As jet lag of modern travel continues to spread, there has been an exponential growth in popular explanations of jet lag and recommendations for curing it. Some of this attention are misdirected, and many of those suggested solutions are misinformed. The author reviewed the basic science of jet lag and its practical outcome. The jet lag symptoms stemed from several factors, including high-altitude flying, lag effect, and sleep loss before departure and on the aircraft, especially during night flight. Jet lag has three major components; including external de synchronization, internal desynchronization, and sleep loss. Although external de synchronization is the major culprit, it is not at all uncommon for travelers to experience difficulty falling asleep or remaining asleep because of gastrointestinal distress, uncooperative bladders, or nagging headaches. Such unwanted intrusions most likely to reflect the general influence of internal desynchronization. From the free-running subjects, the data has revealed that sleep tendency, sleepiness, the spontaneous duration of sleep, and REM sleep propensity, each varied markedly with the endogenous circadian phase of the temperature cycle, despite the facts that the average period of the sleep-wake cycle is different from that of the temperature cycle under these conditions. However, whereas the first ocurrence of slow wave sleep is usually associated with a fall in temperature, the amount of SWS is determined primarily by the length of prior wakefulness and not by circadian phase. Another factor to be considered for flight in either direction is the amount of prior sleep loss or time awake. An increase in sleep loss or time awake would be expected to reduce initial sleep latency and enhance the amount of SWS. By combining what we now know about the circadian characteristics of sleep and homeostatic process, many of the diverse findings about sleep after transmeridian flight can be explained. The severity of jet lag is directly related to two major variables that determine the reaction of the circadian system to any transmeridian flight, eg., the direction of flight, and the number of time zones crossed. Remaining factor is individual differences in resynchmization. After a long flight, the circadian timing system and homeostatic process can combine with each other to produce a considerable reduction in well-being. The author suggested that by being exposed to local zeit-gebers and by being awake sufficient to get sleep until the night, sleep improves rapidly with resynchronization following time zone change.

