  • The shape of surface micro-crack is very irregular due to nonhomogeneous microstructure but is very important in respect to qualitative estimation of fatigue life. Fractal geomety can quantify the shape of surface mciro-crack. Fractal dimension is measured for surface micro-cracks with coast line and box counting method and estimates cycle ration in Al 2024-T3. The average fractal dimension $D_{favg}$ of surface micro-cracks has 3-parameter weibull distribution and location parameter is nearly constant but shape parameter decreases as cycle ration increases. The fractal dimension by coast line method is measured for individual surface micro-crack but the fractal dimension by box countin method is measured for all the surface micro-cracks under sampling area. Therefore, This paper shows fractal dimension $D_{fb}$ can predict cycle ratio $N/N_f$ more convenient than fractal dimension $D_{favg}$.

  • It is important to evaluate fatigue damage of in-service material in respect to assure safety and remaining fatigue life in structure and mechanical components under cyclic load . Fatigue damage is represented by mathematical modelling with crack growth rate da/dN and cycle ration N/Nf and is detected by X-ray diffraction and ultrasonic wave method etc. But this is estimated generally by single parameter but influenced by many test conditions The characteristics of it indicates fatigue damage has complex fracture mechanism. Therefore, in this study we propose that back-propagation neural networks on the basis of ration of X-ray half-value breath B/Bo, fractal dimension Df and fracture mechanical parameters can construct artificial intelligent networks estimating crack growth rate da/dN and cycle ratio N/Nf without regard to stress amplitude Δ $\sigma$.

  • In-cylinde flow and mixture formation are key contributors to both idle stability and combustion stability at part load condition in SI engine. The real time measurements of air-fuel ration and in- cylinder residual gas fraction are particularly important to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms for combustion and emissions especially during cold start and throttle transient condition. This paper reports the cycle resolved measurements of residual gas fraction and equivalence ration near speak plug with value timing change and their effects on combustion characteristics at part load. The results showed that the effect of intake value opening on the residual gas fraction was smaller than that of exhaust valve closing because of the decreases of exhaust gas reverse flow from exhaust port. The variation of equivalence ratio near spark plug increased with the increase of value overlap and it closely related with heat release rate and combustion stability

  • Relations of each factor affected by emissions and the prediction of performance have been analyzed numerically by cycle simulation in the Spark Ignition Engine. Through theoretical analysis and experiments, the results are obtained as below. The calculated results and the experimental ones are almost highly agreeable on cycle simulation model, exhaust gas analysis and efficiency for processes in cylinder. Therefore this model is proved appropriate and can be useful for optimum design of Spark Ignition Engines on parametric studies. It is reaffirmed that the Wiebe's function is suitable for predicting Combustion Ration in Spark Ignition Engines. On parametric studies, it is found that optimum conditions whose density of emissions are lower and efficiency is maximum within propriety value are crankangle ATDC $15^\circ-20^\circ$, 2400 rpm. • With respect to stochastic delays at linked signals the solid quantitative information has not been available as yet. On the basis of field data the values of "I" (variance-mean ration of flow) were related with the rate of flow. The stochastic delays with specific "I" values were obtained from the distribution of overflow queue, which were calculated by the use of Markov chains. This examination of the results led to the derivation of a simple method for calculating stochastic dclays through the introduction of "I" into Miller's model. The good agreement was shown between the model and the field. The relationships between the cycle lengths and delays were examinated in a large number of conditions with regard to degree of saturation. signal split and link length. Within the practical range of cycle length uniform delays were dominant and no critical point was found in terms of minimum, delay. In highly saturated conditions however the weight of stochastic delay is noticeable.

  • Acoustic Emission was monitored during tensile test and loading-holding-unloa-ding cycle test for two types (notched and unnotched) of CFRP specimens. AE activities showed that the fiber breakage during tensile tests depended upon the specimen geometry. We obtained new AE parameter such as the ration (damage ratio= AE events during unloading test / AE events during loading test) and the felicity ratio from which we investigated dynamic fracture process of CFRP specimens. The damage ratio of AE events was shown to be a good indicator to distinguish the generated fracture mechanism, such as fiber breakage and delamination. Also, ultrasonic testing results after loading-holding-unloading cycle test were good agreement with AE test results to detect defects or fiber breakage.

  • Forty-four Javanese thin-tail ewes were used to study the effect of superovulation prior to mating and of ration quality on lamb birth weight at parturition. Twenty-two ewes weaning at least one lamb were used to measure lamb preweaning growth. Prior to mating, the experimental ewes were injected twice with prostaglandin, with an 11 d interval between injections to synchronize the estrous cycle. At the last prostaglandin injection, 24 ewes were also injected with 700 IU of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) to stimulate superovulation and the remainder were injected with saline as control. During pregnancy and lactation, the experimental ewes were fed either on a low (12% CP and 65% TDN) or a high (15% CP and 75% TDN) quality ration. During lactation, the milk was collected twice a day and was refed to the lambs by bottle feeding immediately after collection. Superovulation or ration quality as a main factor did not significantly affect lamb birth weight. Litter size significantly affected lamb birth weight (p<0.05), and there was an interaction of superovulation and litter size. Nonsuperovulated ewes giving birth to multiple lambs had significantly lower average lamb birth weight (1.34 kg) as compared to those giving birth to a single lamb (1.97 kg) (p<0.05). However, superovulated ewes giving birth to multiple lambs had no significant difference in average lamb birth weight (1.68 kg) as compared to those giving birth to a single lamb (1.91 kg) (p>0.05). Superovulation of ewes prior to mating resulted in a significant improvement in lamb birth weight in the multiple litter size, without significant effect on average preweaning daily gain (p=0.07). Superovulation had a promising use in improving animal production through improvement of prenatal growth during pregnancy and milk production during lactation.

