An automated measurement system for the microwave surface resistance of high-T$_c$ superconductor films

  • A prototype for a highly sensitive, automated measurement system for the microwave surface resistance of high-T$_c$ superconductor films was set up, and tested by measuring the microwave surface resistances of high-T$_c$ YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$(YBCO) films at the frequency of about 19.6 GHz and the temperature of 30 K ${\sim}$ 90 K. An open-ended TE$_{011}$ mode sapphire-loaded cylindrical cavity resonator was used as the measurement probe, where YBCO films were used as the endplates of the cylindrical cavity. The characteristics of the measurement system include functions to display the unloaded ${\varrho}$ and the resonant frequency of the TE$_{011}$ mode resonator as well as the microwave surface resistance of the YBCO films, all simultaneously as a function of temperature. Applicability of the measurement system for investigating the homogeneity in the microwave properties of large high-T$_c$ superconductor films is discussed.

단층원통형 고온초전도도체의 교류손실 특성 (AC Loss Characteristics of a Single-layered Cylindrical High Temperature Superconductor)

  • The AC loss is an important issue in the design of the high temperature superconductor (HTS) power cables and fault current limiters. In these applications, a cylindrical HTS conductor is often used. In commercialization of these apparatuses, AC loss is a critical factor but not elucidated completely because of complexities in its measurement, e.g. non-uniform current distribution and phase difference between currents flowing in an individual HTS tape. We have prepared two cylindrical conductors composed of a Bi-2223 tape with different critical current density. In this paper, the AC loss characteristics of the conductors have been experimentally investigated and numerically analyzed. The result show that the measured losses for two conductors are not dependent on both arrangements and contact positions of a voltage lead. This implies that most of loss flux is only in the conductors. The loss for the Bi-2223 conductor with low critical current density is in good agreement with the calculated loss from Monoblock model, whereas the loss measured for the Bi-2223 conductor with high critical current density doesn't coincide with the loss calculated from the Monoblock model. The measured loss is also different from numerically calculated one based on the polygon model especially in low transport current.

국부용융성장법으로 제조된 Sm이 첨가된 YBCO 초전도체의 용융온도 및 성장 속도에 따른 미세구조 (Melt growth and superconducting properties of Sm-doped YBCO super-conductor by zone melting method)

  • Sm 원소가 첨가된 $(Sm/Y)_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_{7-x}$[이하 (Sm/Y)1.8] 고온초전도체를 국부용융성장법을 이용해 대기 중에서 용융성장실험을 하였다. 초기 (Sm/Y)1.8 초전도체 시편은 rubber 몰드를 이용해 냉간정수압성형(CIP) 과정을 거쳐 길이 방향 원통형상으로 제조되었다. 이렇게 얻어진 (Sm/Y)1.8 초전도체는 용융온도 및 성장속도에 따라 광학현미경, TEM그리고 SQUID magnetometer를 이용해 미세구조 및 초전도특성을 평가하였다. 이 결과 (Sm/Y)1.8 초전도체의 최적의 용융온도 및 성장속도는 $1085^{\circ}C$에서 3.5mm/hr로 나타났다. 특히 일방향으로 용융성장된 (Sm/Y)1.8 초전도체의 광학현미경 및 TEM에 의하 미세구조 관측 결과, 초전도상인 (Sm/Y)123 matrix내에 비초전도상인 (Sm/Y)211 inclusions이 균질하게 분포되어 있는 것이 관측되었다. 초전도특성을 평가한 결과 용융성장된 (Sm/Y)1.8초전도체는 90K에서 임계온도가 시작되어 77K이상의 온도에서 포화되는 특성을 보였다.

Stability analysis of an insulationless HTS pancake coil under the magnitude of external magnetic field

  • An HTS (high temperature superconducting) coil without insulation has been investigated since a metallic insulation was suggested in the mid-1980s. The advantage of an insulationless HTS pancake coil is that it is more stable than an insulated HTS pancake coil. This paper focuses on the various characteristics of the insulationless HTS pancake coil related with stability, especially under the external magnetic field. Because HTS pancake coil may be influenced by the external magnetic field in a real operational environment of electrical devices. First, charge-discharge test was performed for the characteristics evaluation of the insulationless HTS pancake coil as compared with insulated HTS pancake coil in liquid nitrogen at 77 K. Based on the experiment results, characteristics evaluation of the insulationless HTS pancake coil was implemented under the external magnetic field. In order to carry out the experiment, we have fabricated a cylindrical solenoid coil to apply the magnetic field. The various characteristics of the insulationless HTS pancake coil were evaluated for charge-discharge and over-current conditions. This paper proves that the insulationless HTS pancake coil is more stable than the insulated HTS pancake under the external magnetic field.

