  • The global demand for energy has been increasing since past decades. Various technologies have been working to find a suitable alternative for the generation of sustainable energy. Photovoltaic technologies for solar energy conversion represent one of the significant routes for the green and renewable energy production. Despite of remarkable improvement in solar cell technologies, the generation of power is still suffering with lower energy conversion efficiency, high production cost, etc. The major problem in improving the PV efficiency is spectral mismatch between the incident solar spectrum and bandgap of a semiconductor material used in solar cell. Luminescent materials such as rare-earth doped phosphor materials having the quantum efficiency higher than unity can be helpful for photovoltaic applications. Quantum cutting phosphors are the most suitable candidates for the generation of two or more low-energy photons for the absorption of every incident high-energy photons. The phosphors which are capable of converting UV photon to visible and near-IR (NIR) photon are studied primarily for photovoltaic applications. In this review, we will survey various near IR quantum cutting phosphors with respective to their synthesis method, energy transfer mechanism, nature of activator, sensitizer and dopant materials incorporation and energy conversion efficiency considering their applications in photovoltaics.

  • The authors have developed two devices which cuts the spend fuel rod to an optimal size and extracts fuel pellet from the pieces of cut fuel rods. These devices are so important to reduce radioactive wastes that some advanced countries developed their own methods and devices. The authors have benchmarked from these methods and devices. For spent fuel rod cutting, the tube cutting method has been chosen. some mechanical properties of the fuel tube and pellet has been carefully considered for an optimal cutting size. For fuel pellet extraction, a mechanically extracting method has been adopted. The existing chemical method have turned out to be inappropriate because it produced large amount of radioactive wastes, in spite of its high fuel recovery characteristics. The developed method has an advantage that it can be applied to other fuel rods that have different shapes and sizes. The two devices are set up and operated in the hot cell where people can not go in, so that the devices have been designed to be controlled remotely and modulated for easy maintenance. And the performance of the devices has been tested by using simulated fuel rod. From the experimental results, the devices are supposed to be useful for reducing radioactive wastes.

  • Most of the silicon cutting methods using the multi-wire with the slurry injection have been used for wafers of the crystalline solar cell. But the productivity of slurry injection cutting type falls due to low cutting speeds. Also, the direct contact with the metal wire and silicon block increases the concentration of metallic impurities in the wafer's surface. In addition, the abrasive silicon carbide (SiC) generates pollutants. And production costs are rising because it does not re-use the worn wire. On the other hand, the productivity of the cutting method using the diamond coated wire is about 2 times faster than the slurry injection cutting type. Also, the continuous cutting using the used wire of low wear is possible. And this is a big advantage for reduced production costs. Therefore, the cutting method of the diamond coated wire is more efficient than the slurry injection cutting technique. In this study, each cutting type is analyzed using the surface characteristics of the solar wafer and will describe the effects of the manufacturing process of the solar cell. Finally, we will suggest improvement methods of the solar cell process for using the diamond cutting type wafer.

  • Laser cutting tests were conducted to investigate the laser cutting characteristics of solid woods such as 25mm-thick white oak(Quercus acutissima) and maple(Acer mono), and wood-based panels such as 15mm-thick medium density fiberboard and particleboard. Test variables were laser power, cutting speed, grain direction, and moisture content. Specific cutting energy was measured and the qualities of cut surface were estimated in constant laser power. Specific cutting energy of white oak was larger than that of maple, and specific cutting energy of medium density fiberboard was smaller than that of particleboard. For both white oak and maple, specific cutting energy of green wood was smaller than that of air-dried wood because weight loss of moisture evaporation in green wood was larger than that in air-dried wood. In laser-cut surface, wood cells were not deformed and damaged, but in circular saw-cut surface fibers were pushed out and cut, and wood cells were deformed severely. However, mechanical surface roughness of saw-cut surface was smoother than that of laser-cut surface because of the existence of undeformed cell cavity in laser-cut surface.

  • One of the exciting research areas of the X-ray microscope is the observation of a living cell. In order to study a living cell with high resolution the order of the several tens nm, we need to improve the efficiency of mirrors which are components of an X-ray microscope system. In this paper we present the mirror design and manufacture to give a high resolution and reflectivity. We designed Wolter type I the condenser and objective mirror with the several tens of nm resolution. According to mirror design. we made the program using the visual basic. Using the new processing method as well as the ultra-precision diamond cutting, we directly processed the inside of an aluminum hulk in order to manufacture mirrors. From the experimental result, we think that the new processing method will improve a high reflectivity through the improved cutting tools and optimum cutting conditions.

  • The STD11 and KP4 are important steels and applied to the manufacturing of the die and mold. The purpose of this study is to investigate the machinability of tool steels of STD11(HRC60) and KP4(HRC32) when machining them by using ball end milling tools coated with TiAlN. Cutting forces by using a Kistler piezo-cell type tool dynamometer, surface roughness and tool wear by using tool microscope are used in the tests. The results from the cutting tests of KP4 specimens show that 85m/min. of cutting speed and 0.32mm/rev. of feed per revolution are optimum conditions for the higher productivity and 0.26mm/rev. with the same cutting speed are optimum conditions for better surface finishing. The results from machining STD11 workpiece at 30m/min. of cutting speed and 0.17m/rev. of feed per revolution show recommended for the higher productivity. The KP4 shows relatively smaller cutting forces than STD11 and STD11 shows the better surface finish than KP4.

  • In this study, the variations of cutter acting forces depending on cutting conditions were examined to obtain basic data for roadheader cutting head design. The linear cutting tests were performed in the condition of different attack angles, penetration depths, cutter spacings by using a slim conical pick for the light cutting condition. Cutter acting forces were measured by 3-directional load cell under different test conditions, and the analysis for cutting performance were carried out after calculating average values of the measured results. It is confirmed that the optimal cutting condition for the mortar specimen is the 50 degree attack angle, the cutter spacing of 12 mm, the cutting depth of 9 mm which are obtained from the analysis results. In addition, 50 degree attack angle is more effective than 45 degree attack angle to design optimal specifications of cutting head.

  • To develop a technique for mass-propagation of virus-free sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] plant using nutrient film technique (NFT), the growth characteristics of 4 cultivars as affected by nutrient solution composition and cutting size were investigated. 72 cells (35 mL/cell) plug trays filled with vermiculite and perlite (1:1, v/v) were used. Vine length, fresh and dry weights of virus-free plants were the greatest in the nutrient solution recommended by National Horticultural Research Station in Japan, followed by that recommended by National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in Korea, and Yamazaki's nutrient solution for lettuce. The growth of uppershoot cuttings was the best among 4 subsections of cutting. Vine length, and fresh and dry weights increased in the longer cutting treatments, and were better in 'Shinzami' and 'Yeonhwangmi' than those in 'Mannami' and 'Shincheonmi'. Vine diameter and length of the longest root were not significantly affected by the cutting size and cutting source. The growth characteristics of the single node cutting were not significantly different from those in 2-node cutting. The efficiency of rapid mass-propagation could be promoted with single node cuttings and uppershoot cuttings grown in NFT system.