  • Two experiments were conducted to determine whether leptin is a metabolic signal for gonadotropin secretion in ewes. In the first experiment, twenty-eight cyclic Chal ewes were assigned randomly to an energy restricted, no leptin group (ERNL) (60% of maintenance; n = 14) and an energy normal, no leptin group (ENNL) (100% of maintenance; n = 14) for 71 days (6 estrous cycles). Estrus was synchronized with seven consecutive injections of $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ Biweekly, body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) were determined and blood samples were collected to measure plasma leptin concentration. Blood samples were also taken to determine plasma progesterone concentration twice weekly. After each PG injection from the second injection to the end of experiment, four ewes were selected and blood samples were collected at 20 minutes and at hourly intervals for 3 h to detect plasma LH and FSH concentration. In the second experiment, after the ceasing of the estrous cycle caused by energy restriction, six acyclic ewes were selected and randomly allotted to two groups (n = 3) and received the following treatment for four days. Ewes in an energy restricted, leptin group (ERL) were fed with a ration which provided 60% of maintenance energy requirements and intravenously injected with $4{\mu}g$ leptin/kg BW daily. Ewes in an energy excess, no leptin group (EENL) were fed with a ration that provided 180% (120%+60%) of maintenance energy requirements and intravenously injected with 1 ml saline daily. In both groups, blood samples were collected at 20 minutes and at hourly intervals for 3 h before feeding on d 0 and d 5, and for 3 h before and after injections as above on d 2 and d 4 to detect plasma LH and FSH concentration. In the first experiment, BW and BCS from the $2^{nd}$ estrous cycle, and leptin from the $3^{rd}$ estrous cycle to the end of the experiment significantly (p<0.05) decreased. In ERNL ewes, mean plasma concentrations of FSH significantly (p<0.01) decreased from the $4^{th}$ estrous cycle to d 71 and LH pulsatile secretion was suppressed on d 71, so that, mean plasma concentrations of LH (p<0.05), LH pulse frequency (p<0.01) and LH pulse amplitude (p<0.05) significantly decreased. In the second experiment, injection of leptin significantly increased mean circulating concentrations of LH (p<0.05), LH pulse frequency (p<0.01), LH pulse amplitude (p<0.05) and mean circulating concentrations of FSH (p<0.01) and leptin (p<0.01). High energy intake significantly (p<0.05) stimulated pulsatile secretion of LH and leptin secretion (p<0.01), but non-significantly increased plasma FSH concentration. The results of this study indicate that leptin is a metabolic signal for the GnRH-LH/FSH axis in feed-restricted fat-tailed ewes.

  • Studies were conducted to investigate the relationship between hormone leveles and nutritional levels for improving performance of Cheju native cattle. In June 1984 a trial was initiated using 8 Cheju native calves after weaning, fed at two su, pp.ementary feeding levels (NRC 100% and 70%). The body weight, breedng performence, change in progesterone level during pregnancy and estrus cycle were evaluated. Mean body weight at 6 months of age was 155kg when fed 100% NRC ration but it was only 137kg when heifers received the 70% NRC ration. At 10, 15 and 20 months of age the body weight was 66, 160 and 115kg, respectively, showing that heifers fed the standard ration gained weight rapidly (P<0.01). Average size of the lefe ovary in the standard group was 2.1${\times}$1.6cm and right ovary was 2.6${\times}$1.8cm. However in the restricted feeding group the ovaries were found to be smaller. Diameter of graffian follicles showed a similar tendency to ovarian size in the two groups. The first oestrus in the standard feeding group a, pp.ared at 14.6 months when body weight was 265kg. Age at first calving was on average 28.9 months at a body weight of 436kg. On the other hand when heifers were fed the restricted ration the first oestrus a, pp.ared at 23.0 months at a body weight of 250kg. Average age at first calving was 38.9 months which was 10 months later than the average in the standard feeding group (P<0.01). In standard feeding group the progesterone level was 2.0ng/ml at two weeks after pregnancy and gradully increased up to 4 weeks and peaked at 18 weeks. This peak (6.4-6.5ng/ml) was maintained up to 24 weeks when progesterone level decreased until it reached 2.1ng/ml at the end of pregnancy. In the restricted group progesterone level up to 16 weeks followed a similar pattern to the standard group but there was a tendency in the restricted group to have lower progesterone levels(P<0.01). The standard and srstricted groups showed similar patterns of progesterone concentration during the oestrus cylce. There were no statistically significant differences in progesterone levels between standard and restricted groups but there was variation between induvidual animals.

  • As the Sewer Pipe is transformed by the expansion of life cycle as a result of the technology development, flexible pipe is developed by the transformed environmental conditions. To change pipe design, three phases(compaction ration - inner deflection ratio - ring stiffness) should be considered in design conditions. The input data of pipe design were provided by compaction-inner deflection ratio-ring stiffness. M oreover, The guidelines of sewerage pipes should be considered by flexible pipes design criteria.
