  • Fifty-five specimens of Octopus longispadiceus, belonging to the family Octopodidae, were collected for the first time from the East Sea of Korea and identified by DNA barcoding. This species is characterized by its long right third arm and ligula, the presence of enlarged suckers in the mature male, small white spots on the mantle, head, and arms, and no cirrus above the eye. A molecular analysis of the partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene showed that these specimens are all the same species and have the smallest genetic distance with O. longispadiceus (Kimura- two-parameter distance = 0.002-0.003). A new Korean name, "Bal-mun-eo" is proposed for this species.

  • A sea cucumber was collected from Gonghyeonjin in the East Sea of Korea at a depth of 50 m on 22 June 2011 and was identified as Psolus phantapus (Strussenfelt, 1765). This species belongs to the family Psolidae of the order Dendrochirotida based on morphological characteristics and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequence analysis. Psolus phantapus, which widely distributes in the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans, is newly recorded in the Korean fauna. Two Psolus species including the previously reported P. squamatus are recorded in the East Sea of Korea.

  • Some euryalid specimens were collected with fishing nets from Mipo, Gyungsangnamdo and Aewol, Jejudo Island, Korea. They were identified as Gorgonocephalus eucnemis (${M\ddot{u}ller}$ & Troschel, 1842), belonging to family Gorgonocephalidae of order Euryalida, which was new to the Korean fauna. Their molecular analyses were done with newly intended COI primers of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene for the accurate molecular identification. The Korean G. eucnemis was coincident with this NCBI species as a result of Blast analysis, which showed the 99% similarity. In the current study, three Gorgonocephalus species have been reported from Korea.

  • Ten specimens of Brama dussumieri (family Bramidae) were collected from waters off Jeju Island, Busan, and Gangneung, Korea, during 2013-2014. The specimens were characterized by having 58-64 lateral line scales and 13-15 gill rakers. An analysis of 567 base pair sequences of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I showed that sequences in our ten specimens are concordant with those of B. dussumieri from the USA, India, and Japan, although with slight differences (genetic distance = 0.000-0.018). Brama dussumieri was distinguished from the most similar species, Brama japonica, by the number of lateral line scales (57-65 in B. dussumieri vs. 65-75 in B. japonica) and the number of gill rakers (13-15 in B. dussumieri vs. 17-20 in B. japonica). We propose the new Korean name "Wae-sae-da-rae" for B. dussumieri in Korea.

  • A new record of Nomeus gronovii is described here based on a single specimen collected off the Jeju Island, Korea. The species has a blotched and spotted pattern on the body, 41 vertebrae, and a large pectoral fin with a white lower part. A molecular analysis of the partial (500 bp) cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene showed that this specimen is closely related to specimens of N. gronovii collected in South Africa (Kimura-two-parameter distance = 0.006-0.012). A new Korean name, "Ga-neun-dong-gang-yeon-chi", is proposed for this species.

  • The Korean nudibranch faunal study has been conducted since 2011 and five species including Dermatobranchus otome Baba, 1992, Mexichromis festiva (Angas, 1864), Noumea nivalis Baba, 1937, Hoplodoris armata (Baba, 1993), and Okenia hiroi (Baba, 1938) were newly reported with re-descriptions and figures. Also, Noumea purpurea Baba, 1949 was re-described with illustrations because previous records for this species were given without a description. Two congeneric species in the genus Noumea could be distinguished by ground color, dorsal markings, color of the mantle edge and gills, and mantle and dorsal marking. In addition, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences of five species were provided for further molecular identification study. Consequently, a total of 43 species have been reported for the Korean nudibranch fauna.

  • In the present study, the first mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) sequence of Sterkiella multicirrata Li et al., 2018 is presented. To begin with, this species has been also morphologically recorded from South Korea, and this study was performed using genomic DNA of the Korean population. The newly obtained COI sequences of S. multicirrata were identical. And the inter-specific variation between S. multicirrata and S. histriomuscorum was noted at 14.3%. These values correspond well with the results of previous studies. However, because there are very few available COI sequences of stichotrichian in GenBank, it is concluded that continuous accumulation of data is needed for further study.

  • Thirty five juveniles belonging to the genus Collichthys were collected using a bag net at Gang-wha-do, in the eastern Yellow Sea, between July and September, 2012, and identified using combined genetic and morphological methods. We sequenced 316 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I of 35 individuals, of which 22 individuals were identified as Collichthys niveatus (12.9-47.6 mm in SL) and 13 as Collichthys lucidus (13.4-40.3 mm SL). Morphologically, the number of occipital crests, an important taxonomic character during the adult stage, could not distinguish the two species during the juvenile stage, but the shape of the first anal fin spine clearly distinguished the two species even among juveniles.

  • Two feather mites, Zachvatkinia larica Mironov, 1989 and Ardeacarus ardeae (Canestrini, 1878) are reported for the first time in Korea. Specimens of Z. larica and A. ardeae were collected from the blacktailed gull Larus crassirostris and little egret Egretta garzetta, respectively. The genera Zachvatkinia Dubinin, 1949 and Ardeacarus Dubinin, 1951 are new to this country. Here, we provided morphological descriptions and illustrations of these two species. Additionally, we provide the partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) as DNA barcode markers.

  • Four feather mite species, Grallobia fulicae (Trouessart, 1885), Grallobia gallinulae Gaud, 1968, Grallolichus proctogamus (Trouessart, 1885) and Megniniella gallinulae (Buchholz, 1869), previously unrecorded in South Korea are reported. Specimens of Grallobia fulicae and Grallolichus proctogamus were collected from the eurasian coot, Fulica atra in Cheongju-si. Grallobia gallinulae and M. gallinulae were found on the common moorhen, Gallinula chloropus in Yesan-gun. The genera Grallobia Hull, 1934, Grallolichus Gaud, 1960 and Megniniella Gaud, 1958 are new records for South Korea. Here, we provide illustrations and morphological descriptions of these four feather mite species as well as the partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) as DNA barcodes.