  • (YNdSm)-Ba-Cu-O system high Tc composite superconductors were directionally grown by zone melting process, having large temperature gradient, in air atmosphere. Cylindrical green rods of $(YNdSm)_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_x$ [(YNS)1.8]composite oxides by CIP (cold isostatic pressing) method using rubber mold were fabricated. The microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated by XRD, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. The size of nonsuperconducting $(YNdSm)_2BaCuO_5$ inclusions of the melt-textured (YNS)1.8 sample with $CeO_2$ additive were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the superconducting (YNS)1.8 matrix. (YNS)1.8 samples, with / without $CeO_2$ additive, showed an onset $T_c{\geq}90K$ and sharp superconducting transition. The critical current density $J_c$ value of the (YNdSm)1.8 superconductor with $CeO_2$ additive were 840 A, $1.2{\times}104A/cm^2$ in 77 K, 0 Tesla by direct current transport method.

  • 존멜팅법을 이용해서 $(YSmNd)_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_{7-x}$계 고온초전도체를 대기 중에서 용융성장실험을 하였다. 존멜팅법의 최적용융온도는 $1100^{\circ}C$였으며 성장속도는 3.5 mm/h 였다. 한 방향으로 용융성장 된 (YSN)1.8 초전도체는 XRD, 광학현미경, TEM을 이용하여 미세구조를 관찰하였으며 SQUID magnetometer와 직접전류수송법을 이용해 초전도특성을 평가하였다. 특히 용융성장 된 (YSN)1.8 초전도체의 광학현미경에 의한 미세구조 관측 결과 초전도상인 (YSN)123 matrix내에 비초전도상인 (YSN)211 inclusions이 균질하게 분포되어 있는 것이 관측되었다. 또한 용융성장 된 (YSN)1.8 초전도체는 90 K 이상의 임계온도 특성을 보였으며 액체질소 안에서 직접전류수송법으로 측정한 결과 수송전류 830 A에서 $3.93{\times}10^4$(A/$cm^2$)를 갖는 높은 임계전류밀도 특성을 보였다.

  • 초전도전력케이블에서 교류손실은 케이블의 효율을 저하시킬 뿐만 아니라 냉동기비용 증가로 인한 기존 케이블과의 가격경쟁에서 경제성을 저하시키는 주된 요인으로 작용하기 때문에 이의 상용화에 앞서 교류손실에 대한 정확한 규명이 되어야 한다. 그러나 다수본으로 구성되는 단층원통형의 고온초전도전력케이블에서 교류손실을 올바르게 평가하는 것은 테이프의 상이한 임계전류, 전압리드의 배열, 전류분포의 불균일성 및 인접한 테이프에 흐르는 전류위상 상이 등 복잡한 영향인자 때문에 매우 난해하다. 본 연구에서는 고온초전도전력케이블과 같은 단층원통형 고온초전도도체를 제작하여 실험적으로 교류손실 특성을 규명하였고, 또한 전류용량이 교류손실 특성에 미치는 영향을 실험적으로 조사하였다. 결과 원통형 고온초전도도체에서 교류손실 특성은 전류용량보다는 임계전류밀도에 더 의존하였다.

A parameter sweep approach for first-cut design of 5 MW Ship propulsion motor

  • This paper presents a conceptual design approach of air-cored synchronous machine with high temperature superconductor (HTS) field winding. With a given configuration of a target machine, boundary conditions are set in the cylindrical coordinate system and analytic field calculation is performed by solving a governing equation. To set proper boundary conditions, current distributions of the field winding and the armature winding are expressed by the Fourier expansion. Based on analytic magnetic field calculation results, key machine parameters are calculated: 1) inductance, 2) critical current of field winding, 3) weight, 4) HTS conductor consumption, and 5) efficiency. To investigate all potential design options, 6 sweeping parameters are determined to characterize the geometry of the machine and the parameter calculation process is performed for each design options. Among design options satisfying constraints including >80 % critical current margin and >95 % efficiency, in this paper, a first-cut design was selected in terms of overall machine weight and HTS conductor consumption to obtain a lightweight and economical design. The goal is to design a 5-MW machine by referring to the same capacity machine that was previously constructed by another group. Our design output is compared with finite element method (FEM) simulation to validate our design approach.
