compared to that of 0.3 ㎛.As a result of potentiodynamic polarization experiments, the current density under a potential of 0.6 V was measured to be less than 1 ㎂/cm2,which was an excellent value. Inparticular, the delamination ratio and the decrease rate of maximum pitting depth were up to 84.8% and 63.3%, respectively, with an increase in the DLC coating thickness. These results demonstrate that DLC coating thickness and defects are factors that can affect corrosion resistance of DLC coating and its substrate.

Various surface treatments and thin film coating processes on the surface of injection die steel have been developed to extend the life. Most of previous studies were mainly focused on investigating the wear and static bonding behavior of thin films. In this study complex surface treatments of DLC coating combined with ion nitriding were applied to increase fatigue life and wear resistance. Ion nitriding, DLC coating, and DLC coating following nitriding on the surface of Fe-3.0Ni-0.7Cr-1.4Mn-X steel were investigated to uncover the beneficial effect which is applicable to injection die. The effect of various surface treatments and coating conditions on high cycle fatigue resistance was studied. Surface morphology change during fatigue tests were observed with AFM. Fatigue life of the die steel increased by 10 to 1,000 times at the various level of stress amplitudes in the condition of DLC coating following the ion nitriding for 3 hrs comparing with the only DLC coated condition.
Various heat-treated and surface coating methods are used to mitigate abrasion in sliding machine parts. The most cost effective of these methods involves hard coatings such as diamond-like carbon (DLC). DLC has various advantages, including a high level of hardness, low coefficient of friction, and low wear rate. In practice, a supporting layer is generally inserted between the DLC layer and the steel substrate to improve the load carrying capacity. In this study, an indentation and sliding contact problem involving a small, hard, spherical particle and a DLC-coated steel surface is modeled and analyzed using a nonlinear finite element code, MARC, to investigate the influence of the supporting layer thickness on the coating characteristics and the related coating failure mechanisms. The results show that the amount of plastic deformation and the maximum principal stress decrease with an increase in the supporting layer thickness. However, the probability of the high tensile stress within the coating layer causing a crack is greatly increased. Therefore, in the case of DLC coating with a supporting layer, fatigue wear can be another important cause of coating layer failure, together with the generally well-known abrasive wear.
Dental Ni-Ti files must ensure stability and resistance to fatigue fracture. DLC and ta-C were coated to remove defects on the surface and ensure stability, and the surface characteristics were investigated. When coated with DLC, it was black, and in case of ta-C coating, it was blue-black. Scratches, which are defects caused by mechanical processing, were formed on the surface of the un-coated Ni-Ti file from the end of the file along the direction of processing, with the Pro-file appearing in the vertical direction and the K-file appearing in the file direction. Scratches were reduced on the coated surface, and the surface roughness was greatly reduced after coating compared to before coating. The un-coated Ni-Ti file had the lowest hardness, the DLC-coated file had the highest hardness, and ta-C showed relatively high hardness. The elastic modulus of the DLC coating film was high, and the ta-C elastic modulus was low. The adhesion of the DLC coating film tended to be higher than that of ta-C, and the wear loss amount of DLC coating of taC was lower. The corrosion potential of the ta-C coating increased significantly, and the corrosion current density decreased.

A very simple and cost-effective method for fabrication of SiOx-incorporated diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films at a preparation temperature of less than $200^{\circ}C$ was developed. Since DLC coating can be prepared not under vacuum but atmospheric conditions without any carrier gas flow, not only wafers but also powderic substrates can be used for DLC coating. Formation of DLC coating could result in appearance of superhydrophobic behaviors, which was sustained in a wide range of pH (1~14). DLC-coated surfaces selectively interacted with toluene in a toluene/water mixture. These results imply that our preparation method of the DLC coating can be useful in many application fields such as creating self-cleaning surfaces, and water and air purification filters.
DLC (diamond liked carbon) coating of the tungsten carbide (WC) alloy core surface for molding a glass aspheric lens improves the quality of glass lens and the molding core and is characterized by high hardness, high elasticity, abrasion resistance and chemical stability. In this study, the effect of DLC coating of a thin film by means of the filtered AIP (arc ion plating) technique was examined on Ra and shape of the coated surface. Roughness before and after DLC coating was measured and the result showed that the roughness was improved after coating as compared to before coating. It was observed that DLC coating of the WC alloy core surface for molding had an effect on improving the roughness and shape of the core surface. It is considered that this will have an effect on improving abrasion resistance and the service life of the core surface.
Amorphous carbon (a-C) has excellent wear resistance and, therefore is used as a coating to protect numerous mechanical components to prolong their lifetimes. Among the a-C coatings, diamond-like carbon (DLC) and DLC-containing silicon (Si-DLC) receive extensive attention owing to their enhanced wear resistance and low frictional characteristics. In this study, the friction and wear characteristics of DLC and Si-DLC coatings are analyzed. For comparative analysis, DLC-coated and Si-DLC-coated vanes are utilized with the counterpart of a roller for the friction tests. Since the lubricated mechanical components are generally vulnerable to wear when a lubricant film does not form properly, friction tests are conducted under boundary lubrication conditions to promote wear. A cylinder-on-cylinder type tribometer is used to perform the friction tests with various normal load conditions. After the friction test, a 3D laser confocal microscope is used for quantifying the wear volume to calculate the wear rate of each specimen. Consequently, the DLC-coated specimen shows a lower coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate than the specimen without the coating, while the Si-DLC coating shows a higher COF than the bare specimen. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving the efficiency and reliability of compressors.

The various surface treated conditions of Fe-3.0%Ni-0.7%Cr-1.4%Mn-X steel such as as-received, ion nitriding, DLC coated, DLC coated after nitriding for 3 hrs and 6 hrs were investigated to evaluate the beneficial effect for plastic mold steel. Micro Vickers hardness tester was used to estimate nitriding depth from the hardness profile and to measure hardness on the surface. Elastic modulus and residual stress were measured by a nanoindentator. Scratch test and SP (small ball punch test) were utilized to assess the adhesive strength of DLC coating. The depth of nitriding layer was measured as $50{\mu}m$ for the condition of 3 hrs nitriding and $90{\mu}m$ for that of 6 hrs nitriding. Hardness, elastic modulus, residual stress of DLC coating were 20.37 GPa, 162.78 GPa and -1456 MPa respectively. Residual stress on the surface of DLC coating after nitriding could increase to -3914 MPa by introducing nitriding before DLC coating. During the 'Ball-On-Disc' test ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particles pulled out from the surface of nitrized layer tend to enhance abrasive wear mode since the fraction of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ (Fe4N) in ion-nitrized layer is known to increases with nitriding time. Thus the specific wear rate of the nitriding layer increased. Comparing with nitriding the specific wear rate in work piece disc as well as ball decreased prominently in DLC coating due to the remarkable reduction in friction coefficient.
