Statement of problem. Adhesives in dentistry playa major role in the success of restorative treatments. In the treatment of all ceramic restoration it is needed to find the adequate bond strength between enamel and dentin. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate shear bond strength of resin cement bonded to extracted human uncut enamel, cut enamel, and dentin in vitro. Material and methods. Ten freshly extracted anterior teeth without any previous restorative treatments were chosen. The extracted teeth were embedded in PMMA cold acrylic in the shape of a cylinder, 25 mm in diameter by 25 mm in height. The bonding system used was as follow: Uni-Etch (32% phosphoric acid), One-Step adhesive, Duolink resin cement. The specimens were acid etched and rinsed with water. Two layers of One-Step adhesive were coated with a disposable brush on the uncut enamel. VIP curing light at $500mV/cm^2$ was used to cure the adhesive. For cut enamel shear bond test, the specimen used for uncut enamel was further reduced approximately $0.3{\sim}0.5mm$ using a laminate preparation diamond bur (0.3 mm in depth). The specimens were subsequently treated with 320-grit SiC paper followed by 600-grit SiC paper and cleaned with distilled water. The bonding procedure on the cut enamel was same as uncut enamel bonding procedure. For dentin bonding test, the specimen used for cut enamel was further reduced approximately $0.5mm{\sim}1.0mm$ using a laminate preparation diamond bur (0.5 mm in depth of diamond cutting). The amount of reduction was evaluated with the silicone mold. The specimens were subsequently treated with 320-grit SiC paper followed by 600-grit silicon carbon paper and cleaned in distilled water. The bonding procedure on the dentin was same as uncut enamel bonding procedure. All samples were mounted and secured on the Ultradent shear bond test sample holder, and Ultradent restricted shear bond testing device was used with Universal Instron machine until fracture. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was performed comparing the result at P<0.05. Multiple comparison (Tukey) was used to compare each groups. Result. The result showed that the mean value in shear bond strength of resin cement bonded to uncut enamel, cut enamel and dentin were 27.04 Mpa, 30.25 Mpa and 26.39 Mpa with respect. Conclusion. Within the limitation of this study, the mean value of the shear bond strength of cut enamel was higher than those of uncut enamel or dentin. However there existed no statistical differences between three different human dentition substrates due to increased adhesive characteristics.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the microshear bond strength (uSBS) to enamel prepared with different burs and to determine what type of bur were chosen when a self-etching primer adhesive was used. Materials and Methods: Enamel of forty-two human molars were used. They were divided into one of six groups (n = 7), Group 1, coarse (125 - 150 ${\mu}m$) diamond bur; Group 2, standard (106 - 125 ${\mu}m$) diamond bur; Group 3, fine (53 - 63 ${\mu}m$) diamond bur; Group 4, extrafine (20 - 30 ${\mu}m$) diamond bur; Group 5, plaincut carbide bur (no. 245); Group 6, cross-cut carbide bur (no. 557). Clearfil SE Bond and Clearfil AP-X (Kuraray Medical Inc.) was bonded to enamel surface. The bonded specimens were subjected to uSBS testing. Results: The uSBS of Group 4 was the highest among groups and it was significantly higher than that of Groups 1, 2, 3, and 6 (p < 0.05), but it was not significantly different from that of Group 5. Conclusions: Different burs used on enamel surface affected the microshear bond strengths of a self-etching primer adhesive to the enamel surface. In the case of Clearfil SE Bond, extrafine diamond and plain-cut carbide bur are recommended for bonding to enamel.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of the porcelain laminate specimens according to the surface roughness of the cut enamel of human anterior teeth. Flat enamel surfaces were prepared in 30 extracted human anterior teeth with diamond disc which were divided into two groups. Group 1 Coarse enamel surface group prepared with LVS-3 bur. Group 2 Fine enamel surface group prepared with superfine diamond bur. 30 teeth specimens of two group were stored in normal saline during 24 hours. 30 disk - type porcelain laminate specimens with diameter 4mm and thickness 1mm were made and sand - blasted on internal surface which were to cemented on enamel surface. Porcelain laminate specimens were cemented on enamel surface with Choice Veneer System (Bisco Dental, U.S.A) according to manufacture's instructions. All teeth specimens of two groups were manipulated with same method and stored In normal saline before testing. An Universal Testing machine (Model No.UTM-4206,Instron, U.S.A) was used to apply shear loads in the vertical directed, and the force required for separation was recorded with a cross head speed of 3mm/min and 500kg in full scale. The results were as follow ; 1. The mean shear bond strength of coarse surface group was 36.30kg and that of fine surface group was 44.39 kg, but there was no significant difference in breaking strength of two groups(p>0.05).
