A Zero Sequence Voltage Injection Method for Cascaded H-bridge D-STATCOM

  • Load variations on a distribution line result in voltage fluctuations at the point of common coupling (PCC). In order to keep the magnitude of the PCC voltage constant at its rated value and obtain zero voltage regulation (ZVR), a D-STATCOM is installed for voltage correction. Moreover, the ZVR mode of a D-STATCOM can also be used to balance the source current during unbalanced loading. For medium voltage and high power applications, a D-STATCOM is realized by the cascaded H-bridge topology. In the ZVR mode, the D-STATCOM may draw unbalanced current and in this process is required to handle different phase powers leading to deviations in the cluster voltages. Zero sequence voltage needs to be injected for ZVR mode, which creates circulating power among the phases of the D-STATCOM. The computed zero sequence voltage and the individual DC capacitor balancing controller help the DC cluster voltage follow the reference voltage. The effectiveness of the control scheme is verified by modeling the system in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The obtained simulations are further validated by the experimental results using a dSPACE DS1106 and five-level D-STATCOM experimental set up.

  • In this paper, we construct a Virtual D-STATCOM using a number of grid-connected inverters installed in solar and wind power plants and compensate the reactive power of the cable depending on the reactive power of the load of the power distribution system and the distance to the power distribution line We propose a method to compensate the reactive power of the PCC stage near the substation without installing the existing single large capacity D-STATCOM. The proposed method is verified by Matlab Simulink simulation and its operation principle and reactive power compensation.

  • 전기로와 같은 고압, 대용량의 산업응용분야에서 전원 안정화를 목적으로 하는 변동부하에 의해 발생되는 정상분 및 역상분의 무효전력을 보상하기 위한 고성능의 STATCOM의 개발이 요구되었다. 본 논문에서는 POSCO ICT에서 개발한 22.9kV 5MVA STATCOM(static synchronous compensator)에 대해 기술하였다. 개발된 STATCOM은 다단 멀티레벨 컨버터(Cascaded Multilevel Converter) 방식으로 Delta 구성하였으며, 각상당 12개의 H-Bridge Inverter가 직렬로 구성되어 25 레벨의 전압을 출력한다.

  • A STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM) is a shunt connected voltage source converter (VSC) based FACTS controller using Gate Turn Off (GTO) power semiconductor devices employed for reactive power control. The operation principal is similar to that of a synchronous condenser. A typical application of a STATCOM is voltage regulation at the midpoint of a long transmission line for the enhancement of power transfer capability and/or reactive power control at the load centre. This paper presents the modeling of STATCOM with twenty four pulse three level VSC and Type-1 controller to regulate the reactive current or the bus voltage. The performance is evaluated by transient simulation. It is observed that, the STATCOM shows excellent transient response to step change in the reactive current reference. While the eigenvalue analysis is based on D-Q model, the transient simulation is based on both D-Q and 3 phase models of STATCOM (which considers switching action of VSC).

  • Transmission System Operators are governed by operational security standards that are applied in real time. During system disturbances, the System Operators must rely on the installed protection and control equipment, prior to human intervention. New power electronic solutions bring rapid and repeatable responses to disturbances, which will help System Operators to guarantee a stable system. Last year, Alstom completed the world's first competitively bid STATCOM to support the voltage on National Grid's 400kV network that supplies London and the Southeast from the north of the UK. It is rated ${\pm}75MVAr$ and forms part of a Static Var System (SVS) with a total rating of 0 to 225MVAr. This paper will describe the reasons for its size, location, its chain-link configuration and give examples of its operating performance. The paper will also describe the features that allow this STATCOM to deliver much more than reactive compensation in support of a wider transmission service objective, as system conditions require.

  • 본 논문에서는 RTDS 시뮬레이터를 이용하여 현재 개발중인 STATCOM 시스템의 제어기의 성능을 검증하였다. STATCOM 제어기와 연계하기위한 RTDS 시뮬레이터의 구성방안과 RTDS 내부에 GPC 카드를 이용한 STATCOM 인버터 모델을 개발하였으며, 간단한 계통을 구성하여 제어기-시뮬레이터 연동시험을 실시하여 제어기의 성능을 검증하였다.

  • A static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) applied to rapidly changing, highly unbalanced loads such as electric arc furnaces (EAFs), requires both positive-sequence and negative-sequence current control, which indicates fast response characteristics and can be controlled independently. Furthermore, a delta-connected STATCOM with cascaded H-bridge configuration accompanying multiple separate DC-sides, should have high performance zero-sequence current control to suppress a phase-to-phase imbalance in DC-side voltages when compensating for unbalanced load. In this paper, actual EAF data is analyzed to reflect on the design of current controllers and a pioneering zero-sequence current controller with a superb transient performance is devised, which generates an imaginary -axis component from the presumed response of forwarded reference. Via simulation and experiments, the performance of the positive, negative, and zero-sequence current control of a cascaded H-bridge STATCOM for EAF is verified.

  • STATCOM은 전력전자 기반의 전압형 인버터를 이용한 무효 전력 보상장치로써 우수한 전압 제어 능력과 빠른 동작 특성, 그리고 운용 및 유지/관리의 유연성으로 인해 기존에 사용되던 무효 전력 보상장치들을 빠르게 대체하고 있다. 효성중공업에서는 국내 최초로 100MVA STATCOM을 개발하여 한전 실 계통에 설치/운용한 바 있고 이 경험을 바탕으로 최근 논의되고 있는 제주 50MVA STATCOM의 개발에 착수하였다. 본 논문에서는 이 프로젝트와 관련된 배경을 설명하고 연구 과정 중에 수행된 제주 전력 계통의 STATCOM 설치 효과 모의 결과에 대해서 소개하고자 한다.

  • This paper describes the theory and experimental result of scaled model of STATCOM. The STATCOM, a solid-state voltage source inverter coupled with a transformer, is tied to a transmission line. A STATCOM inject an almost sinusoidal current of variables magnitude, at the pont of connection. This injected current is almost in quadrature with the line voltage, thereby emulating an inductive or capacitive reactance at the point of connection with the transmission line.
