As inter-network traffics grows rapidly, the router systems as a network component becomes to be capable of not only wire-speed packet processing but also plentiful programmability for quality services. A network processor technology is widely used to achieve such capabilities in the high-end router. Although providing two such capabilities, the network processor can't support a deep packet processing at nominal wire-speed. Considering QoS may result in performance degradation of processing packet. In order to achieve foster processing, one chipset of network processor is occasionally not enough. Using more than one urges to consider a problem that is, for instance, an out-of-order delivery of packets. This problem can be serious in some applications such as voice over IP and video services, which assume that packets arrive in order. It is required to develop an effective packet processing mechanism leer using more than one network processors in parallel in one linecard unit of the router system. Simulation analysis is also needed for verifying the mechanism. We propose the packet processing mechanism consisting of more than two NPs in parallel. In this mechanism, we use a load-balancing algorithm that distributes the packet traffic load evenly and keeps the sequence, and then verify the algorithm with simulation analysis. As a simulation tool, we use DEVSim++, which is a DEVS formalism-based hierarchical discrete-event simulation environment developed by KAIST. In this paper, we are going to show not only applicability of the DEVS formalism to hardware modeling and simulation but also predictability of performance of the load balancer when implemented with FPGA.
Proposed in the paper is an agent based and object-oriented methodology to create a virtual logistics support system model. The proposed virtual logistics support system model consists of three types of objects: the logistics force agent model(static model), the military supplies transport manager model(function model), the military supplies state manager model(dynamic model). A logistic force agent model consists of two agent: main function agent and function agent. To improve the reusability and composability of a logistics force agent model, the function agent is designed to adapt to different logistics force agent configuration. A military supplies transport manager is agent that get information about supply route, make decisions based on decision variables, which are maintained by the military supplies state manager, and transport military supplies. A military supplies state manager is requested military supplies from logistics force agent, provide decision variables such as the capacity, order of priority. For the implementation of the proposed virtual logistics force agent model, this paper employs Discrete Event Systems Specification(DEVS) formalism.

Tsunami is a frightful natural disaster that causes severe damages worldwide. To minimize the damage, South Korea has built a tsunami warning system and designated evacuation sites in the east and south coasts. However, such countermeasures have not been verified whether they are adequate to minimize casualties since tsunami rarely occurs in South Korea. Recently, due to increasing earthquakes in the west coast of Japan, the likelihood of South Korea entering the damage area of tsunami rises; thus, in this paper, we develops a simulator based on Unity game engine to simulate the evacuation from tsunami. In order to increase the fidelity of the simulation results, the simulator applies a tsunami simulation model that analyzes coastal inundation based on cellular automata. In addition, the objects included in tsunami evacuation, such as humans, are modeled as an agent model that determines the situation and acts itself, based on the discrete-event system specification (DEVS), a mathematical formalism for describing a discrete event system. The tsunami simulation model and agent models are integrated and visualized in the simulator using Unity game engine. As an example of the use of this simulator, we verify the existing tsunami evacuation site in Gwangalli Beach in Busan and suggest the optimal alternative site minimizing casualties.
Even thought modernized marine navigation devices help navigators, marine accidents has been often occurred and ship collision is one of the main types of the accidents. Various studies on the assessment method of collision risk have been reported, and studies using fuzzy theory are remarkable for the reason that reflect linguistic and ambiguous criteria for real situations. In these studies, collision risks were assessed on the assumption that the current state of navigation ship would be maintained. However, navigators ignore or turn off frequent alarms caused by the devices predicting collision risk, because they think that they can avoid the collisions in the most of situations. This paper proposes a model of predicting ship collision risk considering the general patterns of collision avoidance, and the approach is based on fuzzy inference and discrete event system specification (DEVS) formalism.

