  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of elementary science instruction applying a Brain-Based Evolutionary (ABC-DEF) approach using Rapid-cycling Brassica rapa (RcBr) on the interests of elementary school students. For this study, two elementary school classes in Seoul and one elementary school class in Gyeonggi-do were selected. Comparison group received instruction using textbook and teacher's guidebook. A class taught using only brain-based evolutionary approach is experimental group A, and a class taught through brain-based evolutionary approach using RcBr is experimental group B. In order to analyze the quantitative differences about the interests of students, three kinds of test were administered to the students: 'Applied Unit-Related Interests', 'Follow-up Interests' and 'Interests in the observation material'. To get more information, qualitative data such as portfolios and interviews were analyzed. The major findings are as follows. First, for the test of applied unit-related interests, a statistically significant difference was found between comparison group and experimental group A, and between comparison group and experimental group B. As the results of interviews, the students have shown that the intensified exploration activities on plant in Brain-Based Evolutionary approach applied to experimental groups A and B had a positive effect. Second, for test of follow-up interests, we classified the students' follow-up interests into three types: extended-developed-deepened (EDD) type, simply expanded-maintained (SEM) type, and stopped or decreased (SD) type. Both experimental group A and experimental group B showed the highest percentage of EDD. Also, observation journal applying the evolutionary process (DEF) showed a positive effect on the students' interest. Comparison group showed the highest percentage of SEM. Third, for test of applied interests in the observation material, a statistically significant difference was found between comparison group and experimental group A, and comparison group and experimental group B. Experimental group B using RcBr showed the highest average score, while experimental group A showed a higher score than comparison group. Based on these findings, educational implications of Brain-Based Evolutionary approach and using RcBr are discussed.

  • This study was designed to evaluate the mutagenicity and the primary mutagenic mechanism of chloropropanols by using various genotypes of E. coli WP2, E. coli TK and E. coli GW series strains. Chloropropanols showed the low mutagenic activities in E. coli WP2s and WP2 establishing the following order; 2,3-DCP> 3-MCPD>1,3-DCP. As compared with E. coli WP2s, the decrease of mutagenic activity and the increase of survival rate in E. coli WP2 $(WP2s\;uvrA^+)$ suggest that DNA lesions produced by chloropropanols could be easily removed by excision-repair system. From the diminution of mutagenic activity and survival rate in E. coli CM611 (WP2s lexA), it was confirmed that the mutagenesis by chloropropanols was dependent on the SOS-repair system. This fact could be also confirmed from the result that both the mutagenic activity and survival rate in E. coli TK610 (umuC) were much lower than those in E. coli TK603 $(umuC^+)$. In the experiment to examine the possibility that chloropropanols might have effects on the LexA of SOS response negative regulator, there was no variation in ${\beta}-galactosidase$ activities of E. coli GW1105 $[lexA3\;(Ind^-)]$ and GW1107 [lexA51 (Def)] by addition of the compounds, indicating that chloropropanols do not have any effects on the LexA, itself.

  • Purpose : Perinatal asphyxia is an important cause of neonatal mortality and subsequent lifelong neurodevelopmental handicaps. Although many treatment strategies have been tested, there is currently no clinically effective treatment to prevent or reduce the harmful effects of hypoxia and ischemia in humans. Erythropoietin (Epo) has been shown to exert neuroprotective effects in various brain injury models although the exact mechanisms through which Epo functions are not completely understood. This study investigates the effect of Epo on hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury and the possibility that its neuroprotective actions may be associated with iron-mediated metabolism. Methods : HI brain injury was produced in 7-day-old rats by unilateral carotid artery ligation followed by hypoxia with 8% oxygen for 2 h. At the end of HI brain injury, the rats received an intraperitoneal injection of 5,000 units/kg erythropoietin. Random premedication with iron, deferoxamine, iron-deferoxamine, or saline were performed 23 d before HI brain injury. The severity of the brain injury was assessed at 7 d after HI. Results : Single Epo treatment post-HI brain injury reduced the gross and histopathological findings of brain injury. Iron premedication did not increase the incidence or severity of the injury as measured by the damage score. Deferoxamine administration before HI brain injury improved the brain injury as compared to no treatment or Epo treatment. Conclusion : These findings indicate that Epo provides neuroprotective benefits after HI in the developing brain. These findings suggest that Epos neuroprotective actions may involve reducing iron in tissues that mediate the formation of free radicals.