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of burs on microleakage of Class V resin restorations when a self-etching primer adhesive was used. Forty Class V cavities were prepared with four different cutting burs on extracted third molars, and divided into one of four equal groups (n = 10); Group 1-plain cut carbide bur (no. 245), Group 2-cross cut carbide bur (no. 557), Group 3-fine diamond bur (TF-21F), Group 4-standard diamond bur (EX-41). The occlusal and gingival margin of cavities was located in enamel and dentin, respectively. Cavities were treated with Clearfil SE Bond and restored with Clearfil AP-X. Specimens were thermocycled, immersed in a 2% methylene blue solution for 24 hours, and bisected longitudinally. They were observed leakages at enamel and dentinal margins. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon signed ranked test. The results of this study were as follows; 1. At enamel margin, microleakage of group 4 was statistically higher than those of group 1, 2 and 3 (p < 0.01). 2. At dentinal margin, microleakage of group 4 was statistically higher than group 3 (p < 0.01), but group 1 and 2 were not statistically different with group 3 and 4. 3. Enamel microleakage was statistically higher than dentinal microleakage in group 1, 2 and 3 (p < 0.05), but statistical difference between the microleakage of enamel and dentinal margin was not in Group 4. In conclusion, the use of coarse diamond bur showed high microleakage at both enamel and dentinal margin when Clearfil SE Bond was used in class V cavity.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of radiation on the formation of rat molar enamel at the developmental stage. The experimental animals were divided into five groups and were irradiated single dose of 396cGy ; 1 st group on 14th day of gestation, 2nd group on 19th day of gestation, 3rd group on 3 days after birth, 4th group on 8 days after birth, 5th group on 28 days after birth. The control and 1, 2, 3, and 4th experimental groups were sacrificed on 2, 4, and 6 weeks and the 5th groups were sacrificed on 1 day and 2 weeks after irradiation. Distal 1/2 and occlusal 1/3 enamel surface of lingual side of lingual cusp, and fractured surface of lingual side of lingual cusp in a longitudinal direction of the mandibular first molar were examined using scanning electron microscope. The following results were obtained. 1. The roughness of enamel surface and enamel hypoplasia were increased in a sequence of 4th, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd experimental group, and the enamel cracks were increased in the 1st and 2nd experimental group. 2. The pattern of enamel hypoplasia had a network form on the 1st and 2nd experimental group, and appeared a linear shape on the 3rd experimental group, and then the crator-like enamel defects were observed in all experimental groups (especially 1st and 2nd experimental group) except 5th. 3. Dentinoenamel junction showed the clear-cut and straight appearance except 5th experimental group. 4. There was no significant difference between 5th experimental and control group.
This study compared the microshear bond strength $({\mu}SBS)$ to end and side of enamel rod bonded by four adhesives including two total etch adhesives and two self-etch adhesives. Crown segments of extracted human molars were cut mesiodistally. The outer buccal or lingual surface was used as specimens cutting the ends of enamel rods, and inner slabs used as specimens cutting the sides of enamel rods. They were assigned to four groups by used adhesives: Group 1 (All-Bond 2), Group 2 (Single Bond), Group 3 (Tyrian SPE/One-Step Plus), Group 4 (Adper Prompt L-Pop). After each adhesive was applied to enamel surface, three composite cylinders were adhered to it of each specimen using Tygon tube. After storage in distilled water for 24 hours, the bonded specimens were subjected to ${\mu}SBS$ testing with a crosshead speed of 1 mm/minute. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The $({\mu}SBS)$ of Group 2 $(16.50\pm2.31 MPa)$ and Group 4 $(15.83\pm2.33 MPa)$ to the end of enamel prism was significantly higher than that of Group 1 $(11.93\pm2.25 MPa)$ and Group 3 $(11.97\pm2.05 MPa)$ (p<0.05). 2. The $({\mu}SBS)$ of Group 2 $(13.43\pm2.93 MPa)$ to the side of enamel prism was significantly higher than that of Group 1 $(8.64\pm1.53 MPa)$, Group 3 $(9.69\pm1.80 MPa)$, and Group 4 $(10.56 \pm1.75 MPa)$ (p<0.05), 3. The mean $({\mu}SBS)$ to the end of enamel rod was significantly higher than that to the side of enamel rod in all group (p<0.05).