Objectives: Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) has become an assisted reproductive technique for couples carrying genetic conditions that may affect their offspring. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an autosomal dominant disorder of connective tissue characterized by bone fragility and low bone mass. At least 95% of cases are caused by dominant mutations in the COL1A1 or COL1A2. In this study, we report on our experience clinical outcomes with 5 PGD cycles for OI in two couples. Methods: Before clinical PGD, we assessed the amplification rate and allele drop-out (ADO) rate of alkaline lysis and nested PCR protocol using heterozygous patient's single lymphocytes in the pre-clinical diagnostic tests for OI. We performed 5 cycles of PGD for OI by nested PCR for the causative mutation loci, COL1A1 c.2452G>A and c.3226G>A, in case 1 and case 2, respectively. The PCR products were analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with HaeIII restriction enzyme in the case 1 and direct DNA sequencing. Results: We confirmed the causative mutation loci, COL1A1 c.2452G>A in case 1 and c.3226G>A in case 2. In the pre-clinical tests, the amplification rate was 94.2% and ADO rate was 22.5% in case 1, while 98.1% and 1.9% in case 2, respectively. In case 1, a total of 34 embryos were analyzed and 31 embryos (91.2%) were successfully diagnosed in 3 PGD cycles. Eight out of 19 embryos diagnosed as unaffected embryos were transferred in all 3 cycles, and in the third cycle, pregnancy was achieved and a healthy baby was delivered without any complications in July, 2005. In case 2, all 19 embryos (100.0%) were successfully diagnosed and 4 out of 11 unaffected embryos were transferred in 2 cycles. Pregnancy was achieved in the second cycle and the healthy baby was delivered in March, 2008. The causative locus was confirmed as a normal by amniocentesis and postnatal diagnosis. Conclusions: To our knowledge, these two cases are the first successful PGD for OI in Korea. Our experience provides a further demonstration that PGD is a reliable and effective clinical techniques and a useful option for many couples with a high risk of transmitting a genetic disease.
Gonadal development and maturation mechanism were studied on the freshwater marsh clam Corbicula papyracea (Heude), which is the endangered species in Korea. The specimens were collected in the rearing ponds and waterway of NFRDI in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do from January to December 2004, and then investigated by condition factor, relative growth, gonadal development phases and gonad histological characters based on 30-50 individuals every month. Comparing with the freshwater marsh clam, C. papyracea is small, light olive brown shell and violet interior. The hermaphrodite individuals of C. papyracea take an internal fertilization and fertilized eggs are stored in the foster-sack in the gills, then the hatched juveniles are released outside after an ovoviviparous process. The average water temperature of inhabit area was in range of $1.8-27.0^{\circ}C$ and usually took great effects on the gonad maturation of C. papyracea. The condition factor ranged from 0.14 to 0.21 throughout the year, which was the lowest during winter season (December-February), and gradually increased to the highest value of 0.21 in May. The ratio of meat weight to total weight was 25.9-38.7%, indicating the similar trend with condition factor. The highest values of condition factor and the ratio of meat weight appeared 1-2 months later than gonadosomatic index reached the peak value, it was probably because that the ovoviviparous eggs would spend a long period before hatching from the foster-sack in the gills. To synthesize the characters of meat weight, condition factor and gonad development by histological study, reproductive cycle of C. papyracea could be divided into five successive stages: multiplicative stage (December to February), growing stage (February to May), mature stage (June to August), spawning stage (August to November), recovery stage (November to December). The smallest shell length of matured C. papyracea was 12.6 mm, and individuals, larger than 16 mm, was formed the nursery in the gills.
Sex-sorting of sperm is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) used by the livestock industry for the mass production of animals of a desired sex. The standard method for sorting sperm is the detection of DNA content differences between X and Y chromosome-bearing sperm by flow cytometry. However, this method has variable efficiency and therefore requires verification by a second method. We have developed a sex determination method based on quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) of the porcine amelogenin (AMEL) gene. The AMEL gene is present on both the X and the Y chromosome, but the length and sequence of its noncoding regions differ between the X and Y chromosomes. By measuring the threshold cycle (Ct) of qPCR, we were able to calculate the relative frequency of X chromosome. Two sets of AMEL primers were used in these studies. One set (AME) targeted AMEL gene sequences present in both X and Y chromosome, but produced PCR products of different lengths for each chromosome. The other set (AXR) bound to AMEL gene sequences present on the X chromosome but absent esholthe Y-chromosome. Relative product levels were calculated by normalizing the AXR fluorescence to the AME fluorescence. The AMEL method accurately predicted the sex ratios of boar sperm, demonstrating that it has potential value as a sex determination method.
In this study, the distribution of Cantao ocellatus in Korea occurred at Jindo, Tongyoung, Gwangju and Taean including Jejudo in 2012 and was coincidentally in accordance with the distribution of Mallotus japonicus as a host plant. The adult emerges in M. japonicus occur from late June to early July and can be observed until the end of October. The investigation of the female and male was measured, developmental characteristics, host plant and oviposition preference under the conditions of temperature $25^{\circ}C({\pm}2)$, humidity 65%(${\pm}2$), day length 16L:8D, by indoor breeding. For females and males respectively, average body lengths were 26.20 mm and 23.88 mm, body widths 11.35 mm and 10.57 mm, head widths 3.84 mm and 3.64 mm, probosics lengths 7.90 mm and 7.27 mm, antennal lengths 9.87 mm and 9.69 mm, anterior leg lengths 12.50 mm and 12.27 mm, intermediate leg lengths 14.61 mm and 13.12 mm, posterior leg lengths 16.90 mm and 16.53 mm, and fresh weights 0.46 g and 0.31 g. It was seen that two kinds of C. ocellatus had prickles at the end of the pronotum which had developed in the fifth instars. The female is distinguished from the male by the reproductive organ and the spotted pattern on the abdominal segment. The preference of drinks was fruit, leafstalk, midrib, and branch in Mallotus japonicus (Thunb.) Muell. Arg., Mallotus japonicus 'Variegatus', Ricinus communis L., Lonicera japonicus var. repens (Siebold) Rehder, Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck and Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Makino.

In this paper, computational evaluation method for fatigue crack growth rate(FCGR) based on material viscoplastic-damage model is proposed. Viscoplastic-damage model expressing material constitutive behavior of 7% nickel steel is introduced and is implemented into commercial finite element analysis(FEA) code, ABAQUS, as a user defined material subroutine(UMAT) for application in the FEA environments. Verification of developed UMAT and material parameters of material model are carried out by uniaxial tensile test simulations of 7% nickel steel. Moreover, jump-in-cycles procedure and rearrangement of critical damage are employed and also implemented to the ABAQUS UMAT for fatigue damage analysis. Typical FCGR test results such as relationship between crack length and number of cycles and relationship between da/dN and ${\Delta}K$ could be obtained from FCGR test simulation using developed UMAT and these results are compared with experimental results in order to verify of proposed computational method.

