The continuous circular cylindrical shells are widely used for the high performance structures of aircraft, spacecraft, missile, nuclear fuel rod shell etc.. In this paper, a method for the free vibration analysis of the continuous circular cylindrical shells with the multiple simple supports is developed by using the receptance method. With this method, the vibrational characteristics of the continuous system is analyzed by considering as a combined structure. The system receptance is also derided by the application of the equilibrium of forces and the continuity of displacements at the support points. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated numerically and they are compared with the FEM results to improve the reliability of analytical solution. Numerical results on the 4-equal-span continuous circular cylindrical shell are presented in this paper.
This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling and controller design for a cylindrical shell equipped with MFC actuators. The dynamic model was derived by using Ravleigh-Ritz method based on Donnel-Mushtari shell theory. The boundary conditions at both ends were assumed to be shear diaphragm. To verify the theoretical results, a cylindrical shell structure made of aluminum was built ana tested by using impact hammer. Experimental results show that there are little discrepancies compared to theoretical results because of the boundary conditions at both ends. The MFC actuators were glued to the cylindrical shell in longitudinal and circumferential directions. The PPF controller were designed for lowest two modes and applied to the MFC actuators. The experimental results show that vibrations can be successfully suppressed.
Reliability-based design approaches are needed for cylindrical shell structure whose design and operational experiences are few and which are subjected to external loads of random loads. In designing new type of structure, it is very difficult to evaluate the safety factors due to lack of previous design data and operational experience. To solve the above mentioned problem, much attention is being focussed on rational reliability based design approaches. This paper deals with weight-optional reliability-based design of cylindrical shell structure subjected to structural reliability constraints taking into account of the effect of local buckling and interactive behavior between local and global buckling. Present mentioned is compared with the exiting optional design method based only on safety factors. Numerical simulation reveals that the present method leads to lighter structure (4% reduction in weight compared to the existing optimal design) with the same reliability index. For larger structures with more number of structural members and possible failure modes, the present W0RBD procedure will be an efficient tool in designing cost-effective rationalized economic design.
This paper presents a study of buckling of the multi-vaulted cylindrical shell ("Aster"), under an axial compression alone or combined with an external pressure. This shell which was presented in a recent paper is a self-stiffened structure having a satisfactory behaviour and a higher buckling strength under external pressure than a circular cylindrical shell with the same dimensions. The results of this study emphasize the interest of the behaviour of the "Aster" shell under two other types of loading, revealing an acceptable level of strength which is favorable for an expansion of its use in other areas.

The present article focuses on the thermoelastic deformation behavior of inhomogeneous functionally graded metal/ceramic cylindrical shell structure with multiple perforations using 2D finite element approximation. Here, cylindrical shell structure is considered with single (1×1) and multiple (2×2, 3×3 and 4×4) perforations. The temperature-dependent elastic and thermal properties of functionally graded material are evaluated using Voigt's micromechanical material scheme via power-law function. The kinematics of the proposed model is based on the equivalent single-layer first-order shear deformation mid-plane theory with five degrees-of-freedom. Here, 2D isoparametric finite element solutions are obtained using eight-node quadrilateral elements. The mesh refinement of present finite element model is performed to confirm the appropriate number of elements and nodes for the analysis purpose. Subsequently, a comparison test is conducted to demonstrate the accuracy of present results. In later section, numerous numerical illustrations are demonstrated at different set of conditions by varying structural, material and loading parameters and that confirms the significance of various parameters such as power-law index, aspect ratio, thickness ratio, curvature ratio, number of perforations and temperature on the deformation characteristics of functionally graded cylindrical shell structure.
