Effects of Physical Characteristics on a Nutrient-Chlorophyll Relationship in Korean Reservoirs

  • This study was performed to evaluate effects of physical characteristics of both watershed and reservoir on nutrient-chlorophyll relationship in Korean reservoirs. Simple linear models were developed with published data in Korea including 415 reservoirs and 11 multi-purpose dams, and physico-chemical parameters of reservoirs and characteristics relationship of models were analyzed. Theoretical residence time in Korean reservoirs was strongly correlated with the ratio of TA/ST (drainage area + surface area / storage volume) in the logarithmic function. As a result of monthly nutrients-chlorophyll-a regression analysis, significant Chl-a-TP relationship appeared during May~July. The high Chl-a yields per total phosphorus appeared during this time (R$\^$2/=0.51, p<0.001, N= 1088). Chlorophyll-a demonstrated much stronger relationship with TP. than TN. Seasonal algal-nutrient coupling were closely related with N:P ratio in the reservoir water, and it was, in turn, dependent on the monsoon climatic condition (precipitation). Based on the results of regression analysis and high N:P ratio, a major limiting factor of algal growth appeared to be phosphorus during this time. Unlikely TA/ST ratio, DA/SA ratio (drainage area f surface area) was likely to influence directly on the nutrient-Chl-a relationship, indicating that if storage volume and inflowing water volume were the same, algal biomass could be developed more in reservoirs with large surface area. Thus, DA/SA ratio seemed to be an important factor to affect the development of algal biomass in Korean reservoirs. With low determination coefficient of TP-Chl-a relationship, our findings indicated not only nutrient (phosphorus) but also other physical factors, such as DA/SA ratio, may affect algal biomass development in Korean reservoirs, where actual residence time appears to be more closely related to reservoir surface area rather than storage volume.

  • 이상으로 농업기반공사에서 운영중인 193개소의 농업용 저수지에 있어서 저수지의 물리적 인자가 저수지의 수질에 미치는 영향에 대하여 고찰해 본 결과, 우리나라의 농업용 저수지는 외국의 자연호수에 비하여 유역면적이 상대적으로 크기 때문에 많은 영양염류의 유입가능성이 큰 것으로 나타났으며, 유역면적에 대한 호소 표면적 비율이 비슷한 외국호소와 비교하여 볼 때 체류기간이 작은 것으로 나타났다. 유역면적에 대한 저수지 면적 비율(DA/SA)과 수리학적 체류기간(td)과의 회귀분석 결과 관계식은 $t_d\;=\;42.21(TA/ST)^{-1.0}\;(R^2\;=\;0.89)$로써 역비례의 관계를 나타내었다. 유효저수량을 $t-d$로 나누어 일유출량을 구한 결과 관계식은 $Q_d\;TA/42.21$로써 일 평균 유입량은 총 면적에 선형적인 비례관계를 나타내었으며, Modified Tank 모형에 의한 예측치와 매우 유사한 값을 나타내었다. 연간 표면적당 인 부하율은$4\;gT-Pm^{-2}yr^{-1}$ 이하가 전체 농업용 저수지의 52%를 차지하여 가장 일반적인 연간 표면적당 인 부하율이었으나, DA/SA의 비율이 100 이상의 경우에는 $4\;gT-Pm^{-2}yr^{-1}$이하가 차지하는 비율이 0%, $10\;gT-Pm^{-2}yr^{-1}$ 이상이 차지하는 비율이 100%로서, DA/SA의 비율이 커질수록 연간표면적당 인 부하율은 일반적으로 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 수심은 Chl-a의 농도에 영향을 주는 물리적인자인데 일반적으로 수심이 깊을수록 Chl-a의 농도는 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 이러한 경향은 Chl-a의 농도가 $10\;{\mu}g/l$이하와 $40\;{\mu}g/l$이상에서 뚜렷하게 구분이 되었으며, 일반적으로 우리 나라의 농업용 저수지 계획시 수심을 깊게 할수록 저수지 부영양화 관리에는 유리할 것으로 나타났다. 호소내에서의 총인 농도를 종속변수로 하고 배출부하량과 유효저수량, 저수지 표면적, 유역면적에 대한 저수지 표면적을 독립변수로 하여 회귀분석한 결과 관계식은 $C\;=\;6.03{\times}W^{0.68}{\times}V^{-0.53}{\times}SA^{-0.21}{\times}(DA/SA)^{-0.50}$이며 $R^2$가 61%의 설명력을 나타내어 농업용 저수지의 인 농도 경향을 예측하는데 사용 가능할 것으로 생각된다. 이상의 결과로서 우리 나라 농업용 저수지의 수질예측에 있어는 복잡한 유출모형이나 유역모형, 호소수질모형 등을 사용하기보다는 본 연구에서와 같이 기존자료를 분석하여 도출한 경험적 관계식을 사용하면 비교적 적은 노력으로도 상당히 신뢰성있게 예측하여 수질관리에 도움이 될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