Biological Characteristic of Obolodiplosis robiniae and insecticidal activity of some insecticides against larvae of O. robiniae were investigated. Egg was in oval shape, and its color was light orange and became red when close to hatch. Length of the major axis and the minor axis of egg was 0.4 mm and 0.1 mm, respectively. Larval color was milky and size was 2.6 mm. Pupa was deep brown and its size was about 3.2 mm. Wing and abdomen of adult was black and reddish, respectively. Size of female adult was about 3.3 mm, and larger than male adult. Number of eggs in the ovary was $192.3{\pm}50.7$. First emergence was from late April to late May, and second from late May to late June. Third emergence was from late June to late July. Newly emerged adult escaped from soil, and second and third emerged adult escaped directly from gall of Robinia pseudoacacia leaf. Egg parasitoid was identified as Platygaster robiniae and parasite rate was 51.6%. Among test insecticides, imidacloprid 10% WP and thiacoprid 10% FL showed very strong insecticidal activity against larvae of O. robiniae at 48h later after treatment.

The electrical behavior and flexibility of the screen printed Ag circuits were investigated with infrared radiation sintering times and sintering temperatures. Electrical resistivity and radio frequency characteristics were evaluated by using the 4 point probe measurement and the network analyzer by using cascade's probe system, respectively. Electrical resistivity and radio frequency characteristics means that the direct current resistance and signal transmission properties of the printed Ag circuit. Flexibility of the screen printed Ag circuit was evaluated by measuring of electrical behavior during IPC sliding test. Failure mode of the Ag printed circuits was observed by using field emission scanning electron microscope and optical microscope. Electrical resistivity of the Ag circuits screen printed on Pl substrate was rapidly decreased with increasing sintering temperature and durations. The lowest electrical resistivity of Ag printed circuit was up to $3.8{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ at $250^{\circ}C$ for 45 min. The crack length arisen within the printed Ag circuit after $10{\times}10^4$ sliding numbers was 10 times longer than that of after $2.5{\times}10^4$ sliding numbers. Measured insertion loss and calculated insertion loss were in good agreements each other. Insertion loss of the printed Ag circuit was increased with increasing the number of sliding cycle.

This study was initiated to develop an algorithm for traffic condition adaptive optimal traffic signal control for isolated intersections based on the vehicle trajectory data. The algorithm determines the optimal cycle length, phase lengths, phase sequences using the data collected under V2X communication environment every second. In addition, the algorithm utilizes a traditional feature of the actuated signal control, gap-out, using traditional detector systems to consider the mixture of normal vehicles and vehicles equipped with the V2X communication function. The performance of the algorithm was compared with that of the fixed signal timing plan which was optimized with Synchro under a microscopic traffic simulation-based test bed. As a result, the overall performance, including average delay, average stop delay, the number of stops, and average speed, are improved apparently. In addition, the amount of improvement get bigger as the traffic volume in the intersection as well as the number of vehicles equipped with the V2X communication function increase.
The life-cycle of the aphid-parasite, Aphidius gifuensis, took 11.9 days at $25^{\circ}C$ and 12.1 days at $30^{\circ}C$. The female appearance rate of A. gifuensis was the best at $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ compared to the other temperatures. Optimum rearing temperature of Aphidius gifuensis was $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ Optimum temperatures for A. gifuensis emergence were $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ with 99.1% and 98.2%, respectively. However the emergence rate of Aphidius gifuensis was 58.8% at $10^{\circ}C$. There was a positive correlation between A. gifuensis adult activity and temperature, but there was a negative correlation between developmental period of Myzus persicae nymph and temperature. Among the pests occurring in pepper greenhouse, dominant species was M. persicae and its density was 6~1,024 per plant. The damaged fruit rate by Helicoverpa assulta was 3.3~53.3%. The number of aphid and mummy in the A. gifuensis released plot were 173.5 and 10 in June, 1.8 and 17 in July, 2000, respectively. The numbers of Aphidius gifuensis were 7.5 and 0.4 in May, 27.1 and 2.1 in June, 2001, respectively. The suppressive effects on M. persicae in A. gifuensis released plot was better than the control plot, but there was no significant difference compared to the pesticide-sprayed plot. The first leaf length and the stem width in the A. gifuensis released plot, the control plot, and the pesticide-sprayed plot were not significantly different, but the A. gifuensis released plot showed the highest yield among the plots.
