  • This paper describes electric field analysis and design of direct current arresters for electric traction vehicles. Generally, DC arresters are used to protect the electric traction to limit the overvoltage invading into its inner electrical circuits. We could proposed operating voltage(Uc), the rated voltage(Ur). Finally maxwell 2D simulator based on the boundary element method was also introduced in order to verify the reliability of the DC arresters.

  • In this paper a statcom is developed to improve the power quality in a dc traction system. The proposed statcom can be used as both inverter and active filter. As an active filter, it can compensate harmonic distortion and reactive power and as an inverter, it can recycle regenerative energy caused by decelerating trains. The simulation results are carried out by using PSCAD/EMTDC software.

  • In general, Diode rectifier has been applied to DC traction power supply system. Diode has some characteristics which is voltage drop in inverse proportion of load because of non-controlled switch, and cannot flow a current in reverse bias. So, voltage drop occurs frequently, and regenerated power cannot use in substation. The PWM rectifier is able to control output voltage constantly to reduce voltage drop and to use regeneration power without additional inverter. This paper proposes analysis algorithm for DC traction power supply system with PWM rectifier.

  • In this paper, a unified regenerative inverter and control algorithm are proposed in order to perform regenerative action and active power filter action. While the regenerative mode of traction, it works as regenerative inverter to reduce a excessive power of DC bus line and the powering mode of the traction, it works as active power filter to compensate ac current distortion, power factor, and voltage unbalance. In the paper, a regeneration inverter used PWM DC/AC inverter algorithm. And an active power filter used p-q theory. We are carrying out a mode analysis of DC traction system similar to actual system with MG-set and experimenting with prototype model. Through the simulation and experiment, we were proving the regeneration inverter operation which suggested in this paper.

  • This paper presents on capacity design of DC-fed-traction system. The system is introduced including a characteristics of train, feeding network configuration, and design method of substation arrangements. Optimal design procedures is described, and program for capacity computation of the system is presented using the nodal equation, K.C.L, K.V.L, Ohm's law and superposition theory. For the proof of the proposed algorithm, we accomplished the simulation of DC traction system for HA-Nam LRT. By considering whole component in DC traction system the conclusion will be much precise.

  • In this paper, we proposed a selection and application recommendations of ZnO arresters for DC electric traction vehicles. To decide the Continuous Operating Voltage($U_C$), the Rated Voltage($U_r$), and the Nominal Discharge Current(In), we measured and analyzed system voltages and surge currents flowing the arrester installed on a DC electric traction vehicle under running state. System voltages measured up to 1,800 V in 1,500 V-system, and surge currents were recorded up to 3 times per a running-service-route and their magnitudes were ranges of $150A{\sim}2kA$. From these results and a standard EN50163, we could proposed $U_C$, $U_r$, and In available for the 1,500 VDC electric traction vehicles.

  • In DC 1500V electric traction substations, diode rectifiers are commonly used to supply stable DC power with electric train sets. However, it operates in the first quadrant of the voltage-current plane and thus needs regenerative inverters which transfer the surplus regenerative power caused by regenerative braking of electric train sets into the grid. In order to select the proper capacity and installation position of regenerative inverter, it needs to investigate the consumed and regenerative energy of the electric traction substations in advance. This paper presents an analysis of regenerative energy in two substations operating in Seoul line 2 and Kwangju line 1. DC line voltage and feeder currents are measured for a day to calculate consumed and regenerative power for four feeders. We calculated an amount of regenerative energy consumed in other feeders and estimated the cost reduction in energy consumption due to the reuse of regenerative energy.

  • There are several protective relays used to protect DC traction power supply system for DC railway. These relays, however, are made by different manufactures and they have different ways for their operations. Therefore, there are difficulties for cooperation between the devices or the devices and an upper system. In order to increase interoperability and stability of the system composed of devices made by different manufactures, IEC 61850 international standards are applied to design logical nodes for modeling protective elements used in protective relays.

  • In DC traction substation with 12-pulse diode rectifiers, the DC line voltage tends to rise above noload voltage because it can't absorb the regenerative power caused by electric brakes of train. To solve this problem, an IGBT regenerative inverter should be installed and recycles the surplus regenerative power by delivering it. to the supply grid. In this paper, the DC traction substation equipped with a IGBT regenerative inverter is studied using computer simulation. Matlab/simulink is used to simulate the operation of regenerative inverter which injects the regenerative power into the supply grid and stabilizes the DC line voltage. It is confirmed that the high quality regenerative power is delivered to the supply grid thorough computer simulation.
