  • This study examines whether engine fuel efficiency is improved by optimization of the exhaust valve timing in a state where the intake valve timing has been optimized in a small turbo gasoline engine that has intake cams and exhaust cams with fixed valve opening periods. When the exhaust valve is opened late, the expansion stroke is longer, and the efficiency can be improved. A 2-cylinder turbo gasoline engine with 0.8 liters of displacement and an MPI (Multi Point Injection) fuel system was used. The engine was operated at 1,500 and 3,000 rpm, and the load conditions included a partial load of 50 N·m and a high load of 70 N·m. Data was recorded as the exhaust valve timing was controlled, and this was used to calculate the efficiency of combustion using a heat release, the fuel conversion efficiency, and the pumping loss. Results and the hydrocarbon concentrations in the exhaust gas were compared for each condition. Experiment results confirmed that additional fuel efficiency improvements are possible through exhaust valve timing control at 1,500 rpm and 50 N·m. However, in other operating conditions, fuel efficiency improvements could not be obtained through exhaust valve timing control because cases where the pumping loss and fuel/air mixture slip increased when the exhaust valve timing changed and the fuel efficiency declined.

  • A new MR cylinder with built-in valves using MR fluid (MR valve) is proposed for fluid power control systems. The MR or Magneto-Rheololgical fluid is a newly developed functional fluid whose obvious viscosity is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. The MR cylinder is composed of cylinder with small clearance and piston with electromagnet. The differential pressure is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. It has the characteristics of simple, compact and reliable structure. The size of MR cylinder and piston has ${\varphi}$60mm${\times}$259mm and ${\varphi}$58mm${\times}$136.5mm in face size respectively and 0.8mm in gap length. Through experiments on the static characteristics, it is found that the differential pressure is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity under little influence of the flow rate, which corresponds to a pressure control valve. Effectiveness of the MR cylinder is demonstrated through the position control of one link MR manipulator.

  • A pneumatic system was proposed to evaluate displacement accuracy of the pneumatic actuator without external load and to analyze capability of integration of the proposed valve system. The proposed pneumatic system consisted of a combination of pneumatic valves, two proximity sensors, and a programmable logic controller(PLC). The position controller is based on the PLC controller connected with the proximity sensors. Displacement accuracy of the pneumatic cylinder stroke was tested by varying air pressures of the supply and discharge-side and strokes of the pneumatic cylinder. The displacement accuracy of the pneumatic cylinder stroke increased as the supply and discharge side of air pressure increased at the stroke length of 133mm. Also the displacement accuracy increased as the stroke length increased with a fixed supply and discharge side of air pressure of the pneumatic cylinder as 3.5 and $4.5kg/cm^2$, respectively. The most accurate displacement of the pneumatic cylinder(i.e., standard deviation of 0.01 mm) was obtained at the supply and discharge side of air pressure of 4.0 and $5.0kg/cm^2$, respectively, and strokes of 170 and 190 mm among arbitrarily selected supply and discharge side air pressures and strokes.

  • Combustion and fuel distribution characteristics of heavy duty engine with the liquid phase LPG injection(LPLI) were studied in a single cylinder engine, Swirl ratio were varied between 1.2, 2.3, and 3.4 following Ricardo swirl number(Rs) definition, Rs=2.3 showed the best results with lower cycle-by-cycle variation and shorter burning duration in the lean region while strong swirl(Rs=3.4) made these worse for combustion enhancement. Excessive swirl resulted in reverse effects due to high heat transfer and initial flame kernel quenching. Fuel injection timings were categorized with open valve injection(OVI) and closed valve injection(CVI). Open valve injection showed shorter combustion duration and extended lean limit. The formation of rich mixture in the spark plug vicinity was achieved by open valve injection. With higher swirl strength(Rs=3.4) and open valve injection, the cloud of fuel followed the flow direction and the radial air/fuel mixing was limited by strong swirl flow. It was expected that axial stratification was maintained with open-valve injection if the radial component of the swirling motion was stronger than the axial components. The axial fuel stratification and concentration were sensitive to fuel injection timing in case of Rs=3.4 while those were relatively independent of the injection timing in case of Rs=2.3.

  • The effects of intake port eccentricity and a partition between the two intake ports on the incylinder swirl characteristics in a 4 valve diesel engine having the two intake ports, one is a helical intake port and the other is a tangential intake port, were investigated by using the impulse swirl meter(ISM) in a steady flow test rig. Mean flow coefficient ( $C_{f(mean)}$, swirl ratio ( $R_{s}$) and the mass flowrate through the two intake ports with and without intake port partition were measured. The results showed that the characteristics of in-cylinder swirl ratio formed by a 4-valve cylinder head were largely affected by valve eccentricity ratio ( $N_{y}$) and the existence of an intake port partition between the two intake ports. Mean flow coefficient ( $C_{f(mean)}$) increases and swirl ratio ( $R_{s}$) decreases in case of being the partition between the two intake ports. And also the mass flowrate through the tangential intake port is 19.0% and 7.7% more than that of the helical intake port in case of the two intake ports with and without partition respectively.ively.

  • Recently, the technologies related to the swash plate type oil hydraulic piston pump are requiring extreme technologies to overcome the limit of high efficiency in cope with high speed and pressure, and are devoted to compact the unit, to gain low noise level, and to adopt electronic technologies, and the question regarding to maximize the mechanical efficiency, that is, to minimize the torque loss by minimizing the leakage loss in the relative sliding region but these are in trade-off relation that tribological responding is very difficult. Cylinder block-valve pate in high speed relative sliding motion has the characteristics that should be extremely controlled for the optimization of these leakage loss and mechanical efficiency, and pressure resistance designing of them is important for high pressure performance. But, studies on the stress analysis of these parts have not been performed briskly, so in this paper the stress distribution and the region where the highest displacement appears are described through the static stress analysis using CATIA V5. Through the future studies on these theme, it has the purpose of finding the suitable materials for the other parts as well as cylinder block and valve plate, in cope with high pressure operation through the stress analysis with the most similar conditions for the practical operation.

  • In an oil hydraulic piston pump, the cylinder block and valve plate in high speed relative sliding motion have the characteristics which should be extremely controlled for the optimization of leakage and friction losses, and pressure-resistance design of them is very important for high pressure performance. But the studies on the stress analysis of those parts have not been performed briskly. Therefore, in this paper, the stress and displacement distributions of the cylinder block and valve plate in the oil hydraulic piston pump with a swash plate type are discussed through the static stress analysis using CATIA V5. The stress and displacement of the cylinder block are more influenced by the axial pressure than by the radial pressure, and are larger by approximately 66% and 30%, respectively. The results show that a review of the material and shape of the valve plate is required.

  • FCV is installed with a automatic valve attached in an high pressure cylinder to control the hydrogen flow. The supply of hydrogen from the cylinder into the fuel cell stack is controlled via the on/off operation of a solenoid attached to the automatic valve. The solenoid needs to provide the necessary attraction force even at any saturation temperature caused by drive of the vehicle. In this study, the simplified prediction equations for the saturation temperature are suggested. The finite element analysis was performed by steady state technique, according to the boundary condition in order to predict the saturation temperature and attraction force. Finally, the saturation temperature was validated through comparison between the analysis results and measurement results. From the results, the measured saturation temperature $5.9^{\circ}C$ lower with respect to the analysis results. And the error of attraction force ranged from 1.0 to 2.1 N at testing conditions.
