Cutting management has been identified as a critical factor in the alfalfa production systems because it has a significant impact on maximizing yield and maintaining the forage quality. The objective of this experiment was to determine the proper cutting height according to harvesting time for optimizing nutrient yield and forage nutritive quality of alfalfa grown in alpine regions of Korea. Alfalfa was sown at a seeding rate of 30 kg/ha in August 2018 and harvested at four cuttings in 2019 (3 May, 2 July, 11 September, and 13 October). Cutting heights were adjusted at 5, 15, and 25 cm above the soil surface. Alfalfa plant was tallest at the third cutting (109 cm), which was on average 35 cm taller than the first or second cutting. Relative feed value (RFV) remained unaffected by cutting height at the first harvest, but increased consistently in subsequent harvests as cutting height increased. Alfalfa collected at the first and fourth cuttings had the highest RFV (mean 152), which was on average 8 and 67 units higher than the second and third harvests, respectively. At each harvest, in vitro dry matter digestibility was highest in alfalfa cut at a 25-cm height. Dry matter (DM) production at each cutting height was highest in the first cutting, accounting for on average 36-37% of total annual DM production, and lowest in the fourth harvest, accounting for about 11-13% of the total DM yield. The total dry matter production (in four harvests) was 4,218 kg/ha higher when alfalfa was subjected to a cutting height of 5 cm rather than 25 cm. Cutting height had no effect on total crude protein yield, but from the first to fourth cutting, the protein yield followed a decreasing trend. Finally, there were visible declines in forage nutritive quality when alfalfa was cut at a shorter height. However, the magnitude of difference in total forage yield may outweigh the slight decline in forage quality when alfalfa is cut at a lower height. The findings of this study could help the alfalfa growers make better harvest management decisions.

In recent years, aluminum processing has been increasing in the aerospace, vehicle, airplane industries etc., because aluminum has abundant resources and has a high specific strength. Aluminum alloys have a high coefficient of thermal expansion therefore, it is necessary to consider the temperature problem in the cutting process. The objective of this research is to investigate the machinability of a hardened aluminum alloy Al7075-T6 by using cryogenic heat treatment. The machining test is conducted by comparing the cutting force and surface roughness, corresponding to various cutting conditions of depth of cut, cutting speed, and feed rate, with those of Al7075-T0.

Machinability in metal cutting processes depends on cutting input conditions such as cutting velocity, feed rate, depth of cut, types of work material and tool shape factors. In this study, to assess chip breaking characteristics of a turning process, an equivalent oblique cutting system to this has been established. And the equivalent effective rake angle was determined using side rake angle, back rake angle and side cutting edge angle of the tool. A non-dimensional parameter, Chip breaking index(CB), was used to assess Chip breaking characteristics of chip in conjunction with the equivalent effective rake angle. In case of positive rake angles of the equivalent effective rake, the back rake angle has little effect on the chip breaking characteristics however, in case of negative ones, the side rake angle has some effect on Chip breaking characteristics.

This paper presents the construction of an ultra-precision machining system and machining experiments using the developed system. The system is composed of air bearing system, granite bed, air pad, and linear feeding mechanism. The cutting conditions have great effect on the surface quality in ultra-precision machining. the ultra-precision machining is mainly processed by several ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ depth of cut and feed rate. For this, tools with sharper cutting edge and less tool wear are needed. To satisfy these requirement, diamond is generally used as a tool material for ultra-precision machining. In order to evaluate the cutting characteristics of the PCD and MCD tools on the aluminum alloy, the machining experiments performed using the developed system.