  • In order to clarify the effect of radiation on the mouse jejunal crypt cells by combined administration of administration and radiation and also to evaluate the enhancing effect of adriamycin, the authors performed this study by delivering single irradiation of 1,000 to 1,600 rad to the whole abdomen of mice by cobalt-60 teletherapy unit. In combination with adriyamycin treatment groups, the drug was administered as single dose of 10 mg/kg either 2 hours before or 4 hours after graded single dose,900 to 1,400 rad, of irradiation. The authors studied the quantitative changes of intestinal crypt cells by microcolony survival assay technique and the morphological changes of small intestinal villi by scanning electron microscope in mice following to combined therapy with adriamycin and irradiation, The average number of jejunal crypts per circumference was $130{\pm}16$ in control group. The mean lethal dose(Do) of each irradiation alone and combined therapy groups 2 hours before and 4 hours after irradiation, were 160, 170, and 170 rad in cell survival curves, respectively. The dose effect factor(DEF) of adriamycin in each groups of pre-irradiation and post-irradiation were 1.19 and 1.26, respectively. The conical shaped villi were noted on 1,200 rad in irradiation alone group and 1,000 rad in combined groups. For the proper clinical application we must be careful of the radiation injury to small bowel when the anticancer chemotherapy and radiation therapy to the abdomen and pelvic area are used as combined therapeutic modality.

  • A ring R is called left morphic if $$R/Ra{\simeq_-}l(a)$$ for every $a{\in}R$. Equivalently, for every $a{\in}R$ there exists $b{\in}R$ such that $Ra=l(b)$ and $l(a)=Rb$. A ring R is called left quasi-morphic if there exist $b$ and $c$ in R such that $Ra=l(b)$ and $l(a)=Rc$ for every $a{\in}R$. A result of T.-K. Lee and Y. Zhou says that R is unit regular if and only if $$R[x]/(x^2){\simeq_-}R{\propto}R$$ is morphic. Motivated by this result, we investigate the morphic property of the ring $$S_n=^{def}R[x_1,x_2,{\cdots},x_n]/(\{x_ix_j\})$$, where $i,j{\in}\{1,2,{\cdots},n\}$. The morphic elements of $S_n$ are completely determined when R is strongly regular.

  • The movement of in-situ walls has become very important as construction in large cities moves upward, instead of outward. Tall structures typically have deep excavations not on1y to provide extra space for parking, but also to reduce the potential settlement of the building. These large excavations require a robust bracing system to resist the lateral earth pressures as the depth increases. Methods to predict deflections of the retaining systems are of utmost importance because wall movements allow potentia1 settlement of adjacent structures. Case studies will be analyzed and measured waI1 def1ections will be compared with predictions from empirica1ly derived charts.

  • The systems such as the railway control system, satellite control system and nuclear power plant control system are the safety critical systems because the failure of them could lead to risk significant events. These softwares of digital systems must follow the life cycle process from the beginning of software development to guarantee their safety and reliability. The NRC(Nuclear Regulatory Commission) Reg Guide of nuclear fields, the RTCA/DO-178B standard which is used to acquire the certification for software in industrial aero field in European Union and United State, the DEF STAN 00-55 standard for the safety of electronic weapon in England, the IEC 601-1-4 for medical equipment and the IEC 62279 for railway system recommended the development life cycle. This paper introduces the development process and compares each other. Also it indicates applicable development criteria for the software of systems related to railway fields and describes the detailed procedure of development criteria. We describe the procedure to make the software development criteria in nuclear filed. For the software development related to railways, the process from plan phase to maintenance phase must be satisfied. The safety and reliability is guaranteed through these standards.

  • Some digital partical response continuous phase modulation signals such as 3RC, 3SRC, 4SRC, and TFM have cconstant envelope characteristics and compact power spectra. However, their bit error rates in fast fading environments are too high when a simple frequency detection is used. This is due to high inter symbol interference resulting from adjacent bits. The improvement of BER performance by using DFE(Decision Feedback Equalization) to cancel the ISI of one adjacent bit is theoretically investigated in this paper. Numerical resuls are presentes to compare the BER performance of frequency detection with and without decision feedback equalization.