To investigate the difference of Texture exhibited on interproximal enamel surface with each different stripping method and the susceptibility of proximal enamel to demineralization after stripping and the application of a topical fluoride go] and sealant, one hundred human premolars, which were Previously extracted for orthodontic reasons were evaluated by means of Scanning electron microscopy and laser fluorescence. The results were as follows : 1. No matter what the initial stripping instrument was the furrows that resulted from all the stripping methods were not completely removed by careful polishing. 2. Among the enamel surfaces that were treated with three different initial abrasive instruments, followed by the same polishing method (Sof-$Lex^{(r)}$ disks), the enamel surfaces that were treated with 700 crosscut carbide bur showed the smoothest surfaces. 3. The stripped teeth, no matter what the initial stripping instrument was, were less resistant to initial demineralization than untreated teeth. But no difference in caries susceptibility according to differently stripped methods was found (p<(0.001). 4. Teeth treated with APF-gel or sealant were mote resistant to demineralization than those treated without other treatment after stripping (p<0.001). 5. Comparing groups treated with APF-gel to groups treated with sealant, the former was more resistant to demineralization than the tatter (p<0.05). In conclusion, enamel surfaces that were stripped jnterproximally were less resistant to demineralization even though various attempts were made to produce smooth, self-cleaning enamel surfaces. Therefore, additional treatment-sealant or calcifying/ fluoridating solution To the stripped enamel surfaces is recommended.

Laser beam machining (LBM) is fast, contactless and able to machine various materials. So it is used to cut metal, drill holes, weld or pattern the imprinted surface. However, after LBM, there still leave burrs and recast layers around the machined area. In order to remove these unwanted parts, LBM process often uses electrochemical etching (ECE). But, the total thickness of workpiece is reduced because the etching process removes not only burrs and recast layers, but also the entire surface. In this paper, surface coating was performed using enamel after LBM on metal. The recast layer can be selectively removed without decreasing total thickness. Comparing with LBM process only, the surface quality of enamel coating process was better than that. And edge shape was also maintained after ECE.
Physical properties of composite resins such as strength, resistance to wear, discoloration, etc depend on the degree of conversion of the resin components. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion of the composite resins according to the thickness of tooth structure penetrated by light and applied light curing time. The coronal portions of extracted human teeth (one anterior tooth, three posterior tooth) was embedded by pink denture material. the mounted teeth were cut into three illumination sections (1mm thickness enamel section, 1mm thickness dentin section, 2mm thicknes dentin section) and one backing section with cutting wheel. Thin resin films were made by using 6kg pressure between slide glass during 5 minutes Thin resin film was light cured on coupled illumination section during 40sec, 80sec and 120sec. each illumination section was coupled as follows; no tooth structure(X), ename section(E), enamel section + 1mm dentin section(ED1), enamel section + 2mm dentin section(ED2), enamel section + 1mm dentin section + 2mm dentin section(EDD). To simulate the clinical situation more closely, thin resin films was cured against a backing section of tooth structure. The degree of conversion of carbon double bonds to single bonds in the resin films were examined by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer. The results were obtained as follows ; 1 As curing time was increased, conversion rate was increased and as tooth thickness which was penetrated by curing light was increased, conversion rate was decreased. 2. At all tooth thickness groups, conversion rate between 80sec and 120sec was not significantly increased(P>0.05). 3. At 40sec group and 80sec, conversion rate between no tooth structure(X) group and 1mm enamel section(E) group was not significantly decreased(P>0.05). 4. At 80sec group and 120sec, conversion rate between 1mm enamel section(E) group and 1mm enamel section + 1mm dentin section(ED1) group was not significantly decreased(P>0.05).

In one group that tested for the effects of grinding and etching on the deciduous teeth, S.E.M. examination on the ground or unground labial surface of deciduous maxillary central incisors were made after etching procedure with 40% phosphoric acid for 60 secs., 120 secs., 180 sees. each. In another group that tested for the degree of resin penetration to the ground and etched deciduous teeth, composite resin application was done to the ground deciduous maxillary central incisors that had been acid-etched for 30 secs., 60 secs., 90 sees., 120 sees., 180 secs. each. The tooth-resin specimens were cut at the middle 1/3 of the crown by 2mm thickness, and the adjacent tooth materials were demineralized by 10% hydrochloric acid, the author observed the tags of the resin replica with S.E.M.. Following results were obtained. 1. After 40% phosphoric acid etching, the unground deciduous enamel surface showed various types of etching pattern. 2. For the formation of regular micropores on deciduous enamel surface by acid etching with 40% phosphoric acid, the time over 120 secs. should be requested. 3. After 40% phosphoric acid etching, the ground deciduous enamel surface showed the same etching pattern that has been a preferential removal of prism peripheries despite different etching time. 4. On the ground group that etched over 60 secs. to 180 secs., the length of tags was $5{\mu}m$ to $8{\mu}m$, with a mean of $7{\mu}m$.
