  • Heavy chemical industries have nonlinear loads including elecrolyzers. AC-DC converters are the most widely used in an elecrolysis in a chemical plant. The electrolysis consists of AC-DC converter groups connected in parallel at the DC side. The converter operations cause harmonic currents and create distortions on the sinusoidal voltage of the AC power system. This paper provides an in depth analysis on harmonics field measurement for the electrolyzer loads and harmonics assessment by the international harmonic standards IEC 61000-3-6 and IEEE 519-1992.

  • In this study, we investigated the color change of the normal light gray granite as the high value color granite. By coating the metal catalyst liquid on the surface of granite stone, the metal particles were penetrated into the granite and the color of granite was changed permanently through the annealing treatment. To increase penetration depth into the granite, we used DC (direct current) bias. Two kinds of bias were used such as DC bias and pulse DC bias. And the penetration time was changed as 30 and 60 min. In all cases, the color granite were successfully obtained. Regardless of the catalyst reaction time, the penetration depth was increased by using the bias treatment. We obtained a penetration depth of 21 mm with the DC pulse bias during 60 min.

  • Nowadays, in metropolitan railroad, DC feeding system is being generally applied. In order to reduce damage of electro-chemical corrosion caused by stray current and leakage current, in DC feeding system, rail is used as negative-polarity return conductor for traction load current. However, it has problem of rail potential increase and there are no adequate measures to prevent it in domestic. The rise of rail potential leads to damage for human and equipments. To solve the problems, this paper presents fundamental theory and related standards about rail potential increase. And then, we analyzed field testing data and simulated a variety of operations by using PSCAD/EMTDC as an analysis program of power system. In addition, this paper suggests rail potential limit device and addresses how to the device. To verify the effect, simulation of DC feeding system before and after the application of the device is carried out in various cases.

  • In recent years, multilevel technology has become an effective and practical solution in the field of moderate and high voltage applications. This paper discusses an APF with a three-level NPC inverter. Obviously, the application of such converter to APFs is hindered by the problem of the voltage unbalance of DC capacitors, which leads to system instability. This paper comprehensively analyzes the theoretical limitations of the neutral-point voltage balancing problem for tracking different harmonic currents utilizing current switching functions from the space vector PWM (SVPWM) point of view. The fluctuation of the neutral point caused by the load currents of certain order harmonic frequency is reported and quantified. Furthermore, this paper presents a close-loop digital control algorithm of the DC voltage for this APF. A PI controller regulates the DC voltage in the outer-loop controller. In the current-loop controller, this paper proposes a simple neutral-point voltage control method. The neutral-point voltage imbalance is restrained by selecting small vectors that will move the neutral-point voltage in the direction opposite the direction of the unbalance. The experiment results illustrate that the performance of the proposed approach is satisfactory.

  • Some of DC actuators used in home automation, office automation, medical equipment and automotive systems require a position sensor. In low power applications, the introduction of such a transducer remarkably increases the whole system cost, which justifies the development of sensorless position estimation techniques. The well-known AC motor drive sensorless techniques exploiting the fundamental component of the back electromotive force cannot be used on DC motor drives. In addition, the sophisticated approaches based on current or voltage signal injection cannot be used. Therefore, an effective and inexpensive sensorless position estimation technique suitable for DC motors is presented in this paper. This technique exploits the periodic pulses of the armature current caused by commutation. It is based on a simple pulse counting algorithm, suitable for coping with the rather large variability of the pulse frequency and it leads to the realization of a sensorless position control system for low cost, medium performance systems, like those in the field of automotive applications.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of a brushless DC motor considering an advanced $165^{\circ}$ 12 step control for a cost reduction. The advanced 12 step control that extends the conduction angle $150^{\circ}$ can improve the output of the motor. The optimal design considering the improved output power of the motor is proposed by reducing the volume of rotor, stator and permanent magnet using response surface method. The proposed design satisfied the performance requirements and efficiency improvement of the conventional motor and reduced the volume about 3.5%. The feasibility of the optimal design is proved by the electromagnetic field analysis using the finite element method.

  • Properties of hafnium nitride (HfN) coatings are affected by deposition conditions, most often by the sputtering technique. Appropriate use of different magnetron sputtering modes allows control of the structural development of the film, thereby enabling adjustment of its properties. This study compared properties of HfN coatings deposited by direct current magnetron sputtering (dcMS), mid-frequency direct current magnetron sputtering (mfMS), and inductively coupled plasma-assisted magnetron sputtering (ICPMS) systems. The microstructure, crystalline, and mechanical properties of these HfN coatings were investigated by field emission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and nanoindentation measurements. HfN coatings deposited using ICPMS showed smooth and highly dense microstructures, whereas those deposited by dcMS showed rough and columnar structures. Crystalline structures of HfN coatings deposited using ICPMS showed a single δ-HfN phase, whereas those deposited using dcMS and mfMS showed a mixed δ-HfN and HfN0.4 phases. Their performance were increased in the order of dcMS < mfMS < ICPMS, with ICPMS achieving a value of 47.0 GPa, surpassing previously reported results.

  • FRP(Fiber Reinforced Plastic) support insulators for DC(direct current) were developed and their electrical and mechanical characteristics were investigated. Electrical tests were carried out to measure flashover voltages under common use frequency condition. Tensile and bending tests were performed for the mechanical characteristics. The test results showed that FRP support insulators have superior voltage resistances and strengths to porcelain insulators. Field test also is carried out to measure adaptation and to compensate the defect. The test result showed that a new product has no defect in electrical and mechanical.

  • In a modern control field, a control engineer who has theoretical backgrounds with some practical knowledge is demanded. That is to say, an engineer who can understand and operate the various parts such as modeling, simulation, system analysis, signal processing, statistics, and hardware is required. In order to prove the theoretical backgrounds and operate various hardwares, a lot of experimental devices for students are designed in universities. Since the conventional experimental devices are manufactured abroad and the prices of the devices are too high, it is difficult to have. If a low cost experimental device can be developed, it will be very useful for a control engineering education. In Ibis paper, an experimental rig which has two control inputs and three sensor outputs to control the end point of a flexible beam is designed and manufactured. This rig can be used for a control field education.

  • For motor operation at low speeds and loads, torque pulsation by the cogging torque is often a source of vibration and control difficulty. In this paper, the magnetic field of a motor is calculated by finite element method. The periodic cogging torque is determined using Maxwell stress method and time stepping method, and then decomposed using fourier series expansion, The purpose of this paper is to characterize design parameters on the cogging torque and to design a permanent magnet motor with a cogging torque less vulnerable to vibration, without sacrificing the motor performance. The design parameters include stator slot width, permanent magnet slot width, airgap length and magnetization direction. A new design with a less populated frequency spectrum of the cogging torque is proposed after characterizing individual effect of design parameters. Magnet pole edge shaping, by gradually increasing the cogging torque with reduced higher harmonics.
