  • One of the alternative runoff management measures is on-site runoff mitigation, such as rainwater retention tank and infiltration facilities especially the latter that is possible to manage simultaneously runoff quality and quantity as a perspective of water-cycle. This study was conducted to develop a particle separator, inclined-pipe settling system, that could improve particle removal efficiency of road runoff as a pre-treatment device of stormwater infiltration. Solid particles larger than $100{\mu}m$ are separated by simple sedimentation; however, the significant amount of pollutants with a diameter less than $100{\mu}m$ remain in suspension. Without any treatment in that case of the runoff into infiltrate, groundwater would be deteriorated and also infiltration rate would be decreased by clogging. Therefore, we suggest optimal design parameters (inclined angle, pipe length, and surface loading rate) of inclined-pipe settling system which can be designed to effectively remove particles diameter smaller then $70{\mu}m$. Thus, the results showed TSS removal efficiency more than 80% with a particle diameter between $20{\mu}m$ and $70{\mu}m$, 100% above particle diameter $70{\mu}m$ for the inflow rate $0.018 m^3/m^2{\cdot}hr$ with pipe inclined at angle $15^{\circ}$.

  • Since existing hysteretic models for R/C members focused on presenting the degrading stiffness using empirical equations based on experiments, they cannot accurately predict the energy dissipation capacity during cyclic loading. Recently, design equations which can evaluate the energy dissipation capacity of R/C members were developed. Based on those equations, in the present study, an energy-based hysteretic model for flexure-dominated R/C members was developed. The proposed model was devised to dissipate the same energy as the actual one dissipated during a complete load cycle. The proposed model represents the hysteretic behaviors of R/C members accompanied by stiffness degradation and pinching using primary and cyclic curves and six unloading/reloading rules. The proposed model was verified by comparisons with various experimental results. The energy-based hysteretic model can be used to develop computer programs for static and dynamic analysis/design because it is simple and easily applicable to numerical analysis.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of amount of cantilever in intra-crown according to implant fixture position on mechanical strength of internal conical joint type implant. Materials and Methods : Internal conical joint type implant fixture, abutment screw, abutment was connected and gold alloy prostheses were fabricated and cemented on abutment. For fatigue fracture test, the specimens were loaded to the 350 N, 2,000,000 cycle on 3, 4, 5, and 6 mm off-center of gold alloy prostheses. The fracture pattern of implant component was observed. Results : No fatigue fracture found on 3 and 4 mm group. But initial crack pattern found on 3 specimens of 4 mm group. Fatigue fracture found on all specimens of 5 mm group. But complete fracture was not observed. One specimen of 6 mm group fracture completely. Implant fixture fracture wax not observed. Conclusion : The mechanical failure of implant prostheses increased with the loading area farther from center of implant fixture. To reduce mechanical problem of internal joint type implant, surgical and prosthetic consideration is needed.

  • In 2017, multimodal transportation tests for evaluating road, sea, and rail transport were performed by research institutes in the US, Spain, and the Republic of Korea. In this study, acceleration and strain data determined through road and sea tests were analyzed. It was investigated whether the load generated for each transport mode was amplified or attenuated according to the load transfer path. From the results, it was confirmed that the load transfer characteristics differed according to the transportation mode and loading path. The effects of strain determined through each test on the structural integrity of the spent nuclear fuel were also investigated. It was found that the magnitude of the measured strain had a negligible effect on the structural integrity of the spent nuclear fuel, considering its fatigue strength. The results for the acceleration and strain data analyses obtained in this study will be useful for scheduled domestic transportation tests under normal transport conditions.

  • Walking is not only an essential component of the human mobility, but also is a good exercise. Inability to walk freely can reduce an individual's quality of life and independence substantially. Being a relatively low impact activity, walking is particularly good for the elderly and research has shown that regular walking in the elderly reduces the chance of fall-related injuries and mental diseases as well. In spite of the documented benefits of regular walking, it is still difficult to walk without the aid of assistive devices for the frail elderly who have lower extremity problems. Assistive walking devices(AWD), such as crutches, canes, hiking-poles, T-Poles and walkers, are often prescribed to the elderly to make their walking be safe and efficient. Many researchers have demonstrated the effects of AWDs such as reducing lower extremity loading, improved dynamic/gait stability, yet, no study has been done for gait pattern when the elderly gait with AWDs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine whether T-Poles, one of the AWDs, change the elderly gait pattern. Eight community-dwelling female elderly participated in this study. Laboratory kinematics during walking with T-Poles(PW) and with out T-Poles(NPW) was assessed. PW showed significant increase in step width, stride length, gait velocity and decrease in swing time. No significances were found in lower body joint angles but meaningful trend and pattern were found. Maybe the reason was due to the participants. Our participants were healthy enough so that the effect of T-Poles was minimum. PW also showed typical gait phases which are no single support phase during a gait cycle. It indicates that walking with T-Poles may guarantee safe and confident walking to the frail elderly.

