  • In order to investigate the species composition and the colony density of ants in Mt. Namsan, Seoul, 39 quadrats were installed in 13 vegetations, 443 colonies of ants were collected from June, 1989 to October, 1990. As the result, 4 subfamilies, 23 genera, 28 species was confirmed. Among them, Cerapachys humicola $O_{GATA}$ is new to Korean fauna along with the subfamily Cerapachinae. For the species composition of ant communities in each vegetation, Robinia pseudoacacia vegetation(containing 3 subfamilies, 14 genera, 15 species-53.6% of all colonies collected in Mt. Namsan) and Quercus mongolica vegetation (3 subfamiles, 12 genera, 14 species -50%) showed relatively rich composition, while Platunus orientalis vegetation (3 subfamilies, 3 genera, 3 species) showed the simplest composition. Colony density was the highest in Prunus sargentii vegetation (7.875 colony /$m^2$) and the lowest in Platunus orientalis (1.000 colony/$m^2$). The relative density of Paratrechina flavipes proved to be the highest (RD = 0.422) and that of Cerapachys humicola $O_{GATA}$ Massor aciculatus was the lowest (RD = O. 002 respectively). In the analysis of the similarity of ant communities between each vegetation by S¢rensen's coefficient, Prunus sargentii was very similar to Sorbus alnifolia (0.745) and Pinus densiflora (0.736), but had the lowest similarity to Metasequoia glyptostoboides and Chamaecyparis pisifera vegetation (0.164 respectively). Dominance of ants in each vegetation analyzed by Simpson'formula was found to be high in Platunus orientalis ($\lambda$ = 0.393) and Sorbus alnifolia ($\lambda$ = 0.392) and the lowest in Metasequoia glyptostroboides vegetation($\lambda$= 0.067). The analysis of diversity by reverse Simpson's coefficient revealed that it was high in Metasequoia glyptostroboides ($d_s$ = 14.925), Pinus rigida ($d_s$ = 7.874) and was the lowest in Platunus orientalis vegetation ($d_s$ = 2.545). Evenness calculated by using d. and $d_{max}$(maximal diversity) was high in Metasequoia glyptostroboides ($E_s$ = 0.714) and Chamaecyparis pisifera vegetation ($E_s$ = 0.624). On the contrary, Quercus mongo/ica vegetation had the lowest value of evenness ($E_s$ = 0.182).

  • With the advent of ubiquitous computing society, many advanced technologies have enabled wireless sensor networks which consist of small sensor nodes. However, the sensor nodes have limited computing resources such as small size memory, low battery life, short transmission range, and low computational capabilities. Thus, decreasing energy consumption is one of the most significant issues in wireless sensor networks. In addition, numerous applications for wireless sensor networks are recently spreading to various fields (health-care, surveillance, location tracking, unmanned monitoring, nuclear reactor control, crop harvesting control, u-city, building automation etc.). For many of them, supporting security functionalities is an indispensable feature. Especially in case wireless sensor networks should provide a sufficient variety of security functions, sensor nodes are required to have more powerful performance and more energy demanding features. In other words, simultaneously providing security features and saving energy faces a trade-off problem. This paper presents a novel energy-efficient security architecture in an IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless sensor network called the Hybrid Adaptive Security (HAS) framework in order to resolve the trade off issue between security and energy. Moreover, we present a performance analysis based on the experimental results and a real implementation model in order to verify the proposed approach.

  • A compact and broadband $4\times1$ array antenna was developed for 3G smart antenna system testbed. The $4\times1$ uniform linear away antenna was designed to operate at 1.885 to 2.2GHz with a total bandwidth of 315MHz. The array elements were based on the novel broadband L-probe fed inverted hybrid E-H (LIEH) shaped microstrip patch, which offers 22% size reduction to the conventional rectangular microstrip patch antenna. For steering the antenna beam, a commercial variable attenuator (KAT1D04SA002), a variable phase shifter (KPH350SC00) with four units each, and the corporate 4-ways Wilkinson power divider which was fabricated in-house were integrated to form the beamforming feed network. The developed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 17.32% $(VSWR\leq1.5)$, 21.78% $(VSWR\leq2)$ with respect to center frequency 2.02GHz and with an achievable gain of 11.9dBi. The design antenna offer a broadband, compact and mobile solution for a 3G smart antenna testbed to fully characterized the IMT-2000 radio specifications and system performances.

  • A single juvenile pomacentrid specimen (5.9 mm standard length) was collected from the Korea Strait in October 2010. The specimen is characterized by punctate-stellate melanophores scattered on the operculum and dorso-ventral region in front of the caudal peduncle, the lack of melanophores on the posterior end of the anal fin base, the presence of 14 spines and 14 soft rays on the dorsal fin, and the presence of 2 spines and 12 soft rays on the anal fin. A molecular analysis based on mitochondrial DNA 16S rRNA sequences showed that this specimen is closely related to adult Chromis mirationis (d = 0.002), but that it differs from Chromis notata (d = 0.017). Juvenile C. mirationis differ from juvenile C. notata in having no melanophores on the posterior end of the anal fin base. We propose a new Korean name, "tti-ja-ri-dom" for C. mirationis.

