Soot has a great effect on the formation of PM (Particulate Matter) in D.I. (Direct Injection) Diesel engines. Soot in diesel flame is formed by incomplete combustion when the fuel atomization and mixture formation were poor. Therefore, the understanding of soot formation in a D.I. diesel engine is mandatory to reduce PM in exhaust gas. To investigate soot formation in diesel combustion, various measurements have been performed with laser diagnostics. In this study, the relative soot diameter and the relative number density in a DJ. engine was measured by using LIS (Laser Induced Scattering) and LII (Laser Induced Incandescence) methods simultaneously which are planar imaging techniques. And a visualization D.I. diesel engine was used to introduce a laser beam into the combustion chamber and investigate the diffusion flame characteristics. To find the optimal condition that reduces soot formation in diesel combustion, various injection timing and the swirl flow in the cylinder using the SCV (Swirl Control Valve) were applied. From this experiment, the effects of injection timing and swirl on soot formation were established. Effective reduction of soot formation is possible through the control of these two factors.

The most typical fuel control devices of motorcycle engines have carburetors, they are simple in structure and reliable in work. Most of the motorcycle engines have used carburetors in the fuel system, but the fuel economy and the emissions of those engines are bad when we compared with automobile engines. According to stricter emission regulations and higher requirements for fuel economy, the application of the carburetor on the motorcycle engines would be limited. In this paper, we studied about the ECU of motorcycle engine controled by indirect method. A new engine system was designed and experiments were carried out. The experimental results for both carburetor type and ECU type were compared. Maximum torque of $1.053kg{\cdot}m$ at 6500rpm was measured. The engine torque controled using ECU was increased by $10\%$ compared with the carburetor type.

In this study two issues are considered, one is to develop a pneumatic servomechanism using a direct-connected circuit between inlet and outlet, the other is to design two kinds of advanced controllers such as fuzzy and PID controllers for a fingering system. Besides, the application of the advanced controllers to the newly proposed servomechanism is presented. The procedure of this study is composed of following 6 steps : [Step 1] Structuring of a control system; [Step 2] Development of a pneumatic circuit for the servomechanism ; [Step 3] Characteristic analysis of the valve and cylinder systems ; [Step 4] Determination of optimal parameters of the PID controller ; [Step 5] Design of a fuzzy controller and parameter tuning; and, [Step 6] Experimental analysis of fuzzy and PID controllers. Experimental results show that the newly proposed pneumatic servomechanism has good performance and, not only the performance of the fuzzy controller is better than that of the PID controller but also the fuzzy controller fits well to the control of the pneumatic servomechanism.

The efforts of EGR on performance and emissions were investigated in this study. The engine used for the tests was a six-cylinder, 11 liter, and turbo-charged, heavy-duty diesel engine with a low pressure route ECR system. The volume of recirculated gas was controlled by a manually operated valve which was installed between the turbine outlet and compressor inlet. The experiments were performed at various engine speeds and loads while the ECR rates were set at 4% and 8%. Exhaust emissions with EGR system were compared with the baseline emissions.

