  • A new rose cultivar, 'Green Beauty' was selected from the progenies of a cross between 'Qvarna' and 'Sky Line' by rose breeding team of the Gyeonggi-Do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in 1999. It was finally selected in 2005 after evaluation trials for five years (2001-2005). 'Green Beauty' was developed for a standard-type cut flower. 'Green Beauty' has good qualified flower of which color is fair orange-yellow and green. 'Green Beauty' produces $178stems/m^2$ in a year, and has 62 petals per flower. Vase life of the cultivar could be as long as 12 days. 'Green Beauty' has some good agricultural and marketing traits. Futhermore marketing-quality was good in some aspects. The cultivar was applied for a variety protection in 2006, and was released to commercial growers in 2007.

  • The bent peduncle phenomenon (BPP) is known as a kind of physiological disorders found in cut rose plants, which causes the reduction of cut flower yields. As yet unknown mechanisms, however, it has not been easy to find solutions for BPP. To address this challenge, this study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of floral morphology, growth, and endogenous phytohormone level of BPP shoots in cut rose plants (Rosa hybrida L. 'Beast'). Morphological observation confirmed the fact that BPP was accompanied by the early formation and being phyllody of a specific sepal among five sepals, which gave rise to peduncle bending in the upper part of the phyllody with fasciation. Year-round BPP frequency in 'Beast' cultivar was in the range of 5 to 20% with seasonal change, increasing rapidly with an average temperature rise in summer. Except bent peduncle, the BPP shoots appeared to grow normally in terms of speed and size of floral development in comparison with normal. However, carbohydrate distribution to the floral part in BPP shoots was significantly reduced. The level of endogenous IAA (3-Indoleacetic acid) within the floral part in BPP shoots was highly maintained during floral development, in contrast to normal shoots. $GA_3$ contents were not significantly different between normal and BPP shoots. This study indicates that BPP would be induced by a series of courses: abnormally early formation of a specific sepal relative to high temperature, being phyllody of the sepal with fasciation, and continuous supply of endogenous IAA by phyllody.

  • When it was a localized torrential downpour last year, a natural-slope fell down above a cut-slope. They were caused that stress was opened by cutting slope, ground water level rose quickly and a ground mass strength fell etc. So volume of ground mass increase because of that reasons, finally the disturbed ground was collapse. Therefore I suggest that safety of a natural-slope is a consideration, when a cut-slope is made by cutting ground.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial effect of freely available chlorine (FAC) on the vase life of cut rose 'Brut' (Rosa hybrida L.). Postharvest treatments to extend the vase life of cut roses were divided into holding solution treatment and pulsing solution treatment. In holding solution treatment, the cut roses were treated with the preservative solutions containing FAC (0, 10, 20, and $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) and sucrose (0 and 2%, w/v). In pulsing solution treatment, cut roses were dipped into the FAC solutions of 100, 200, and $400mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ for 10 seconds. The longest vase life of cut roses was observed in the holding solution with FAC $20mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ as 12 days, followed by pulsing with $400mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ as 11 days, which were four or five days longer than the control. In addition, relative fresh weight and water uptake were the highest in the holding solutions with FAC 20 and $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. The antimicrobial effect of FAC in vase solution was lasted for eight days after treatment, which was offset by sucrose addition. FAC contents in the FAC holding solution mixed with sucrose were exhausted by 88% two days after treatment, whereas only 15% of FAC was reduced in the holding solution without sucrose. This study indicated that FAC can be applied to extension of the postharvest life of cut roses by antimicrobial activity.