  • Purpose: Many Korean college students suffer from physical inactivity and mental health problems. However, it has not been sufficiently reported how this lack of exercise and health-related behavior affect their health. The present study was performed to identify the relationships among physical activity level, health-promoting behavior, and physiological variables in Korean undergraduate and graduate students. Methods: Participants were 115 undergraduate and graduate students from one university in Seoul. The Pearson's correlation analysis was performed using SPSS for Windows. Results: Physical activity level had significant positive correlations with health-promoting behavior (r=.32, p=.001) and exercise self-efficacy (r=.25, p=.008), and health-promoting behavior had a significant correlation with depression (r=-.33, p<.001) and exercise self-efficacy (r=.44, p<.001). Additionally, physical activity level had significant correlations with triglyceride (r=-.20, p=.034) and vitamin D (r=.20, p=.029) levels. The high density cholesterol level had significant negative correlations with systolic blood pressure (r=-.33, p<.001), diastolic blood pressure (r=-.29, p=.002), and vitamin D (r=-.20, p=.035) levels. Conclusion: Physical activity level or health-promoting behavior had significant relationships with the health status of college students. Strategies need to be developed to improve health-promoting behaviors among college students.

  • Fine structures of some Korean woods were investigated by X-ray diffraction methods. Relative crystallinity measured by the Segal's method and by the area method was $53{\pm}6%$ and $43{\pm}8%$ in softwoods, and $54{\pm}5%$ and $45{\pm}5%$ in hardwoods, respectively. The crystallite dimension in width was $3.11{\pm}0.45nm$ in softwoods and $3.22{\pm}0.25nm$ in hardwoods. In the longitudinal direction, the dimension was $12.79{\pm}0.89nm$ in softwoods and $12.60{\pm}0.72nm$ in hardwoods. The d-spacings of (200) in equatorial and (004) in meridional layers were about 0. 397 run and about. 0.260 nm, respectively. As a result, relative crystallinity, crystallite dimensions and d-spacings of (200) did not show any differences between the softwoods and hardwoods. The ratio of integrated intensities of (002) and (004), however, showed some differences between the softwoods and hardwoods. Namely, it was $0.101{\pm}0.027$ in softwoods and $0.138{\pm}0.037$ in hardwoods.

  • In this paper, the single E-plane structure which is inserted in the slot of waveguide tube for good yield has been proposed and analyzed by the variational method. A CAD program for designing of the narrow-band waveguide bandpass filters has been developed by the passband correction method with filter synthesis theory. Using the developed CAD program, 0.02dB equi-ripple Chebyshev type 5-section bandpass filter is designed at the center frequency of 3.82GHz, fabricated with tunable structure. The experimental results show good agreements with the theoretical results.

  • The Korean lumpsucker, "Do-chi", reported previously as Eumicrotremus orbis, was reinvestigated on the basis of specimens collected from Korea, Japan, and the USA. Morphological and genetic analyses showed that "Do-chi" corresponds to Eumicrotremus taranetzi and clearly differs from E. orbis. Eumicrotremus taranetzi is readily distinguishable from E. orbis by its large, high spiny tubercles with weak, small or no prickles (small, low spiny tubercles with distinct prickles in E. orbis) and 3-4 pairs of spiny tubercles in the dorsal rows (five pairs in E. orbis). We compared partial sequences (466 bp) of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I genes of "Do-chi" and other Eumicrotremus species. "Do-chi" and E. taranetzi were clustered by the smallest Kimura two-parameter genetic distance (d = 0.000-0.002) and were clearly separated from E. orbis (d = 0.035-0.037). Therefore, our results suggest that the scientific name of the Korean lumpsucker, "Do-chi" should be changed to E. taranetzi.

  • The contribution of the non-$180^{\circ}C$ domains to the electric-field-induced strains (EFI-strains) of PZT ceramics was evaluated by an XRD method and by an interferometric method. The XRD intensity ratio of 200 and 002 diffraction peaks of tetragonal PZT was measured under strong electric fields. The amount of the $90^{\circ}$ domain reorientation was evaluated and the strain due to the domain reorientation was calculated. It was confirmed that the EFI-strain of PZT ceramics was equal to the sum of the strain calculated from the d$_33$ constant determined by the resonance-antiresonance method and the strain due to the $90^{\circ}$ domain reorientation. The amount of the $90^{\circ}$domain reorientation has a linear relation with the c/a ratio in the "soft" PZT ceramics. A Mech-Zehnder interferometer was constructed to measure the EFI-strains vs. electric-field curves of PZT ceramics as a function of frequency. The EFI-strain vs. electric-field curve showed a hysteresis due to the effect of the non-$180^{\circ}$ domain reorientation when the applied voltage was high and its frequency was low. The apparent piezoelectric constant increased from the d$_33$ value determined by the resonance-antiresonance method with decreasing frequency. This deviation was attributed to the non-$180^{\circ}$ domain contribution.tribution.