Discrete event simulation environments often need to be modified because additional questions to systems may become apparent while observing the simulation results repeatedly. It leads to increasing development budget and depreciating the effectiveness of the environment. To avoid the modifications and to generate the altered results, this paper applies an Event Control Model (ECM) with control functions that modulate, delete and generate the events at the simulation time. In addition, this paper suggests an easier approach for domain-users, who do not want to program at source code level, by using ECM templates. The simulators with the ECMs can have better extensibility because it becomes more adaptable to possibly unanticipated changes. It prevents increasing development costs due to modifications or development of new models by M&S experts, and it provides a new alternative step to domain users. To support the effectiveness of this approach, this paper describes a relevant example, which is composed of an initial simulation model based on our empirical studies. It will show that there exist the uncountable benefits because the existing simulator is reused by domain users without new projects.

Survivability of combat system is changed by various facts in dynamic battle field. Existing survivability analysis programs for a combat system analyze statically survivability for combat system in spite of dynamic battle environment. To overcome this limitation, we propose an agent-based modeling and simulation method for dynamic survivability analysis of the combat system. To do this, we have adopted DEVS formalism, SES/MB framework and agent technology for modeling components of the combat system and crews. The proposed method has advantages of being able to analyze not only a static survivability of the combat system but also a dynamic survivability of combat system by applying responses of crews in battle field.

This paper suggests an event-based scenario manager capable of creating and editing a scenario for shipbuilding process simulation based on multibody dynamics. To configure various situation in shipyards and easily connect with multibody dynamics, the proposed method has two main concepts: an Actor and an Action List. The Actor represents the anatomic unit of action in the multibody dynamics and can be connected to a specific component of the dynamics kernel such as the body and joint. The user can make a scenario up by combining the actors. The Action List contains information for arranging and executing the actors. Since the shipbuilding process is a kind of event-based sequence, all simulation models were configured using Discrete EVent System Specification (DEVS) formalism. The proposed method was applied to simulations of various operations in shipyards such as lifting and erection of a block and heavy load lifting operation using multiple cranes.

The exchangeable battery electric bus is an eco-friendly public transportation vehicle. Due to the technological limitation, however, it should repeatedly change batteries with charged ones. The unmanned battery exchangeable electric bus being studied in Korea can exchange batteries automatically by using a battery swapping system. In this paper, we propose an unmanned battery exchangeable electric bus management system. The proposed system provides two services: the bus information service and the battery change scheduling service. The bus information service is the existing traditional metropolitan area bus information systems, which inform bus passengers how long they should wait for the buses. Our second service assigns a low-battery bus, which needs to change the batteries, to the battery swapping system, which stores fully-charged batteries. To validate the proposed system, we model the system by using the DEVS formalism. The simulation result shows that the proposed system provides the services properly.

This paper presents vulnerability identification method based on meaning which is making use of the concept of atomic vulnerability. Also, we are making use of decomposition and specialization processes which were used in DEVS/SES to get identifiers. This vulnerability representation method is useful for managing and removing vulnerability in organized way. It is helpful to make a relation between vulnerability assessing and intrusion detection rules in lower level. The relation enables security manager to response more quickly and conveniently. Especially, this paper shows a mapping between Nessus plugins and Snort rules using meaning based vulnerability identification method and lists usages based on three goals that security officer keeps in mind about vulnerability. The contribution of this work is in suggestion of meaning based vulnerability identification method and showing the cases of its usage for the rule integration of vulnerability assessment and intrusion detection.
A magnetically levitated vehicle (Maglev) system is under commercialization as a new transportation system in Korea. The Maglev is operated by an unmanned automatic control system. Therefore, the plan of train operation should be carefully established and validated in advance. In general, when making a train operation plan, statistically predicted traffic data is used. However, a traffic wave often occurs in real train service, and demand-driven simulation technology is required to review a train operation plan and service quality considering traffic waves. We propose a method and model to simulate Maglev operation considering continuous demand changes. For this purpose, we employed a discrete event model that is suitable for modeling the behavior of railway passenger transportation. We modeled the system hierarchically using discrete event system specification (DEVS) formalism. In addition, through implementation and an experiment using the DEVSim++ simulation environment, we tested the feasibility of the proposed model. Our experimental results also verified that our demand-driven simulation technology can be used for a priori review of train operation plans and strategies.