  • The fatigue crack growth behavior of the SA516/70 steel which is used for pressure vessels was examined experimentally at room temperature, $-60^{\circ}C$,$-80^{\circ}C$ and $-100^{\circ}C$ with stress ratio of R=0.05, 0.1 and 0.3. Fatigue crack propagation rate da/dN related with stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$ was influenced by stress ratio in stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) with an increase in ${\Delta}K$. The resistance of fatigue crack growth at low temperature is higher compared with that at room temperature, which is attributed to the extent of plasticity-induced by compressive residual stress according to the cyclic loads. Fractographic examinations reveal that the differences of the fatigue crack growth characteristics between room and low temperatures are mainly explained by the crack closure and the strengthening due to the plasticity induced and roughness induced.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared hem ASTM SA516 which was used for pressure vessel plates for room and low temperature service. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, -3$0^{\circ}C$, -6$0^{\circ}C$, -8$0^{\circ}C$, -l$0^{\circ}C$ and -l2$0^{\circ}C$ and in the range of stress ratio of 0.1, 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. At the constant stress ratio, the threshold stress intensity factor range ΔK$_{th}$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth ( Region I ) and stress intensity factor range ΔK in the stable of fatigue crack growth ( Region II) was increased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region. The straight line slope relation of logarithm da/dN - ΔK in Region II, that is, the fatigue crack growth exponent m increased with descending temperature at the constant stress ratio. It assumed that the fatigue crack growth rate da/dN is rapid in proportion to descend temperature in Region H and the cryogenic-brittleness greatly affect a material with decreasing temperature.e.greatly affect a material with decreasing temperature.

The fatigue crack propagation rate da/dN related with the stress intensity factor range $\Omega\textrm{K}$ was influenced by the stress ratio within the stable growth of fatigue crack(Region II) with an increase in $\Omega\textrm{K}$. The resistance to the fatigue crack growth at high temperature is higher in comparison with that at room temperature, and the resistance attributed to the extent of plasticity-induced by compressive residual stress according to the cyclic loads. SA 516-70 압력용기용강의 저온피로 크랙전파 특성에 관한 연구 (Fatigue Crack Propagation Characteristics in SA 516-70 Steel for Pressure Vessels at Low Temperature)

  • Fatigue crack propagation rates and characteristics of the SA516-70 steel which is used for the low temperature pressure vessels, were studied in the room temperature of $10^{\circ}C$ and low temperature ranges of $-10^{\circ}C,\;-30^{\circ}C,\;-50^{\circ}C,\;and\;-70^{\circ}C$ with stress ratio of R=0.05. The obtained experimental results are as follows; 1) In the logarithmic relationship between the fatigue crack propagation rate(da/dN) and stress intensity factor K, the linear relationship was obtained up to da/dN > $8{\times}10^3$ mm/cycle in the same of room temperature, but in low temperature case, the relationship was extended to the range of low crack propagation rate. 2) The lower limit stress intensity factor of SA516-70 ${\Delta}K_{th}\;was\;23MPa\sqrt{m}$ and in the case of low temperature $-50^{\circ}C\;and\;-70^{\circ}C$, the crack propagation rate da/dN which showed a linear relation, reached rapidly to the ${\Delta}K_{th}$. As the results, the crack propagation rates of $-50^{\circ}C\;and\;-70^{\circ}C$ were lower than that of room temperature and according to the testing temperature the rates were decreased rapidly to the ${\Delta}K_{th}$. 3) On the relationship between the stress intensity factor ${\Delta}K$ and the track propagation cycle, the stress intensity factors of low cycle region was rapidly increased at low temperature, but ${\Delta}K$ was increased rapidly at room temperature of high cycle. 4) On the relationship between the fatigue crack propagation rate and cycle, the fatigue crack propagation rate showed higher gradient in the room temperature than the low temperature due to the increment in ductility at low temperature.

  • This paper is concerned with a particular fracture mechanics parameter ${\Delta}K_{th}$, known as the 'threshold stress intensity range', or 'fatigue threshold'. This threshold ${\Delta}K_{th}$ constitutes, as it were, a hinge between the notion of crack initiation and the notion of crack growth. It has often been thought that, like the endurance limit, it could be an intrinsic criterion of the material. The study was conducted on a SA-508 pressure vessel steel used in the nuclear power industry. This material exhibits a typical threshold effect in the range of the crack growth rates which were determined; that is, below approximately $da/dN=10^{-6}mm/cycle$, the slope of the da./dN versus ${\Delta}K$ curve is almost vertical. The value of ${\Delta}K_{th}$ was determined at a growth rate of $10^{-7}$ mm/cycle according to the ASTM Standard for threshold testing. The fatigue threshold values are in the range 21 $kg/mm^{3/2}$ to 12 $kg/mm^{3/2}$ depending on the stress ratio effect.