  • A modified method for the analysis of short fatigue crack growth has been presented, and calculations based upon the modified method are compared with experimental results for S45C carbon steel. It is also shown that the modified method is in good agreement with experimental data. The proposed equation for the fatigue crack growth rates includes a material constant which relates the threshold level to the endurance limit, a correction for elastic-plastic behaviour and a means for dealing with the effects of crack closure. In this study one of the modifications is to substitute the Forman' s elastic expression of the stress intensity factor range into the geometrical factor The other is a consideration of the bending effect which is developed from the moment caused by the eccentric cross sectional geometry as the crack grows. Thus, this method is useful for residual life prediction of the mechanical structures as well as the welding structures.

  • The granulation equipment of concentrated wastes is manufactured for the polymer solidification of concentrated wastes. It uses liquid sodium silicate as a granulating agent for the granulating of dried powder containing boric acid. The granulating agent is sprayed in the form of droplet and mean size of dried granules is $2{\sim}4mm$. The new technology which has been used for the polymer solidification of spent resin in U.S. and certified by Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is successfully applied to concentrated wastes. This uses in-situ solidification process within drum without mechanical mixing. Maximum loading of waste can be achieved without increasing of waste volume. Polymer waste forms were evaluated with several test such as fire test, compressive strength test, leaching test, immersion test, irradiation test, and thermal cycling test according to standard test procedures.

  • Fatigue fracture of reinforced concrete structures are characterized by considerably larger strains and microcracking as compared to fracture of R.C. structures under static loading. The strain of stirrup is increased suddenly by the occuring of inclined crack and the average strain ${\epsilon}_{\omega}$ of all stirrups in a structure at maximum load increase approximately in proportion to log N. The structures critical in longitudinal reinforcement seemed to have an endurance limit of 60~70 percent of static ultimate strengths for 1,000,000 cycles. In this test, the average fatigue strength at 1,000,000 cycles for all structures tested was approximately 65 percent of the static ultimate strength.

  • Fatigue tests by axial loading (R=0.1) were carried out to investigate fatigue crack growth properties of small surface cracks in mild steel at room temperature, 250.deg. C and 400.deg. C, by using flat specimens with a small artificial pit. All the data of the fatigue crack growth rate obtained in the present tests are determined as a function of the stress intensity factor range, so that the applicability of liner fracture mechanics to the fatigue crack growth of surface cracks at elevated temperatures is investigated and discussed in comparison with the data of type 304 stainless steel at room temperature and elevated temperature. The obtained results are as follows: 1) Relations of both surface fatigue crack length and its depth to cycle ratio fall within a narrow scatter band in spite of different stress levels. 2) The .DELTA. .sigma. .root. .pi. a-da/dN relation of surface fatigue crack growth at room temperature is independent of the stress level and can be plotted as a straight line at log-log diagram, but the relation at 400.deg. C depends partly on the stress level. 3) Relations of the fatigue crack growth into depth d(2b)/dN and is stress intensity factor range .DELTA. $K_{I}$, accounted for the aspect ratio variation, fall within a narrow scatter band for wide range of the applied stress levels. And .DELTA. $K_{I}$E-d(2b)/dN relations of mild steel at different stress level coincide relatively well with the data of type 304 stainless steel. 4) The value of aspect ratio obtained by a beach mark method and a temper coloring method approaches about 0.9 in common with crack growth and it is independent of stress level and temperatures. 5) The equi-crack length curve is parallel to S-N$_{f}$ curve at elevated temperatures.s.s.s.

  • A series of constant creep and repeated creep tests are performed to investigate the behavior of visco-elasto-plastic materials of chemical grouted sands. In the result of constant creep test, the material exhibits three types of shear strain : elastic, plastic, viscoelastic. The elastic, plastic and viscoelastic strains are linear, i.e., the strains are proportional to the stresses for loading. Good agreement is found between the predicted viscoelastic and test results by the power law and the generalized model. In the repeated creep test, the instantaneous recoverable strain is time-independent and the magnitude of accumulated plastic strain increases with number of cycles. Also it is seen that the accumulated plastic strains are approximately proportional to stress. There are no significant differences between test results predicted values for first cycle, and the differences increase relatively insignificantly with number of cycles.