The EHA(Electro-hydrostatic Actuator) reveals completely different characteristics from the conventional valve-controlled Electro-hydraulic actuators. In this paper, its mathematical model including nonlinear elements was derived to be verified by experiments. Based on this, a simulation program was developed for the EHAs consisting of an electric motor driven hydraulic pump, pipe lines and a cylinder. The influence of important design parameters such as peak motor torque and rotational inertia moment of the hydraulic pump on control performance was investigated, where the test condition was intentionally selected so that the motor torque was saturated during the transient phase. As a result, design requirements for improving the control accuracy under full speed operation conditions of the EHAs were investigated.
With the aim of achieving half the regulated value of EURO-3 Emission Regulations, an ultra low emission motorcycle has been developed based on a motorcycle with an 1800 $cm^3$, horizontal opposed 6-cylinder engine. For the fuel supply system, an electronically controlled fuel injection system was applied. For the emission purification system, three-way catalysts, a feedback control system with a LAF(Linear Air-Fuel ratio) sensor, and a secondary air induction system were applied. To reduce CO and HC emissions during cold starting, an early catalyst activation method combining RACV(Rotary Air Control Valve) and retarded ignition timing was applied. After the catalyst activation, air-fuel ratio was controlled to maximize the purification ratio of the catalyst according to vehicle speed. For the air-fuel ratio control system, the LAF sensor was used. Furthermore, fine adjustment by the LAF feedback control reduced torque fluctuation due to the air-fuel ratio change. As a result, smooth ride feeling was maintained. Owing to these technologies, half the regulated value of EURO-3 has been achieved without any negative impact to the large-scaled motorcycles' drivability. This paper presents the developed ultra low emission technologies including the control method using an LAF sensor.
A new combustion method of high compression ratio SI engine was studied and proposed in order to achieve high thermal efficiency, comparable to that of CI engine. Compression ratio of SI engine is generally restricted by the knocking phenomena. A combustion chamber profile and a cranking mechanism were studied to avoid knocking with high compression ratio. Because reducing the end-gas temperature will suppress knocking, a combustion chamber was considered to have a wide surface at the end-gas region. However, wide surface will lead to large heat loss, which may cancel the gain of higher compression ratio operation. Thereby, a special cranking mechanism was adapted which allowed the piston to move rapidly near TDC. Numerical simulations were performed to optimize the cranking mechanism for achieving high thermal efficiency. An elliptic gear system and a leaf-shape gear system were employed in numerical simulations. Livengood-Wu integral, which is widely used to judge knocking occurrence, was calculated to verify the effect for the new concept. As a result, this concept can be operated at compression ratio of fourteen using a regular gasoline. A new single cylinder engine with compression ratio of twelve and TGV(Tumble Generation Valve) to enhance the turbulence and combustion speed was designed and built for proving its performance. The test results verified the predictions. Thermal efficiency was improve over 10% with compression ratio of twelve compared to an original engine with compression ratio of ten when strong turbulence was generated using TGV, leading to a fast combustion speed and reduced heat loss.
The basic elements in a rotary-type scroll compressor are two identical spiral scrolls containing refrigerant gas. The pressure variations in the compression pockets of a scroll compressor change the forces acting on the orbiting scroll, and these forces affect the dynamic behavior of the compression mechanism parts. To achieve high efficiency, using a self-sealing mechanism as a tip seal mechanism is very effective. Tip seals, which are placed on top of the scroll wraps, accomplish thrust sealing. This study calculates the friction force between the tip seal and the side plate of a scroll compressor using the numerical model considered in the Reynolds equation. The calculated friction force is verified by an experiment using a pin-on-disk apparatus. A hydraulic servo valve that controls the pressure of the oil hydraulic cylinder applies the normal load for the test, and a DC servo motor controls the sliding velocity of the disk. The friction force and normal load are measured by the force sensors attached to the supporting parts. The results show that the theoretical and experimental results are similar and that the friction is influenced by the viscosity of the oil and the sliding velocity of the scroll.
Bikers can be subjected to accidents during their bicycling. Helmets are only good, if any, for their head protection. A wearable airbag can protect the human neck area if it is properly designed. This airbag system is composed of an inflater and an airbag. The inflater contains a pressurized gas cylinder and a piercing device. The airbag is an inflatable fabric surrounding the human neck. When a bicycle accident happens, a sensor captures the motion of the biker and a microcomputer sends a signal to open a valve in the inflator to supply the pressurized gas to the airbag. An important issue of this system is that the airbag should be quickly inflated to protect the human neck. This paper deals with the airbag inflation time simulation and some issues to design a wearable airbag system. Also, a prototype was tested to show its feasibility using a human dummy mounted on a running cart.

In recent years, gas engines fueled with LNG or synthetic gas have been attracting considerable attention for marine use owing to their potential to facilitate better fuel economy and to reduce emissions. It has been confirmed that gas engines using the Otto cycle, which involves premixed combustion, can satisfy Tier III regulations without the EGR or SCR system. The objective of this study is to acquire simulation technologies for predicting gas engine performances in industrial fields. Using the commercial software BOOST, the simulation is conducted on a gasoline engine rather than a marine engine due to the gasoline engine's easier accessibility. This study consists of two stages. In the first stage published previously, the optimal modeling techniques for representing the behavior of the gas in the intake and exhaust systems were determined. In the current study, we formulated a method to evaluate the combustion and heat transfer processes in the cylinder and to ultimately determine the major performance parameters, given that the analytical model derived from the previous stage has been applied. Through this study, we were able to determine a combustion and heat transfer model and a valve discharge coefficient that are less reliant on empirical data: we were also able to formulate a methodology through which relevant constants are decided. We confirmed that the values of transient cylinder pressure variation, indicated mean effective pressure, and air supply can be successfully predicted using our modeling techniques.
