  • The recombination of oxygen and nitrogen atoms on the surfaces of two coating m materials of the Space Shuttle Orbiter (SSO), a reaction cured glass (RCG) and a spinel (C742), was investigated. The recombination probability, $\gamma$, i.e., the probability that atoms im p pinging on the surface will recombine, was measured in a diffusion reactor. Value of $\gamma$ for oxy g gen atom on C742 ($3 {\times} 10^{-2}$) was much higher than that on RCG ($4 {\times} 10^{-4}$) at the tempera t ture of SSO re-entry (ca. 1000K). The higher value of $\gamma$ on C742 indicates a higher number d density of active sites than RCG. It suggests the possibility of designing less active surfaces by i inducing the desorption at lower temperature.

  • DEM (Digital Elevation Model) is a useful dataset which represents the earth surface. Beside many applications, production and frequent update of DEM is a costly task. Recently global satellite based DEMs are available which has huge potential for application. To check the accuracy, this study compares two global DEMs: AW3D30 (Advanced Land Observing Satellite World 3D 30m) and SRTM30 (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Global 30m) with reference resampled LiDAR DEM 30m in a test area around Chuncheon, Korea. The comparison analysis was based on statistics of each DEM, their difference, profiles, slope, basin and stream orders. As a result, it is found that SRTM30 and AW3D30 were much similar but inconsistent in the test area compared to the LiDAR30 DEM. In addition, SRTM30 shows less difference with LiDAR30 compared to the AW3D30 DEM. But, DEMs should be very carefully examined for area which has temporal or season changes. For basin and stream analysis, global DEMs can be used only for regional scale analysis not local large scales.

  • In the early 1960s, US Air Force lost missile launch bases during ICBM development by a defect in the missile design and operation plan. U.S. DoD realized the limitation of the existing accident prevention method. Therefore, the weapon development required system safety activity, and procurement projects of U.S. DoD applied MIL-STD-882(System Safety). Development projects of U.S. DoD more emphasized the importance of system safety after the space shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986. Currently, Airworthiness certification for military aircraft uses system safety to minimize accidents. The domestic defense aviation R&D projects also use the system safety for the airworthiness certification. However, non-aviation weapon R&D projects rarely applied system safety. This paper presents a system safety application method for domestic weapon R&D projects by studying the U.S. military standards/organizations and domestic defense aviation projects.

  • The authors investigated an overhead shuttle (OHS) system for automatic transferring the liquid crystal display (LCD) panels. The constructed tracks of OHS system include the linear and curve regions and have been installed on the ceiling to transfer the cassette of LCD glass along the closed-loop and open-loop tracks. In this study, the OHS system was implemented by a proposed linear motor to solve encoder installation and the system cost problems of the long distance transfer system. In addition, we utilized a new algorithm of the position detection and a new control algorithm for driving linear motor. The newly developed control algorithm was demonstrated from both a computer simulation and an experimentation, indicating that the highly reliable and speedy transfer system can enhance the LCD panel productivity of commercial OHS system.

  • Background: Rehmanniae radix preparata is a medicinal herb widely used in Asian countries, to replenish Yin and Vital Essence through strengthen the kidney function. In Oriental Medicine the brain has physiological relationship with the Vital Essence. And central nerve system (CNS) is also refered to as 'Sea of the Vital Essence'. So if the Vital Essence is strong it will nourish the brain and memory will all be keen. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 7 to 14 days treatment with Rehmanniae radix preparata (3.4 g /100 g, per os) on retention performance of rats in a passive avoidance situation. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained on a one-trial passive avoidance task using a two-way shuttle box by giving a foot shock. They were tested for retention of 6h, 24h, 72h, 168h, and 336h after training. Results: Rehmanniae radix preparata treated rats showed a increased performance in retention test as compared to saline at 6hr (P<0.05) and 24hr (P<0.05). Conclusion: These data suggest that Rehmanniae radix preparata treatment can improve memory in the rat.

  • In the present paper, an infinite-depth unified theory is applied to the computation of the linear and second-order hydrodynamic forces on slender bodies. No forward speed is assumed, which is valid for some types of ships, like FPSOs and shuttle tankers. Strip theory solution, which is essential for the extension to theory is extended to unified theory, was obtained using NIIRD program developed at MIT. The linear theory is extended to the computation of the second-order mean-drift forces and moment. Furthermore, Aranha's formular is applied to the prediction of wave drift damping coefficients. From this study, it is proved that unified theory provides an accuracy comparable with 3D panel method for the second-order forces as well as the linear solution with much less computational effort.

  • To clone genes related UK-58,852 production, genomic DNA of strain Actinodura roseorufa was used for the construction of genomic library using pOJ446 cosmid vector. The genomic library was screened rising dehydratase PCR product and eryA gene as a DNA hybridization probe. pHD54 was isolated, which contained an approximately 35kb of inserted DNA. BamHI, SmaI and sonicater fragments hybridized to eryA probe. All of pHD54 BgmHI, SmaI and sonicater fragments were subcloned into pGEM7 and some fragments which hybridized to eryA probe were sequenced. The nucleotide sequence was analysed using BLAST program. The sequence identities were observed in KS,AT, KR, ER and PKS loading domains. Also oxidoreductase showed similarity to rifamycin module10, and dTDP-D-glucose 4,6 dehydratase and TDP-D-glucose synthase involved in biosynthesis of sugar showed similarity to Streptomyces argillaceus.

  • This keynote presentation covers the subject of intelligent systems development for monitoring and control in various NASA space applications. Similar intelligent systems technology also has applications in terrestrial commercial applications. Discussion will be given of the general approach of intelligent systems and description given of intelligent systems under prototype development for possible use in Space Shuttle Upgrade, in the Experimental Crew Return. Vehicle, and in free-flying space robotic cameras to provide autonomy to these spacecraft with flexible human intervention, if desired or needed. Development of intelligent system monitoring and control for regenerative life support subsystems such as NASA's human rated Bio-PLEX test facility is also described. A video showing two recent world's firsts in real-time vision-guided robotic arm and hand grasping of tumbling and translating complex shaped objects in micro-gravity will also be shown.

  • A cryptic plasmid, pMBLR00, from Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides KCTC 3733 was isolated, characterized, and used for the construction of a cloning vector to engineer Leuconostoc species. pMBLR00 is a rolling circle replication plasmid, containing 3,370 base pairs. Sequence analysis revealed that pMBLR00 has 3 open reading frames: Cop (copy number control protein), Rep (replication protein), and Mob (mobilization protein). pMBLR00 replicates by rolling circle replication, which was confirmed by the presence of a conserved double-stranded origin and single-stranded DNA intermediates. An Escherichia coli-Leuconostoc shuttle vector, pMBLR02, was constructed and was able to replicate in Leuconostoc citreum 95. pMBLR02 could be a useful genetic tool for metabolic engineering and the genetic study of Leuconostoc species.
