  • This paper investigates the relationship between cutting conditions and Acoustic Emission(AE) signals; AEavg, AErms, AEmode, as the base working to monitor the tool wear with in-process. For this purpose, cutting tests were conducted on a CNC lathe with comprehensive cutting conditions.. It is known that AEavg and AErms are proportionaly increased as the increasing of cutting velocity and depth of cut respectively. It is also known that AEmode among three kinds of AE signals may be applied for in-process monitoring to make the self diagnosis system because of its stability to the variation of cutting condition.

  • It is known that Si3N4 ceramic insert has less hardness than Al2O3 ceramic insert. But Si3N4 ceramic insert has not only high toughness and strength but also low thermal expansion coefficient, which makes it has longer tool life under thermal stress condition. In this study, commercial Si3N4 ceramic insert and home-made SiC-Si3N4 ceramic insert which has different sintering time and chemical composition is tested under various cutting conditions. The experimental result is compared in terms of tool life and cutting force. Generally, As the cutting speed and the feed rate increased, the cutting force and the flank wear increased too. The performance of SiC-Si3N4 ceramic insert shows the possibility to be a new ceramic tool.

  • In order to improve the cutting ability of face mill, a model for optimal cutter shape was developed to minimize resultant cutting force by combing cutting force model and optimal technique. Wear test and surface roughness test for optimized and conventional cutter were performed. The new optimized cutter shows longer tool life of 2.29 times than conventional cutter in light cutting condition and 2.52 times in heavy cutting condition. The surface roughness of workpiece by optimized cutter is improved in heavy cutting condition, but deteriorated in light cutting condition in comparison with conventional cutter. The surface profiles of workpiece were analyzed by Fourier transformation. The distribution of cut lay left on workpiece by optimized cutter is more regular than that by the conventional cutter.

  • This is an experimental investigation of the temperature generated in a cutting tool during the machining of stainless steel. The temperature results from the wear of the cutting tool are considered in order to investigate the relation between cause and effect of these factors. This possibility has been tested using a thermocouple technique to record temperature vs. time curves for a variety of cutting conditions. This is done by employing a thermocouple inserted on the tool tip near the major cutting edge. Temperature distributions are calculated using finite element method and compared to the contour maps measured by an optical system. It suggests that the temperature gradients and the tool performance will be dependent on certain facotrs in tool geometry when cutting this material.

  • The chip controls are investigated experimentally for the purpose of estimating cutting ability of hardened steel. In this experiment, hardened STD11 steel ($HR_c$ 60) is turned with carbide tool M20 under various cutting conditions and with several tool shapes. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) Cutting conditions of cutting speed 45m/min. feed 0.09-0.13 rev. depth of cut 0.4-0.6 are recommended for the chip excluding. 2) In case that the feed becomes larger and a lead angle of cutting tool becomes smaller, the chip excluding becomes easier. 3) It is confirmed that frank wear and crator wear on the cutting tool appear severely from about 10 min. after cutting start and chip excluding get worse.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference in cutting characteristics of cermet, carbide and coated carbide tools in the similar application range via turning test of various conditions. The cermet and carbide tools in the range of ISO P10 grade were developed using optimum compositions with a view to obtaining a high toughness and hardness by PM process. First mechanical properties were characterized on these tools. Experimental results of wear behaviour and resistance to fracturing were presented and discussed in the turning of gray cast iron and alloy steels by cermet, carbide and coated carbide tools. The coated carbide tool shows similar cutting performance compared to the cermet, while the cermet has better combination of wear resistance and toughness of high speed (V=500m/min) cutting in comparison with carbide and coated carbide tools, and also shows a potentiality for cast iron cutting. Fe adhesive behaviour on the tools and surface roughness of workpieces were explained by chemical affinity between tools and workpieces.

  • Development of five axis tool grinding machine and CAD/CAM systems increase tool design flexibility. In this research, investigated are cutting characteristics of ball-end mill with different helix angle. Special WC ball-end mills with $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ helix angles are designed and used in various cutting tests. Machining performance according to helix angle variation is evaluated from cutting forces, surface roughness, tool wear, produced chip shape, and vibration characteristics. The ball-end mill with $10^{\circ}$ helix angle shows the best cutting performance due to appropriate chip load distribution and smooth chip flow. This research can be used for cutting edge geometry optimization and novel design of ball-end mill.

  • In the part industry, pipe has required high accuracy in surface roughness and size. Especially, when producing the high frequency welding pipe, cutting process is very important as the finishing process that remove the hot welding bead. The objective of this paper is to investigate the hot machining high frequency welded pipe by simulation and experimental tests. To test the cutting process as hot machining, all cutting environment is reproduced in turning with heating system, and the test is accomplished by comparing with room temperature machining and hot machining in consideration of cutting force, tool wear and cutting temperature.

  • A new indirect tool wear sensing technique is proposed using time series analysis. The acceleration measured on the tool post in the vertical direction during turning is sampled with uniform interval, and fitted following the ARMA modeling procedures. Various signal characteristics are observed in respect with the progress of flank wear. From those observations it is believed that; *The variance of the signal is approximately proportional to the increase of flank wear. *The absolute power of a dynamic mode decreases in the beginning of cutting until the maximum flank wear increases up to 0.4-0.5mm, and then increases. *The other characteristics are not so much related to the tool wear as the signal variance and the absolute power of a dynamic mode. Hence, the absolute power of a dynamic mode seems to be a good factor for the indication of tool-change time regardless of tool material or cutting conditions.

  • In this paper, three different types of commercially tools-P20, NC123K and ceramic-have been used to working austempered ductile iron(ADI). In the austempered condition the materials are hard, strong and difficult to machine. Thus, we selected a optimum tool material among three different types of used tools in machining of austempered ductile iron. It was used acoustic emission(AE) to know cutting characteristic for selected tool and flank wear land of the ceramic too. The obtained results are as follows; (1) The ceramic tool among three different types of tools is the best in machining austempered ductile iron. (2) In case of ceramic tool, the amplitude level of AE signal(AErms) is mainly affected bycutting speed in cutting speed in cutting condition and it is proportioned to cutting speed. (3) There have the relationship of direct proportion between the amplitude level of AE signal and flank wear land of the tool. (4) If it find the value of AErms at each cutting speed, the in-process detection to ceramic tool's wear is possible