In this paper, forced vibration of micro cylindrical shell reinforced by functionally graded carbon nanotubes (FG-CNTs) is presented. The structure is subjected to transverse harmonic load and modeled by beam model. The size effects are considered based on strain gradient theory containing three small scale parameters. The mixture rule is used for obtaining the effective material properties of the structure. Based on sinusoidal shear deformation theory of beam, energy method and Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. Applying differential quadrature method (DQM) and Newmark method, the frequency curves of the structure are plotted. The effect of different parameters including, CNTs volume percent and distribution type, boundary conditions, size effect and length to thickness ratio on the frequency curves of the structure is studied. Numerical results indicate that the dynamic deflection of the FGX-CNT-reinforced cylindrical is lower with respect to other type of CNT distribution.
The present paper investigates the simultaneous resonance behavior of spiral stiffened multilayer functionally graded (SSMFG) cylindrical shells with internal and external functionally graded stiffeners under the two-term large amplitude excitations. The structure is embedded within a generalized nonlinear viscoelastic foundation which is composed of a two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak foundation augmented by a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model with a nonlinear cubic stiffness. The cylindrical shell has three layers consist of ceramic, FGM, and metal. The exterior layer of the cylindrical shell is rich ceramic while the interior layer is rich metal and the functionally graded material layer is located between these layers. With regard to classical shells theory, von-Kármán equation, and Hook law, the relations of stress-strain are derived for shell and stiffeners. The spiral stiffeners of the cylindrical shell are modeled according to the smeared stiffener technique. According to the Galerkin method, the discretized motion equation is obtained. The simultaneous resonance is obtained using the multiple scales method. Finally, the influences of different material and geometrical parameters on the system resonances are investigated comprehensively.
For cylindrical shells, the closed-form solutions are confined to the specific boundary and/or loading conditions. Though the finite element method is certainly a powerful solution approach for the structural dynamics problems, it has been well known to provide the solution reliable only in the low frequency region due to the inherent high sensitivities of structual and numerical modeling errors. Instead, the spectral element method has been proved to provide accurate dynamic characteristics of a structure even at the ultrasonic frequency region. Since the wave characteristic of a cylindrical shell becomes identical to that fo a flat plate as the frequency increases, an equivalent plate model (EPM) representing the high-frequency dynamic characteristics of the cylindrical shell is introduced herein. The EPM-based spectral element analysis solutions are compared with the known analytical solutions for the cylindrical shells to confirm the validity of the present modeling approach.
This describes the formulation for the free vibration of joined conical-cylindrical shells with uniform thickness using the transfer of influence coefficient. This method was developed based on successive transmission of dynamic influence coefficients, which were defined as the relationships between the displacement and the force vectors at arbitrary nodal circles of the system. The two edges of the shell having arbitrary boundary conditions are supported by several elastic springs with meridional/axial, circumferential, radial and rotational stiffness, respectively. The governing equations of vibration of a conical shell, including a cylindrical shell, are written as a coupled set of first order differential equations by using the transfer matrix of the shell. Once the transfer matrix of a single component has been determined, the entire structure matrix is obtained by the product of each component matrix and the joining matrix. The natural frequencies and the modes of vibration were calculated numerically for joined conical-cylindrical shells. The validity of the present method is demonstrated through simple numerical examples, and through comparison with the results of previous researchers.

Based on the strain gradient theory (SGT), vibration analysis of an embedded micro cylindrical shell reinforced with agglomerated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is investigated. The elastic medium is simulated by the orthotropic Pasternak foundation. The structure is subjected to magnetic field in the axial direction. For obtaining the equivalent material properties of structure and considering agglomeration effects, the Mori-Tanaka model is applied. The motion equations are derived on the basis of Mindlin cylindrical shell theory, energy method and Hamilton's principal. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is proposed to evaluate the frequency of system for different boundary conditions. The effects of different parameters such as CNTs volume percent, agglomeration of CNTs, elastic medium, magnetic field, boundary conditions, length to radius ratio and small scale parameter are shown on the frequency of the structure. The results indicate that the effect of CNTs agglomeration plays an important role in the frequency of system so that considering agglomeration leads to lower frequency. Furthermore, the frequency of structure increases with enhancing the small scale parameter.
