  • In excavating tunnels, shield tunneling machines having many cutters on their cutter planes are used. Not many observation data being available in the detection system, optimal observation policy is very important. From this viewpoint, we previously considered the optimal location of acoustic sensors on the cutter plane and also the optimal observation policy for the case where three receiving transducers were used, and showed that the optimal sensor location was given as arbitrary equally-spaced points on the cutter plane circle, and that the optimal rotating angles were also found to be arbitrary. In application, however, it is often difficult to locate sensors at arbitrary positions or to use three sensors from the viewpoints of machine structure and cost. This paper considers the optimal observation policy for detecting anomlous plane objects for the case where two receiving transducers are used and the case where three receiving transducers are located only on a diameter of the cutter plane.

  • Based on the relative velocity method and the inverse kinematics theory, this paper presents an automated system for designing and manufacturing of an open type cylindrical cam with a rotating follower(OCRF). In the first part, this paper defines the relative velocity method for OCRF and calculates the contact point by using the coordinate transformation technique. In the second part, it generates NC Code of a CNC machine center for inverse kinematics by using the cutter location and the cutter orientation of OCRF. Finally, the automated CADICAM program developed in the paper shows an example on the desip and manufacture process of OCRF.

  • Cutting forces in ball-end milling of slanted surfaces are calculated. The cutting area is determined from the Z-map of the surface geometry and current cutter location. The obtained cutting area is projected onto the cutter plane normal to the Z-axis and compared with cutting edge element location. Cutting force is calculated by integration of elemental cutting forces of engaged cutting edge elements. Experiments with various slanted angles were performed to verify the proposed cutting force estimation model. It is shown that the proposed method predicts cutting force effectively for any geometry including sculptured surfaces with cusp marks and surfaces with pockets and holes.

  • In this study, the procedure of interpolation surface modeling on bicubic spline patch equation and NC machining are presented. The procedure consists of three parts : patch modeling, cutter location data generation, post processing and NC milling machining. For generation of the cutter location data, tangent vectors and units normal vectors on the patch must be calculated. In order to investigate the properties of the interpolation surface created by bicubic spline patch, two kinds of end conditions, clamped end condition and relaxed end condition, were applied in this study. The shape of the patch depends on the magnitide of the tangent vectors and twist vectors at the corners of bicubic surface patch. the patch generated by relaxed end condition more approximated to the surface patch which was given.

  • This paper describes a procedure of generating economic cutter-location(CL) data for the machining of sculptured surfaces on a multi-axis NC milling machine. Measures of economy are the machining time (cutter move distance) and the length of NC tape (number of CL data points). The presented procedure minimizes both the number of CL data and the total distance of cutter moves, for a given cutter (spherical end-mill) size and parameteric cutting direction, while satisfying given tolerance requirements. The procedure has been implemented in FORTRAN for a smooth composite Bezier surface. The maximum allowable cutter size is calculated by the program so that a user can choose a cutter size. CL data can be generated in both parametric directions u and v. Experimental results show that there are significant differences between the parametric directions, and that cutter size should be as large as possible in order to minimize the cutting time and NC tape length.

  • Gouge-free tool-path generation is an important issue in mold & die machining and researches on cutter interference avoidance can be found in many articles. One of the various methods is construction of tool-offlet surface or cutter-location (CL) surface on which the cutter-center point (CL-point) locates. Provided that the CL surface is represented in a suitable form, cutter-interference avoidance can be performed without the burden of computing CL data for every cutter-contact (CC) point. In the paper, various methods of constructing a CL surface in the z-map form are presented, where z-map is a special form of discrete nonparametric representation in which the height values at grid points on the xy-plane are stored as a 2D array z[i,j].

  • It is well known that the five-axis machining has advantages of tool accessibility and machined surface quality when compared with conventional three-axis machining. Traditional researches on the five-axis tool-path generation have addressed interferences such as cutter gouging, collision, machine kinematics and optimization of a CL(cutter location) or a cutter position. In the paper it is presented that optimal CL data for a face-milling cutter moving on a tool-path are obtained by incorporating TSS(tool swept surface) model. The TSS model from current CL position to the next CL position is constructed based on machine kinematics as well as cutter geometry, with which the deviation from the design surface can be computed. Then the next CC(cutter-contact) point should be adjusted such that the deviation conforms to given machining tolerance value. The proposed algorithm was implemented and applied to a marine propeller machining, which proved effective from a quantitative point of view. In addition, the algorithm using the TSS can also be applied to avoid cutter convex interferences in general three-axis NC machining.

  • The disc cutter and cutterbit, which are the most important factors to increase the excavation efficiency of TBM, are key factors in the design and construction of the cutter head. The arrangement, spacing, number, size, and material of disc cutters suitable for the ground conditions determine the success or failure of TBM construction. The disc cutter, which is a representative consumable part in TBM construction, can cause enormous disruption to the construction cost as well as the construction cost unless accurate prediction of wear and replacement cycle is accompanied. Therefore, in this study, the method of calculating the replacement cycle of the disc cutter calculated at the time of design for the slurry shield TBM field, and the depth of wear and replacement location of the disc cutter that occurred during actual construction were compared by analyzing the field data. For a quantitative comparison, weathered soil/weathered rock, soft rock, and hard rock were classified according to the ground in the section showing constant excavation data, and the trajectory of circle was different depending on the location of the disc cutter, so it was compared and analyzed.

  • Tool interference is one of the most critical problems in sculptured surface machining. When machining cavities and concaves, the tool frequently overcuts the portions of the surface, which cause inaccuracy in machining. So tool interference-free paths must be generated for rough cutting more efficiently. In this paper a software using SSI(Surface/Surface intersection) algorithm is developed for eliminating tool interference which occurs in an offset surface in 3-dimensional free form surface modeling. this work consists of two stages : using the offset data, the intersection curves are rapidly checked by this algorithm at the first stage. CL(cutter location) data are obtained by deleting the loop section of intersected offset patches at the second stage. This algorithm can reduce the amount of memory required to store machining data and also easily check region which have the possibility of intersection. Also, This software is verified to be useful in machining a curved object on a DNC milling machine.