Hard turning on modern lathes becomes a realistic replacement for many grinding applications. Because CBN tools are expensive, excessive tool wear can eliminate economic advantages of hard turning. This paper describes a study of investigating the cutting force and the characteristics of tool wear in hard turning of hardened steels, AISI 52100. Cutting forces generated using CBN tools have been evaluated. The radial thrust cutting force was the largest among three cutting force components. It increased dramatically as a result of progressive tool wear. On the other hand, the result shows significantly different wear characteristics between high CBN and low CBN. Backpropagation neural network was used for the estimation of tool wear. The networks were achieved the reliability of 96.3% even when the spindle speed and feed rate are changed.
The machining process of ceramics can be characterized by cracking and brittle fracture. In the machining of ceramics, edge chipping and crack propagation are the principal reasons to cause surface integrity deterioration. Such phenomenon can cause not only poor dimensional and geometric accuracy, but also possible failure of the ceramic parts. Thus, traditional ceramics are very difficult-to-cut materials. Generally, ceramics are machined using conventional method such as grinding and polishing. However these processes are generally costly and have low MRR(material removal rate). To overcome such problems, in this paper, h-BN powder, which gives good cutting property, is added for the fabrication of machinable ceramics by volume of 10 and 15%. The purpose of this study is an analysis of endmill's rake angle for appropriate tools design and manufacturing for the machinable ceramics. In this study, Experimental works are executed to measure cutting force, surface roughness, tool fracture, on different axial rake angle of endmills. Cutting parameters, namely, feed, cutting speed and depth of cut are used to accomplish purpose of this paper. Required experiments are performed, and the results are investigated.
This work was tamed out to apply a laser welding technique in joining between a Zn coated low carbon steel plate(SECC) and a free cutting carbon steel shaft(SUM24L) with or without W coating. Experiments were carried out and analysed by applying the FD(factorial design)method to obtain the optimum Laser welding condition. Optical microscopy, SEM, TEM and XRD analyses were performed in order to observe the microstructures in the fusion zone and the HAZ. Mechanical properties of the welded specimens were examined by microhardness test, tensile test and twist test. There was no flawed Zn in the fusion zone by EDS analysis. This means that during the welding process, Zn gas could be eliminated by appropriate shielding gas flow rate and butt welding gap. Ni coating itself did not influence on the tensile strength and hardness. However, twist bending strength and the weld depth of the Ni-coated free cutting carbon steel were lower as compared with those of the uncoated free cutting carbon steel. It was attributed to a lower absorbance of laser beam to the shin Ni surface. According to the results of the factorial design tests, the twist bending strength of welded specimens was primarily affected by pulse width, laser power, frequency and speed.

An experimental investigation was executed to determine the capacity degradation due to fin conduction and non-uniform refrigerant distribution in a multi-path evaporator with cross-counter flow. The finned-tube evaporator, which had a three-path and three-depth-row, was tested by controlling inlet quality, exit pressure, and exit superheat for each refrigerant path. The capacity reduction due to superheat unbalance between each path was as much as $25\%$ for non-cutting evaporator, even when the overall evaporator superheat was kept at a target value of $5.6^{\circ}C$. It indicates that the internal heat transfer within the evaporator assembly causes the partial capacity drop. The capacity of cutting-evaporator with respect to non-cutting evaporator was enhanced according to the increment of air flow rate when superheat or superheat unbalance increased.
Adiabatic shear bands have been observed in the serrated chip during high strain rate metal cutting process of medium carbon steel and titanium alloy The recent microscopic observations have shown that dynamic recrystallization occurs in the narrow adiabatic shear bands. However the conventional flow stress models such as the Zerilli-Armstrong model and the Johnson-Cook model, in general, do not predict the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in the shear bands and the thermal softening effects accompanied by DRX. In the present study, a strain hardening and thermal softening model is proposed to predict the adiabatic shear localized chip formation. The finite element analysis (FEA) with this proposed flow stress model shows that the temperature of the shear band during cutting process rises above 0.5Τ$_{m}$. The simulation shows that temperature rises to initiate dynamic recrystallization, dynamic recrystallization lowers the flow stress, and that adiabatic shear localized band and the serrated chip are formed. FEA is also used to predict and compare chip formations of two flow stress models in orthogonal metal cutting with AISI 1045. The predictions of the FEA agreed well with the experimental measurements.s.

Although rock excavation is necessary for the effective utilization of urban space, most conventional rock excavation methods, including the blasting method, cause high noise and vibration. Meanwhile, if a high pressure waterjet system is applied to excavate underground spaces in urban areas, the public grievance can be reduced by low noise and vibration. In this study, an abrasive waterjet system is designed and developed to study the influence of various performance parameters such as jet pressure, nozzle traverse speed, stand-off distance, or abrasive feed rate on waterjet excavation performance in laboratory. Using the developed waterjet system, rock drilling characteristics are identified by measuring drilling depths as a function of the jet exposure time. The drilling depth linearly increases with increasing the jet exposure time(under 60sec). Rock cutting characteristics are also obtained with various jet pressures(1600~3200kg/$cm^2$) and nozzle traverse speeds(1.9~14.1mm/s): The cutting depth is nonlinearly related to the jet pressure and traverse speed. Indeed, the cutting depth increases with an increase in the jet pressure and a decrease in the nozzle traverse speed. This trend can be explained by energy transferring/loss mechanism.
