  • The relationship between fatigue crack growth behavior and cyclic crack tip opening displacement is studied. An elastic-plastic finite element analysis (FEA) is performed to examine the growth behavior of fatigue crack, where the contact elements are used in the mesh of the crack tip area. We investigate the relationship between the reversed plastic zone size and the changes of the cyclic crack tip opening displacement along the crack growth. We investigate the effect of the element size when predict fatigue crack opening behavior using the cyclic crack tip opening displacement obtained from FEA. The cyclic crack tip opening displacement is related to fatigue crack opening behavior.

  • Recrystallization technique was applied to analyze plastic strain at the notch tip of coarse grain HAZ in mild steel (SB 41) and high strength steel (SA 588). The notch tip of specimen was deformed by three point bending. Accumulated displacement (Crack Opening Displacement ${delta}t$) by the monotonic and cyclic loading under room temperature and hot strain embrittlement temperature ($250^{\circ}C$) was 0~1.0mm. Recrystallization heat treatment conditions were $650^{circ}C{ imes}3hr$ for SB 41 and $700^{circ}C{ imes}3hr$ for SA 588. The experimental results obtained were as follows ; 1) Distribution of the effective plastic strain at plastic zone was appeared by the function of crack opening displacement, and plastic zone or the effective plastic strain increased with crack opening displacement. 2) Plastic strain at notch tip of HAZ due to accumulated hot strain calculated as follows. .epsilon. over bar $_{p}$ = .epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ (x/ $R_{x}$ ) $^{m}$ (m=0.25) 3) Work hardending ratio of notch tip for hot strain was linearly increased with .epsilon. over bar $_{max}$ and dependent upon the material types.s.

  • An elastic-plastic finite element analysis of fatigue crack closure is performed for plane strain conditions. The stabilization behavior of crack opening level and the effect of mesh size on the crack opening stress are investigated. In order to obtain a stabilized crack opening level for plane strain conditions, the crack must be advanced through approximately four times the initial monotonic plastic zone. The crack opening load tends to increase with the decrease of mesh size. The mesh size nearly equal to the theoretical plane strain cyclic plastic zone size may provide reasonable numerical results comparable with experimental crack opening data. The crack opening behavior is influenced by the crack growth increment and discontinuous opening behavior is observed. A procedure to predict the most appropriate mesh size for different stress ratio is suggested. Crack opening loads predicted by the FE analysis based on the procedure suggested resulted in good agreement with experimental ones within the error of 5 %. Effect of the distance behind the crack tip on the crack opening load determined by the ASTM compliance offset method based on the load-displacement relation and by the rotational offset method based on the load-differential displacement relation is investigated. Optimal gage location and method to determine the crack opening load is suggested.

  • Fatigue crack initiation and propagation behavior under cyclic biaxial loading has been investigated using thin-walled tubular specimen with a hole. Two types of biaxial loading system, i.e. cyclic tensile loading with super-imposed static torsional load and cyclic torsional loading with superimposed static tensile load, with various values of the biaxial loading ratio, $\tau$ s/ $\sigma$ max (or $\tau$ max/ $\sigma$s) were employed. Fatigue tests show that fatigue crack near the hole initiates and propagates at 900 and 450 direction to the longitudinal direction of the specimen under cyclic tensile and torsion loading with static biaxial stress, respectively, and the static biaxial stress doesn't have any great influence on fatigue crack initiation and growth direction. Stress analysis near the hole of the specimen shows that the crack around the hole initiates along the plane of maximum tangential stress range. Fatigue crack growth rates were evaluated as functions of equivalent stress intensity factor range, strain energy density factor range and crack tip opening displacement vector, respectively. It is shown that the biaxial mode fatigue crack growth rates can be relatively consistently predicted with these cyclic parameters.

  • Hot straining embrittlement is one of the most important factors which cause the brittle fracture initiation even in the service temperature in the case of mild steel and high tensile steel. Therefore it is necessary to analyze thoroughly the hot straining embrittlement occurred in weld HAZ of the structural steels. The behaviors of plastic deformation and fracture toughness at the notch tip of the hot strained weld HAZ in structural steels (SB 41 KS, SA 588-Grade A ASTM) have been studied by the recrystallization technique and crack opening displacement (COD) test method. The obtained results are summarized as follows; 1. The plastic zone is formed at the notch tip of weld HAZ owing to nomotonic and cyclic hot stran, and the maximum plastic strain increases with the accumulated hot straining amounts. 2. The distribution of the effective strain at the plastic deformed zone in HAZ can be determined as follows; (.epsilon. over bar $_{p}$ )$_{\chi}$=.epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ ( $R_{/chi}$/.chi.)$^{m}$ where, .epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ : (SB 41; .epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ = 0.2, SA 588; .epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ = 0.1) 3. The embrittlement of weld HAZ in SB 41 and SA 588 is influenced by hot strain, and the degree of embrittlement becomes deeper with hot straining amounts. 4. The embrittlement of weld HAZ of SB 41 is not influenced by the hot straining amounts until .epsilon. over bar $_{max}$ = 0.36, $R_{\chi}$ = 0.065mm, however the embrittlement of structure in SA 588 is considerably influenced even by a small quantity of the hot straining amounts.s.
