  • Compared to the past decades, in recent decades, environmental and hygienic conditions in the Republic of Korea have improved along with socioeconomic developments, and the incidence of most infectious diseases, especially vaccine-preventable diseases, has greatly decreased due to active immunization with the developed level of health care. However, the incidence of some diseases has been increasing, and new diseases have been emerging. To cope with such changes actively, the government put the "Law for Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases" into effect; this law was entirely revised on December 30, 2010. In this report, I review the past and recent status of infectious diseases in the Republic of Korea, following the introduction of this law, on the basis of data in the "National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System", which had been accumulated between the years 1960 and 2010.

  • Long-lived Small Modular Reactors are being promoted as an innovative way of catering to emerging markets and isolated regions. They can be operated continuously for decades without requiring additional fuel. A novel configuration of long-lived reactor core employs a mixed neutron spectrum, providing an improvement in nonproliferation metrics and in safety characteristics. Starting with a base sodium reactor design, moderating material is inserted in outer core assemblies to modify the fast spectrum. The assemblies are shuffled once during core lifetime to ensure that every fuel rod is exposed to the thermalized spectrum. The Mixed Spectrum Reactor is able to maintain a core lifetime over two decades while ensuring the plutonium it breeds is below the weapon-grade limit at the fuel discharge. The main drawbacks of the design are higher front-end fuel cycle costs and a 58% increase in core volume, although it is alleviated to some extent by a 48% higher power output.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine changes in the growth rates and the degree of shell bioerosion exhibited by endolithic organisms of the Japanese scallop family, Patinopecten (Mizuhopecten) yessoensis, on the coast of Furugelm Island (Peter the Great Bay, northwest of East Sea = Sea of Japan) over the last three decades. The areas studied are affected by lumen (Tumangang) River run-off, which is enriched by organic matter and polluting agents. It was found that the linear growth rates of the Japanese scallops living along the coasts of Furugelm Island have decreased over the last three decades. The degree of bioerosion of scallop shells has significantly increased for the same period. These phenomena may be explained by a gradual increase in bottom sediment silting, organic enrichment and pollution of the areas being studied. It was found that the degree of scallop shell bioerosion increased with the scallop's age. At present, In each age group, the shells of the scallops sampled from the muddy sand showed greater erosion than the shells of individuals collected from the sandy substrate.

DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO WELDING TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION

  • Some confusion in the terminology concerning the weld quality and its assurance seems caused by the different practises currently in use around the world. Qualified welding personnel are not automatically certified personnel. Education and training are the tools to obtain qualification. Flexibility in training and education seems logical and the most cost-effective way to obtain qualified personnel. A third party seems essential for issuing recognised Certificates. Manufacturers of welded products continue to face increased demands and concerns regarding weld quality. The following are the main conditions influencing weld quality: $\bigcirc$ Establishing reliable productions procedures and tests that meet the requirements of established codes and standards. $\bigcirc$ Finding qualified welding personnel capable of reliably carrying out established welding procedures. The issue of hiring and keeping skilled welding personnel has been a crucial consideration for manufacturers worldwide for the past few decades. It will continue to be a concern for decades to come.

  • In this paper some of the important trends in the spacecraft technology development have been discussed. Trends of higher satellite radiate power, which involves higher TWTA powers and antenna reconfiguration, and Ka-band (30/20 G $H_{z}$) utilization are discussed. Evolutionary trends in satellite communications in general have demonstrated immense potential for meeting the evolving nees and challenges regarding provision of global telecommunications during over past two decades. Their promise for the coming decades as we enter the 21st century may far surpass our imagination. The expansion of fixed satellite service market will depend upon more inelligent spacecraft and a network of more cost effective small earth stations. Radiation hardened microwave analog technologies and high speed digital technologies are getting ready to meet the challenge posed by future markets. At present commercial satellite communications are going through a trasition period.d.

  • This research examined two decades of the U.S. used clothing exports to the world. All countries (209) were classified into four groups based on the level of economic development. Between 1996 and 2012, U.S. used clothing exports shifted away from low-income economies to high-income economies. For the first time, our research demonstrated that the majority of used clothing discarded by American consumers is exported to high-income economies instead of poorest nations of the world. Next, used clothing exports and imports by volume and value in seven high-income countries were analyzed. The high-income countries not only exported but also imported significant amount of used clothing, which indicates a growing demand for worn apparel in developed nations. The demand might be at least partially attributed to the popular vintage clothing trend and increasing consumer environmentalism. Implications regarding development and implementation of a new classification system of worn clothing and recommendations for future research are presented.

  • It is now more than two decades since the AIDS epidemic began with a cluster of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in a community of homosexual men. Since then, many other infections have been characterized as opportunistic infections secondary to HIV infection. These include, but are not limited to, infections with Toxoplasma gondii, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), and Cryptococcus neoformans. Over the last two decades, there have been dramatic improvements in diagnosis, prevention and treatment of all these infections. As a result, in North America and Western Furope the rates of opportunistic infections secondary to AIDS have decreased substantially. We will review these common opportunistic infections below.

  • Flocculation is a widely used phase separation technique in industrial unit processes and is typically observed in many natural flow systems. Advances in colloidal chemistry over the past decades has vastly improved our understanding of this phenomenon. However, in many practical applications, process engineering still lags developments in colloidal science thereby creating a gap in knowledge. While significant progress has been made in environmental process engineering research over the past decades, there is still a need to align these two inter-dependent fields of research more closely. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the flocculation mechanism from empirical and theoretical perspective, discuss its practical applications, and examines the need and direction of future research.

  • As the construction industry has been increasingly complex, aging workers, hard-working avoiding young generation, foreign workers having language problem for the past decades, delivering of construction qualified workers has been a rising problem. This misalignment between the complex jobs and the number of skilled workers will continue to be in issue that the construction industry will face for following decades. Construction field workers who are working outside in uncontrollable condition unlike manufacturing industry are exposed to easily construction safety accident. There are so many efforts to prevent and control the construction accident. However, the relationships between the construction works and construction safety accident has not been well dealt and investigated based on objective accident data except for the qualitative study through interview, delphi and so on. Therefore this study analyzes job risk matrix exposed to safety accidents based on statistic data for 20 years from Korean Occupational Safety & Health Agency in order to prevent the construction field accidents.

  • Radio frequency (RF) and microwave power is one of the key quantities in the framework of electromagnetic measurement standards. Therefore, the stability of the power standard is essential to users' reliable measurements in various areas. Coaxial and waveguide thermistor mounts are used as transfer standards of RF and microwave power. Over decades, the effective efficiencies of thermistor mounts have been measured using coaxial and waveguide microcalorimeters in the frequency range of 10 MHz-40 GHz. The measurement uncertainty of the effective efficiency is evaluated. Results show that the power standards have been well maintained within the measurement uncertainty.