  • To obtain information for the proper fertilization management of cut-flower roses, the amount of macro and micro elements absorbed by cut-flower roses from soil for a year was investigated. Three cut-flower rose cultivars which are called 'Grandgara', 'Nobless', and 'Centina' were transplanted to a sandy loam soil, N-P-K standard fertilization was applied to the soil, and drip irrigation was done at the level of 10 kPa soil moisture tension. There was not significantly different in the harvest amount of cut-flower rose between 'Grandgara' and 'Nobless', but the harvest yield of 'Centina' was about 63% level when compared to that of 'Grandgara'. Considering seasonal changes in the content of nutrients in plant, parts, the uptake of untrients was higher in winter season than that in spring and summer seasons. Except for 'Centina', the nutrient amount removed from plant parts of 'Grandgara' and 'Nobless' increased with the sequence of floral part < stem < leaf, indicating that it is more dependent on biomass yield than on the content of nutrients in each plant part. The ratio of N/K amount absorbed by 'Nobless' and 'Centina' was 1.13 and 1.28. respectively, lower than 1.68 of 'Grandgara', showing that the requirement for K is greater in 'Nobless' and 'Centina' than in 'Grandgara'. The use efficiency of nutrients by cut-flower roses ranged from 39 to 64% in nitrogen, 5 to 9% in phosphorus, and 37 to 67% in potassium. It suggests that the requirement for P in cut-flower roses is very low.

  • During summer in Korea, the excessively high temperature causes growth retardation and quality reduction in cut roses grown in greenhouse. Mist treatments were conducted to reduce the temperature and avoid quality reduction of cut roses. The temperature change in the greenhouse, growth and quality of cut roses, and injuries caused by insects or fungi were investigated during mist treatment. Daily maximum temperature reduced as the number of mist treatment increased, resulting in $6^{\circ}C$ reduction by mist treatment for 10 seconds at 5 min interval. This temperature reduction occurred only when maximum temperature was over $40^{\circ}C$ in greenhouse, and not when it was less than $40^{\circ}C$ or rainy and/or cloudy day. Plant height and fresh weight of the cut roses were increased at the range of 10-20% by mist treatment. As frequency of mist treatment increased, however, malformed flowers increased and vase life of cut rose was largely shortened. The injuries by insects like as beet armyworm larvae and scale insect increased as well. In conclusion, it is recommended that mist treatment must be used when the daily maximum temperature in a green house is over $40^{\circ}C$ and forecasting for disease or insects should be conducted as well.

  • In this paper, the flame-retardant wall paper was successfully prepared with recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) short cut fiber with flame-retardant property and wood pulp using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as binder followed by treatment of non-halogen flame retardant. Physical properties such as formation index, tensile strength, elongation, and burst strength increased as defibrillation increased except tear strength. Bulk increased but formation index, tensile strength, elongation and burst strength decreased along with addition of PET short cut fiber. It was also found that tear strength rose significantly up to 30% of PET short cut fiber and then declined (fell) rapidly. As addition level of PVA increased tensile strength, elongation and burst strength increased, but tear strength decreased slightly. Addition of 20% of PET short cut fiber and 13% of PVA provided the flame-retardant wall paper with both improved flameproofing and physical properties.

  • A new gerbera variety "Red Line" was released by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2008. A cross was made between "Mirage" with orange and double and "Rose" with red and semi-double in 2005. After investigation of the characteristics for four years (from 2005 to 2008), it was selected specially for the use of cut flower. "Red Line" is a vigorous cultivar with red (RHS R44B), black center and semi-double. The average flower diameter is 12.7 cm, large flower. And inner ray floret and disc diameter are 8.10 cm and 2.80 cm, respectively. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of flowers and has adequate peduncle height. We believe that "Red Line" has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic gerbera cultivars and increasing farmers-income.

  • A new cultivar of Rosa hybrida 'Loving Heart' was developed by crossing Gyeongkyo R-6 and 'Noblesse' at Gumi Floricultural Experiment Station in 2002. Characteristics trials were conducted three times from 2004 to 2007. This cultivar showed dark pink flower color (RHS, Red-purple group 66-B) and standard type with good flower shape. The flower diameter is 10.3cm and the number of petals per flower is 55. Vase life of 'Loving Heart' could be as long as 12.3days. The yield of 'Loving Heart' was $127stems/m^2/year$. 'Loving Heart' has good quality of cut flower and strong vigor in plant growth. This cultivar has straight stems and is easy to culture because of a few prickles on the top of stem. This cultivar is appropriate for both soil and solution(hydroponics) cultures.
